How to Grow a YouTube Channel: A Practical Plan

Grow a YouTube channel by repeating one loop: make videos for a clearly defined viewer, package each upload so that viewer chooses to watch, keep them watching, then check YouTube Studio before changing anything. YouTube says its recommendations find videos for each viewer from their watching behaviour, likes, dislikes, subscriptions and feedback, rather than promoting videos to an audience. This plan for how to grow a YouTube channel cites YouTube’s own pages for every rule and leaves out the shortcuts its policies ban. Each task links to the guide that covers it step by step.

How to grow a YouTube channel: the plan in six stages

Work through six stages (set up, choose, add Shorts, package, convert, measure) and repeat the last four with every upload; together they are your YouTube strategy. For long-form videos, YouTube says it looks at whether viewers choose to watch a recommended video, then at average view duration and average percentage viewed, then at likes and post-watch surveys. Checked against YouTube Help: Search & discovery tips (Video)

  1. Set up the channel and unlock the features you’ll need.
  2. Choose one audience and a format you can repeat.
  3. Add Shorts so new viewers can find you.
  4. Package each video so the right viewer clicks and stays.
  5. Convert viewers into subscribers and regulars.
  6. Measure in YouTube Studio, then change one thing at a time.

Shorts are judged on similar terms: the share of viewers who chose to view, average view duration and average percentage viewed, then likes and survey results, personalised by each viewer’s history. Checked against YouTube Help: Search & discovery tips (Shorts) None of these signals should be bought: YouTube’s Terms of Service forbid paying or incentivising people to increase a video’s views or likes or a channel’s subscribers. What should you set up before your first upload?

A channel, the right owner and unlocked features. A Google Account lets you watch, like and subscribe, but uploading, commenting and making playlists need a YouTube channel. For a business name, or a channel more than one person will manage, YouTube’s route is a channel on a new Brand Account. Then verify a phone number to unlock intermediate features, including videos longer than 15 minutes and custom thumbnails.

Custom thumbnails are worth that step, because the thumbnail and title are what a viewer decides on; YouTube’s Thumbnail & title tips page has its own advice for both. Checked against YouTube Help: Thumbnail & title tips Advanced features (clickable links in long-form descriptions, chapters, pinned comments, A/B testing) also need enough channel history, or ID or video verification; YouTube says most active channels already have enough history. Tips for starting a YouTube channel, task by task

What should your channel make?

Videos for one audience, in a format you can repeat without repeating yourself. YouTube says its system “has no opinion about what type of video you make, and doesn’t favor any particular format”, so the choice is yours. The limit is sameness: YouTube’s monetization policies treat interchangeable or templated videos as unable to monetize, while a shared intro or a series with distinct episodes is fine.

Checked against YouTube Help: Search & discovery tips (Video).

Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube channel monetization policies.

YouTube renamed that policy from “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” on 15 July 2025; its examples include image slideshows or scrolling text with little narrative, and AI content made from generic templates without the creator’s own insight. Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube channel monetization policies (changelog, 15 Jul 2025) Reposting others’ content without significant original commentary, modification or value can remove monetization from the whole channel, even with the original creator’s permission. AI that meaningfully alters or generates realistic content also needs a Yes under “AI use” when you upload. Checked against YouTube Help: Disclosing use of GenAI content Checked against YouTube Help: Disclosing use of GenAI content

Write your YouTube content strategy down in one line (who it’s for, the format, what each episode adds) and test every idea against it. For ideas with demand behind them, YouTube Analytics has a Trends tab, which YouTube describes as what your audience and viewers across YouTube are searching for. Do YouTube Shorts help grow a channel?

They can bring in new viewers, and YouTube says they can’t drag your long-form videos down: “Shorts can help with audience discovery but can’t hurt your Video performance.” A square or vertical video of 3 minutes or less uploads as a Short. To keep a short video out of Shorts, YouTube’s answer is a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9.

Your long-form videos are a ready source of Shorts, and YouTube says “You won’t be penalized for using your content in a video clip or Short.” In YouTube Studio on a computer, the Clips and Shorts tool does the cutting (its AI suggestions work only in some countries and languages):

On a computer: Create a Short:

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Content > Videos.
  2. Click the existing video that you want to use.
  3. In the left-hand menu, select Clips and Shorts.
  4. Click Create clip or Short > choose Short.
  5. Select which part of your existing video you'd like to extract into a new Short (select text in the transcript and click "Confirm selection", enter timestamps in the timeline editor, or pick an AI-powered suggestion if available).
  6. Select Preview Short.
  7. Click Create Draft. Complete the standard upload dialog to publish.

How do you get found in search and recommendations?

Make each video easy to match and worth choosing. YouTube ranks search results on relevance, engagement and quality, and says it doesn’t accept payment for better organic placement, so describe each video in the words viewers search for. Recommendations follow viewers’ own behaviour instead, so the title and thumbnail must win the click and the video must keep it.

Checked against How YouTube Works: How YouTube search works.

YouTube’s own packaging tips: accurate, succinct titles with the most important words first and little ALL CAPS or emoji; thumbnails aimed at the viewer you’re targeting, with the rule of thirds, readable text and a simple design, and older ones kept under test. Checked against YouTube Help: Thumbnail & title tips Tags barely register: asked how important they are, YouTube answers “Not important”, as they mainly correct common misspellings. Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube performance FAQ & Troubleshooting

Then test. YouTube Studio’s A/B testing (once called Test & compare) tries up to 3 titles, 3 thumbnails or 3 title-and-thumbnail pairs on a long-form video, and picks a winner by watch time share, not click-through rate. It needs advanced features, works only in Studio on a computer and isn’t available for Shorts. On a computer: YouTube Studio:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select the video you want to test. Test a new video: From the upper right corner, click CREATE > Upload videos. Then upload the video. Test an existing video: From the left menu, click Content. Click the video you'd like to edit.
  3. In the Title box or under Thumbnail, click A/B Testing.
  4. Select either Title only, Thumbnail only, or Title and thumbnail.
  5. Upload up to 3 thumbnails and/or titles to test.
  6. Click Done.

How do you turn viewers into subscribers and regulars?

Ask, then give people reasons to come back. YouTube’s fake engagement policy says you’re allowed to encourage viewers to subscribe, like, share or comment. YouTube Studio reports subscribers gained by content type (videos, Shorts, live streams, posts and others), and its Audience tab sorts your monthly audience into new, casual and regular viewers.

Regular viewers have watched at least once a month for more than 6 of the past 12 months: your returning audience. Don’t expect every subscriber to watch every upload, though: YouTube notes that viewers, on average, subscribe to dozens of channels.

Playlists and Premieres

In YouTube Studio you can turn a playlist into a show, which organises its videos into seasons and episodes and may make it eligible for search, “Recommended shows” and “Continue watching” (documented by July 2026). Which YouTube Studio numbers show real growth?

Engaged views, watch time, click-through rate and your mix of new, casual and regular viewers tell you more than raw views. Since 24 August 2026 YouTube counts a view from the first frame on every format and calls the previous definition an “engaged view”, while click-through rate, average view duration, retention, recommendations and the Partner Program are unchanged. Never compare a view count from before that date with one from after.

How do you keep a growing channel safe?

Grow with real viewers only, share access without sharing passwords, and secure the Google Account behind the channel. YouTube’s fake engagement policy bans artificially inflating views, likes or comments, sub4sub offers and promoting view, like or subscriber services, and channels may be terminated. Subscribers YouTube identifies as spam, including purchased ones, don’t count toward your total.

Checked against YouTube Help: Fake engagement policy.

Checked against YouTube Help: Check your recent subscribers.

The policy also warns that if you hire someone to promote your channel, their decisions may impact your channel. A first Community Guidelines violation usually brings a warning that can expire after 90 days once you complete a policy training, and 3 strikes within 90 days may terminate the channel. Checked against YouTube Help: Fake engagement policy (enforcement section) To share the work, use channel permissions in YouTube Studio, which give people roles such as Manager, Editor or Viewer without access to your Google Account. Tasks for keeping it safe

When can a YouTube channel start earning?

Once it’s accepted into the YouTube Partner Program. Besides subscriber and watch-time or Shorts-view thresholds, YouTube requires following its monetization policies, being in a country or region where the program is available, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, advanced features access and a linked AdSense for YouTube account. Meeting the thresholds starts a review; it doesn’t admit you automatically.

Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube Partner Program overview & eligibility.

The current thresholds, and what YouTube pays, are in how much YouTube pays; the free YouTube money calculator estimates a monthly range from your views, niche and Shorts split.

Note the dates: YouTube says Partner Program updates start on 1 February 2027, and creators must review and accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027 to keep fully monetizing. Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube Partner Program overview & eligibility (banner) Its blog adds that new applicants from that date need higher watch-hour or Shorts-view totals, and that the change won’t impact creators already in the program. In listed countries, an expanded Partner Program unlocks fan funding and Shopping at lower thresholds, though not ad revenue. Product tagging through YouTube Shopping’s affiliate program needs Partner Program membership and a base in a listed country (the United States is listed; Canada and the UK aren’t), among other conditions. Why is my YouTube channel not growing?

Start where YouTube says it starts for long-form videos: whether viewers choose your video when it’s recommended, then how long they watch. If either is weak, fix the packaging or the video before anything else. YouTube’s performance FAQ also names outside factors (topic interest, competition and seasonality) and lists uploading less often than usual as a common reason for less traffic from Home or Suggested.

Checked against YouTube Help: Search & discovery tips (Video).

Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube performance FAQ & Troubleshooting.

Things YouTube says are not the cause:

  • One under-performing video doesn’t by itself hurt a channel.
  • Monetization status doesn’t affect discovery.
  • Making an unlisted video public doesn’t hurt it.
  • Channel location settings aren’t used for recommendations.

Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube performance FAQ & Troubleshooting.

Publish time isn’t known to affect a video’s long-term performance either, though it matters for live streams and Premieres and can help early viewership. What does a weekly routine for a growing channel look like?

One you can keep. YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence, so build a repeatable loop that batches the work, then hold whatever pace it gives you. Checked against YouTube Help: YouTube performance FAQ & Troubleshooting

Frequently asked questions

How do I grow my YouTube channel from zero subscribers?

Set the channel up first: phone verification unlocks custom thumbnails and videos longer than 15 minutes. Then make videos for one clearly defined audience, package each so that audience chooses to watch and keeps watching, add Shorts for discovery, and check YouTube Studio before changing course.

How often should I upload to grow on YouTube?

Whatever pace you can sustain. YouTube says there is no minimum posting cadence and that growth in views across uploads is not correlated with the time between uploads, though it lists uploading less often than usual as one common reason for less traffic from Home or Suggested, and says that after a break it may take some time to warm up your audience again.

What is the fastest way to get 1,000 subscribers?

Not by buying or trading them. YouTube’s fake engagement policy bans sub4sub offers and promoting subscriber services, its Terms of Service forbid paying or incentivising people to increase a channel’s subscribers, and subscribers it identifies as spam, including purchased ones, don’t count. Asking viewers to subscribe is allowed, and YouTube Studio reports subscribers gained by content type, so you can make more of what converts.

Does YouTube SEO still matter for growth?

For search, yes. YouTube says it ranks search results on relevance (how well the title, tags, description and video content match the query), engagement such as watch time for that query, and quality, and that it doesn’t accept payment for better organic placement. Tags count for little: YouTube calls them ‘Not important’. Recommendations work differently, using viewers’ watching behaviour, likes, dislikes, subscriptions and feedback.

Do I need to verify my YouTube channel to grow?

Not to start: any new channel without active strikes can upload videos and Shorts, make playlists and use the Posts tab, within daily limits. Phone verification unlocks intermediate features such as videos longer than 15 minutes and custom thumbnails; advanced features such as clickable links in long-form descriptions, chapters and A/B testing also need channel history or ID or video verification.
