X (Twitter) Username Generator

This Twitter username generator builds X handle ideas from your name or keyword and drops every idea that breaks X's username rules, so each one is 15 characters or fewer and uses only letters, numbers and underscores. Every idea comes with a display name and a link to check it yourself.

Part of Outfeed's free social media tools. Runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent anywhere, and the page never contacts X.

Style

Your name first, with a clear word for what you do.

Runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent anywhere, and this page never contacts X. Share links keep your words after the # in the address, which browsers do not send to a server.

X username rules every idea passes

Every idea is at most 15 characters, uses only letters (A–Z), numbers (0–9) and underscores (_), and never contains "admin". The generator runs each one through the same checks as our rule table for X, built from X's own help pages (checked October 2, 2026). Because help.x.com blocks automated readers, the pages were read from Internet Archive copies.

  • Admin: X's help says "Usernames containing the words X or Admin cannot be claimed." Any idea containing "admin" is removed, and if you type it, the word is left out. The "X" in that sentence replaced "Twitter" after the rebrand; taken literally it would ban the letter x, which X does not enforce.
  • Twitter: the page from before Twitter became X said "Usernames containing the words Twitter or Admin cannot be claimed." The current page no longer says so explicitly, so the generator leaves "twitter" out and flags it if it ever appears.
  • Minimum length: one X page says a username "must be more than 4 characters long"; another says your name "can be longer (50 characters) or shorter than 4 characters", implying 4. A 4-character idea gets a "4 characters" badge.
  • Underscores: X's help suggests adding one before or after a taken name (its example is @lindsay_ or @_lindsay), so the underscore option includes that pattern.

How to use the Twitter username generator

  1. Type your name or keyword. Add a second word or niche if you want it in some ideas.
  2. Pick a style. Professional, creative, funny, gaming, aesthetic or short.
  3. Choose the options. Allow underscores or numbers, and show which ideas also fit other platforms.
  4. Copy, then check. Open x.com/<handle> to see if it is taken, then claim it in X's settings (see how to change your username on X). Reshuffle for a new set, or copy the share link to keep this one.

Good Twitter username ideas by style

The best ideas follow a few simple patterns: name plus niche, initials plus keyword, or name plus a verb. These Twitter username ideas for "Maya Chen" and "coffee" came straight out of the generator:

  • Professional: @MayaChen , @Maya_Builds , @MayaCoffee
  • Creative: @Maya_Stitches , @mccoffee , @MayaChenCoffee
  • Short: @mayac , @maya_ , @_maya
  • Funny: @napmaya , @sleepymaya , @gremlin_maya

Good Twitter names read cleanly in a reply, where the @handle is often all people see. Professional handles lead with your name; creative ones add a verb; short ones cut it down to a first name, an initial or an underscore. Funny Twitter usernames land best when the joke is about you, and they age faster, so keep one plain option in reserve.

One handle on every platform

X's 15-character cap is the lowest maximum of the nine platforms in our rule table, so a handle that fits X usually fits elsewhere, unless it has an underscore. "maya_chen" is fine on X but fails on Facebook, LinkedIn and Bluesky. Turn on "Other platforms" to see the fit for every idea. Instagram and Threads do not publish their username rules, so those badges rest on widely reported limits rather than published rules.

To test one handle on all nine at once, paste it into the social media username checker. For ideas that are not tied to X, try the username generator or the TikTok username generator.

Handle and display name together

Each idea comes with a display name, kept within X's 50-character limit. The display name is the line above your @handle, can include spaces, and can be changed any time (a verified account loses its blue check until X re-reviews it), so it is where your full name or brand goes. X does not document whether styled letters work there; if you want to try them, the X font generator shows what each style costs, and keep a plain version ready.

Once the handle is yours, Outfeed AI drafts, previews and schedules your posts from one chat. On X it publishes text posts only, within a monthly X post allowance that depends on your plan. Draft a first post with the Twitter post generator, and plan the timing with how to schedule tweets.

This generator stays free with no sign-up. The app is paid: Starter includes a 3-day free trial with 100 AI credits, card required; Pro and Agency are billed from the first day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good username for X (Twitter)?

A good X username is short, easy to say out loud and the same as your name on other platforms, so people can find and @mention you without guessing. Use your name or brand first and a niche word only if it adds meaning. Avoid look-alike characters such as l, I and 1 or O and 0, and long strings of numbers or underscores.

How long can an X username be?

Up to 15 characters. X words the minimum two ways: one help page says a username "must be more than 4 characters long", while another says your name "can be longer (50 characters) or shorter than 4 characters", which implies 4 is the floor. Five characters or more is the safe choice, and this generator marks any 4-character idea so you can decide.

What characters are allowed in an X username?

Only letters (A–Z), numbers (0–9) and underscores (_). No spaces, dashes, periods or other symbols, and no styled letters. X's help also says "Usernames containing the words X or Admin cannot be claimed." Read literally that would block every handle with the letter x, which is plainly not enforced; before the rebrand the same line read "Usernames containing the words Twitter or Admin cannot be claimed." So treat "admin" as refused and expect "twitter" to be refused too. (X Help, read from an archived copy captured September 19, 2026.)

How do I check if an X username is available?

Open x.com/ followed by the handle in your browser. If a profile loads, the name is taken. If it does not, try it in your X account settings, which is the only real test, because X notes that suspended and deactivated usernames are not immediately available. This generator sends no requests to X; every "Open x.com" link is one you click yourself.

What's the difference between an X username and a display name?

Your username is your @handle: it is unique, sits in your profile address and follows the rules above. Your display name is the name shown above it. X's help says: "Your display name can be up to 50 characters long." and that you can update it at any time. It can include spaces, but X does not document whether styled letters or symbols are accepted there.
