Campaign name
Becomes the utm_campaign value on every tracking link.
utm_campaign=campaign
Objective
Pick one. One objective means one set of KPIs you can judge the campaign by.
Introduce a new product, feature or event. Measured by: reach or impressions in launch week, sessions from the campaign's utm links, conversions in the campaign window.
Audience
One audience, described by their situation rather than an age bracket.
Key message and offer
One sentence people should remember, the proof that makes it believable, and the reason to act now.
Start and end dates
The plan splits the range into tease, launch, sustain and last call. Up to 92 days.
Platforms
Tick each one the campaign runs on, give it a role, and set how often it posts in a normal week.
Owner and approver
Who drafts and schedules, and who signs off each post before it goes out.
Landing page URL
Where the campaign sends people. You get one tagged link per platform.
Optional: budget, KPI targets and risks
Your own numbers only. The template suggests no amounts and no benchmarks.
Budget
Total: USD 0
KPI targets for launch
Set targets from your own past campaigns. Results come from each platform's analytics and your web analytics.
- Add a start date and an end date to build the post plan.
- Tick at least one platform.

How the post plan is builtShowHide
- Phases are a planning assumption: tease 25% of the days, launch 15%, last call 15%, sustain the rest. Launch runs at 2× your weekly cadence and last call at 1.5×, never more than one post a day per platform.
- Formats are the ones Outfeed AI can publish on each platform. Anything else (an Instagram Story, an X post with an image) is marked as posted in the platform's own app.
- Targets, budget and results are yours. The template suggests no benchmark numbers.
- Posts per phase = posts a week × phase multiplier × days in the phase ÷ 7, rounded, with at least one post per platform per phase. Launch posts start on launch day and last-call posts end on the final day.
- Copy ideas are prompts built from your message, proof points and offer. They are a starting point, not finished copy.
A social media campaign template turns one time-boxed goal into three things you can act on: a campaign brief, a dated post plan for each platform and a tracking link per channel. Fill in the 8 fields above or load the worked example, then export the plan to CSV for Google Sheets or Excel. It is one of our free social media tools, and it runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent anywhere.
What a social media campaign template includes
- The brief. Objective, audience, key message, proof points and offer: the why and the who.
- Platforms and roles. Which networks lead, which support, which only carry reminders, and how often each posts.
- Phases. Tease, launch, sustain and last call, each with dates and a post count.
- The content list. Every post with its date, platform, format, copy idea, owner and status.
- Tracking links. One UTM-tagged link per platform, so visits are credited to this campaign.
- Budget. Your own line items, totalled. The template suggests no amounts.
- Measurement plan and results sheet. KPIs tied to the objective, the target you set and a blank Actual column.
- Risks. What could slip, and what you will do if it does.
How to plan a campaign with the template
Six steps take you from a goal to a campaign plan you can hand to a team:
- Pick one objective. Awareness, engagement, website traffic, conversions or a launch. One objective means one set of KPIs, which is what lets you judge the campaign at the end.
- Write the audience and the message. One audience, one sentence people should remember, the proof that makes it believable and the offer that gives them a reason to act now.
- Choose platforms and formats. Tick the platforms, give each a role and set posts per week. Formats are limited to what Outfeed AI can publish on each one: text posts on X; feed posts, carousels or Reels on Instagram. Check the creative against our image sizes for every platform.
- Set the dates. The template splits the range into phases and spaces posts across each one. Launch runs at twice your weekly cadence. That is our planning assumption, and you can change any row.
- Add links and KPI targets. Paste the landing page URL to get a tagged link per platform, then type your own targets.
- Name the owner and the approver. Every row carries an owner and a status, so marketing campaign planning doesn't stall waiting for a sign-off.
The worked example: a 3-week launch
"Load worked example" fills every field for Tallyleaf Paper Co., a fictional stationery brand pre-selling a 2027 planner over 21 days on Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn. Instagram is the lead channel at three posts a week; TikTok and LinkedIn support at two. The dates split into a 5-day tease, a 3-day launch, a 10-day sustain and a 3-day last call, which comes to 25 posts, each with a format, a copy idea, an owner and a status.
The budget and KPI targets in the example are illustrative placeholders, not benchmarks, and the results column is empty because nothing in it happened. Read how the brief and the plan fit together, then overwrite it with your own campaign.
KPIs that match the objective
- Awareness: reach or impressions and video views, from each platform's own analytics. On X, views and impressions are two different numbers.
- Engagement: engagement rate, comments, shares and saves. Our engagement rate calculator works out the rate, and the guide to social media KPIs and their formulas explains each metric.
- Website traffic: sessions from the campaign's UTM links, read in your web analytics.
- Conversions: conversions and conversion rate from those same UTM sessions.
- Launch: reach in launch week, UTM sessions and conversions inside the campaign window.
Targets are left blank on purpose. Set them from your own past campaigns rather than someone else's average.
Campaign vs strategy vs calendar
A campaign is time-boxed and has one objective, such as a post series for World Emoji Day on 17 July. A strategy is ongoing: it decides audience, channels and cadence for the quarter, and the social media strategy template builds it. A calendar is the always-on schedule that campaigns sit inside, so plan it with the content calendar template. When the campaign ends, write it up with the social media report template, and tag any extra links with the UTM generator.
From plan to published posts
A plan still leaves every post to write. Copy it as Markdown, paste it into Outfeed AI, a chat-first social media manager, and draft each post in one chat, with a preview for every platform, then schedule them across Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest and Bluesky. Outfeed has no analytics, so results still come from each platform and your web analytics. It posts to Facebook Pages only, sends text-only posts to X within a monthly X allowance per plan, and TikTok posts sent from Outfeed currently publish as private while TikTok reviews the app.
Starter is $29/mo and Pro is $59/mo, both flat rather than per seat; Agency is $149 per seat/mo. Starter includes a 3-day free trial with 100 AI credits. Card required. Pro and Agency are billed from the first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a social media campaign template include?
A social media campaign template should cover the objective, the audience, the key message and proof points, the offer, the platforms and what each one is for, the start and end dates, the budget, who owns and who approves the work, the KPIs, a dated post plan, a tracking link per platform and a place to record results. This template collects all of them from 8 fields plus optional budget, targets and risks.
What is a campaign brief, and how is it different from a campaign plan?
A campaign brief is the why and the who: the objective, the audience, the message, the offer, the dates, the budget and who signs off. A campaign plan is the what and the when: every post with its date, platform, format, copy idea, owner and status. Teams usually agree the brief first and build the plan from it. This template writes both from the same answers, so they cannot disagree.
What's the difference between a social media strategy and a campaign?
A strategy is ongoing. It decides your audience, channels, content pillars and cadence for months at a time. A campaign is time-boxed, with one objective, a start and an end date, and a result you can judge. Campaigns sit inside a strategy. If you need the ongoing plan, use the free social media strategy template on this site.
How do I measure a social media campaign?
Choose KPIs that match the one objective, set a target for each before the campaign starts, and tag every link with UTM parameters so your web analytics can attribute visits and conversions to the campaign. Afterwards, read reach, engagement and clicks from each platform's own analytics and sessions and conversions from your web analytics, then fill the Actual column in the results sheet.
Is there a Google Sheets or Excel version?
Yes. Download the post plan as a CSV file and it opens directly in Excel. In Google Sheets, use File, then Import, then Upload. The results sheet downloads as a separate CSV. There is no email gate and no signup, and you can also copy the whole plan as Markdown or print it to PDF.
