Freelance Social Media Manager Rate Calculator
There is no reliable public figure for freelance social media manager rates. Government wage data exclude the self-employed, and the few published freelance numbers are worldwide or rest on tiny samples. The honest method is to price from your own hourly rate and the hours each deliverable takes. This calculator turns those into hours per month, a monthly retainer, per-post prices and three packages, with every formula shown. It runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Freelance social media manager rates: what the published figures say
The published figures are thin, and none of them is your rate. The best-known is one marketplace's: from historical contracts worldwide, Upwork showed social media managers a median band of $14–$35 an hour (Upwork, checked )Archived copy, 21 April 2026.
Upwork also publishes its own undated estimates for intermediate U.S.-based specialists: $400–$2,000 per month for small-business account management on two channels, and $2,500–$10,000 per month for large businesses. Why none of this sets your price: the hourly band is worldwide, the monthly estimates are undated, and neither gives a sample size. BLS occupational wage data (OEWS) exclude the self-employed, so no BLS wage figure describes what freelance social media managers charge. How the rate calculator works
Hours per month = posts × minutes for each format, plus the time to adapt each post for every extra platform, plus community hours × 52 ÷ 12, plus reporting, ad management, calls and admin, plus revision rounds, then your buffer on top. Retainer = hours × your rate.
Per-deliverable prices use the same minutes, so a per-post price and the retainer are built from one set of numbers. The retainer also carries calls, admin and the buffer, which per-post prices leave out. Every number comes from you; the "Load example" values are made up to show the maths, not a suggested rate or a time standard. After rounding, the tool shows your effective hourly rate and price per published post as a check.
Work out your hourly rate before you price anything
Your floor rate = (take-home pay + business costs) ÷ (1 − tax set-aside %) ÷ (1 − fee %) ÷ billable hours a year. Billable hours are fewer than hours worked, because admin, sales and learning are unpaid. Fees are a percentage you type in for your payment processor or marketplace.
The tax set-aside is your own figure. Some official rules to factor in:
- In the U.S., the self-employment tax rate is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare); you must file Schedule SE if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more, and you can deduct the employer-equivalent portion when figuring adjusted gross income. Source: IRS: Self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare taxes), checked
- The IRS says individuals, including sole proprietors, generally have to make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more when they file, using Form 1040-ES. Source: IRS: Estimated taxes, checked
- In Canada (outside Quebec), self-employed people pay both halves of Canada Pension Plan contributions: the full 11.9% on net business income in 2026, up to a maximum of $8,460.90, on earnings up to the $74,600 ceiling (after a $3,500 basic amount). Amounts are in Canadian dollars. Source: Government of Canada: Contributions to the Canada Pension Plan, checked ; page date: 2026 figures
- In the UK, the trading allowance lets individuals earn up to £1,000 a year in gross trading income tax-free; above that you can deduct the £1,000 allowance instead of expenses, and you may still need to register for Self Assessment in some circumstances. Hourly, retainer, per post or project: which pricing model fits
Most freelancers use a retainer for ongoing work and the other three around it.
- Monthly retainer for ongoing management. A fixed scope makes scope creep visible: extra posts become a change, not a favour.
- Per post for overflow or one-off content, so occasional work is still paid for the time it takes.
- Project fee for an audit, a strategy or onboarding, which have a clear end.
- Hourly for advice and training, where the time is the product.
Turn the numbers into social media management pricing packages
The three tiers come from your own inputs. Growth copies them; Essential and Full service start at half and one and a half times your posts and platforms, and each tier switches community management, reporting and ad management on or off. Ad management starts outside every tier, as an add-on you price from its own hours, so the tiers stay comparable. Say in writing what each tier excludes: ad spend is paid by the client to each platform, and paid tools or stock licences are listed separately. Social media marketing pricing laid out this way lets a client see exactly what moves the price from one tier to the next.
For tier design, read how to structure social media management packages, and for the business side, becoming a freelance social media manager. Then copy the summary into the social media proposal template and put the agreed fee in the social media contract template.
Count your software as a business cost
Put your scheduler's price into the business costs in step 1. For Outfeed AI: Starter and Pro are flat monthly prices, not billed per seat. Agency is billed per seat. Enterprise is custom. Starter is $29 per month and Pro is $59 per month, both billed monthly. A solo freelancer fits Starter or Pro, and a three-person agency fits Pro (3 members, 25 accounts) until it needs more members or accounts. Agency is billed per seat: three seats cost $447 a month, billed monthly. Agency's 250 accounts is an organization-wide cap; it does not grow with seats. The trade-off is explained in per-seat vs per-account pricing.
Outfeed publishes to 9 platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest, Bluesky). Know the limits before you quote client work through it:
- Facebook: Connected with Facebook Login; you pick from the Facebook Pages you manage. Outfeed publishes to Pages only. It has no permission to post to a personal profile or to Groups.
- LinkedIn: Connected with LinkedIn sign-in to your personal LinkedIn profile. Outfeed posts as you, the member; it does not post to LinkedIn Company Pages.
- TikTok: TikTok posts from Outfeed currently publish as PRIVATE, visible only to the connected account, while TikTok reviews the Outfeed app. They do not reach followers yet. The composer shows this warning too.
- X: Text-only posts up to 280 characters as X counts them (links count 23, emoji and CJK count 2). Images and video cannot be sent to X yet. X posts are capped per billing period by plan. If the cap is reached, new X posts are refused until the next period or an upgrade.
- Instagram: Stories (image or video) are not published to Instagram. No first-comment scheduling. Outfeed does not request Instagram's comment permission and never posts a comment.
- Outfeed has no analytics, inbox, social listening or client reporting, so keep your reporting and community management hours in the quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much should a freelance social media manager charge per hour?
There is no reliable public average. BLS occupational wage data (OEWS) exclude the self-employed, so no BLS wage figure describes what freelance social media managers charge. The closest published figure is one marketplace's: Upwork showed a median band of $14–$35 an hour for social media managers, from historical contracts worldwide (Upwork, as of 21 April 2026, archived copy). That is not a U.S. rate and not your rate. Work out your own floor rate instead: the calculator's "Work out my hourly rate" option does the sum from your pay, costs, tax and hours.
How much do freelance social media managers charge per month?
Upwork's own undated estimate for intermediate U.S.-based specialists is $400–$2,000 per month for small-business account management on two channels, and $2,500–$10,000 per month for large businesses (Upwork, as of 21 April 2026, archived copy). Those are Upwork's estimates, not a survey. Your own retainer is your monthly hours × your hourly rate, which the calculator works out line by line.
How much should I charge per social media post?
Price a post from the time it takes: (minutes to create, caption and schedule it + revision rounds × minutes per round) ÷ 60 × your hourly rate. Each extra platform adds the minutes it takes to adapt and schedule the post there. We don't quote a per-post figure because no reliable public one exists, and a static image and a short video can take very different amounts of time.
Should I charge hourly or a monthly retainer?
Use a monthly retainer for ongoing management, a per-post price for overflow or one-off content, a project fee for an audit, a strategy or onboarding, and an hourly rate for advice and training. The calculator prices all four from the same hours, so the numbers agree with each other.
How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate?
Add your target take-home pay to your yearly business costs, divide by (1 − your tax set-aside %), divide by (1 − any payment or marketplace fee %), then divide by your billable hours a year (billable hours per week × working weeks). In the U.S., one input to consider is self-employment tax of 15.3% (IRS). This is not tax advice; check with a tax professional where you work.
Does the calculator save or send my numbers?
No. It runs in your browser and saves nothing. The share link keeps your inputs in the part of the URL after the #, which browsers do not send to a server, so they reach someone only if you share the link.
