Instagram Post Generator with Live Preview

This free Instagram post generator drafts the text for your next post, then shows it in a feed preview before you publish: your photo at the real crop, roughly where "... more" cuts in, and a count against the 2,200-character limit. Pick a post type and tone, add three details, and you get three drafts to choose from. Your photos stay on your device.

Length against Instagram's caption limit0 / 2,200 characters

Where "... more" lands: Instagram does not publish where the caption is cut with '... more'. Meta's ads guide recommends 125 characters of primary text for feed and Story ads; treat any organic cut-off figure as community-tested. This preview cuts at the first two lines or 125 characters, whichever comes first, so treat the marker as approximate.

In your profile grid: posts show as 3:4 tiles (widely reported; Instagram hasn't published the tile ratio on a help page). A 4:5 post loses about 3.1% from each side there. Planning one image across several grid posts? The Instagram grid maker splits it into tiles and previews the layout.

First comment (hashtags)

#yourniche #yourtopic #yourcity

Some accounts keep hashtags out of the post text and add them as the first comment instead. Build a set for your niche with the Instagram hashtag generator.

How this tool works: it is template-based and runs in your browser. The drafts come from hand-written post structures filled with your topic and details. Nothing you type or upload is sent anywhere, and there is no sign-up.

How to use the Instagram post generator

  1. Pick the post type. Product, behind the scenes, tip, customer words, announcement, question, carousel intro or Reel cover post. The detail fields change to match.
  2. Add your topic and three details. The details are what make a post yours: what the product does, when the event is, the tip itself. Leave them blank and you get a shorter, more general draft.
  3. Choose a tone and generate. Friendly, expert, playful or direct. You get three drafts, each opening with a different hook pattern. Regenerate for a fresh set.
  4. Add a photo and pick the frame. Upload one image, or two to 10 for a carousel, and choose 1:1, 4:5 or 3:4.
  5. Check the preview, then copy or download. Edit the text right under the preview, copy it when it reads well, or save a PNG of the preview to share for feedback.

A pre-publish check, not a prank tool

Many Instagram post makers in search results pitch themselves for jokes and memes. This one has a narrower job: showing you your own post before your followers see it. That is why the preview has a neutral monogram avatar, your handle, no platform logo, no verified badge and no like or follower counts to edit, and why every PNG is stamped "Preview · made with outfeed.ai".

Use it for previews and mockups of your own posts, or a client's with their say-so, such as a draft you need signed off before it goes live. Don't use it to imitate a real person's or brand's account.

What the Instagram post preview checks

The preview is built around the details that go wrong most often when a post goes live. The official figures come from Instagram's or Meta's own documentation, and where there is no official figure, the page says so.

  • Crop and frame. Feed photos can be 1080 x 1080 (1:1), 1080 x 1350 (4:5) or 1080 x 1440 (3:4). The 3:4 size can only be posted from the Instagram app, because the publishing API that schedulers use stops at 4:5. If your photo doesn't match the frame, the tool tells you how much is cropped and from which sides.
  • The profile grid. Since January 2025 the grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles. That ratio is widely reported, but Instagram hasn't published it on a help page. A 4:5 post loses a sliver at each side in the grid; a square post loses more.
  • Where "... more" lands. Instagram doesn't publish its cut-off for post text. Meta's ads guide recommends 125 characters of primary text, so the preview marks an approximate cut at two lines or 125 characters and lets you expand it.
  • The 2,200-character limit. The counter checks your text against the 2,200-character caption limit in Instagram's publishing API, counted in UTF-16 units as Outfeed's publisher checks it, so most emoji count as two or more.
  • Carousels and themes. Two or more photos add slide arrows, a slide counter and dots, and every slide uses the same frame, as it does on Instagram. Switch between light and dark to check your photo against both backgrounds.

Anatomy of an Instagram post that stops the scroll

Every draft this Instagram post creator writes has the same four parts, and knowing why each one is there makes editing faster:

  • The hook line. The only part most people read before the cut. It has to make sense on its own, which is why the drafts put a question, a number or a plain statement first and leave the details for later.
  • The body. Your details, as short labelled lines or a list. Phones reward white space, so each point gets its own line.
  • The call to action. One clear next step (save, comment, tap the link in bio) matched to the post type. A question post asks for an answer; a tip asks for a save.
  • The first comment. Some accounts keep hashtags out of the main text and add them as the first comment. The preview leaves a placeholder for them.

After the preview: finish the post

A post is more than its text. These free tools and guides pick up where this one stops:

Want it written in your brand voice?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I preview an Instagram post before posting?

Add your photo (or up to 10 for a carousel), pick the frame (1:1, 4:5 or 3:4), then generate post text or paste your own. The preview shows how the photo crops, roughly where the text is cut with '... more', and how many characters you have used. Your photos and text stay on your device: nothing is uploaded or published.

Where does Instagram cut the text with '... more'?

Instagram does not publish the exact point where it cuts a post's text in the feed. Meta's ads guide recommends 125 characters of primary text for feed ads, so this preview marks an approximate cut at the first two lines or 125 characters, whichever comes first. Put your hook in the first line and it will show whatever the exact cut turns out to be.

Can I preview my Instagram grid before posting?

This tool previews one post and tells you how a post in the chosen frame sits in the profile grid, which shows posts as 3:4 tiles. To split one image across several grid posts and preview that layout, use the free Instagram grid maker.

Can I use this to make a post mockup for a client?

Yes, for your own planned posts or a client's, for example to get sign-off before anything goes live. Don't use it to imitate someone else's account. The downloaded PNG carries a visible 'Preview · made with outfeed.ai' label, so anyone you send it to can see it is a preview and not a live post.

Is this an AI Instagram post generator?

No. It is free and formula-based: it fills hand-written post structures with your topic and details, entirely in your browser. The Outfeed app is different. It drafts posts with AI in your brand voice and can schedule and publish them to Instagram and eight other platforms.
