Instagram lets you try a reel on people who don’t follow you before your followers see it. Both recommend videos beyond your followers, under different rules.

So for Instagram Reels vs TikTok, which is better depends on what you post and who for. Every figure below comes from Instagram’s or TikTok’s own pages, with the date each was checked. For TikTok basics, start with how to use TikTok.

Instagram Reels vs TikTok: which is better?

Choose TikTok for long videos and licensed music on a business account, Instagram for testing a reel on non-followers first, and both if your audience is split between them. Here is the verdict by goal:

Reach people who don’t follow you: either. Instagram suggests reels to people who don’t follow the account, though not reels over 3 minutes, and TikTok has said follower count isn’t a direct factor in its recommendations.

Post long videos: TikTok, with uploads of up to 60 minutes in the app. Instagram reels stop at 20 minutes.

Use music on a business account: TikTok. Its Commercial Music Library holds about 1 million songs; Meta’s Sound Collection, over 14,000.

Test before your followers see it: Instagram, with trial reels.

Reach both audiences: post your own clean file to each app.

Which reaches people who don’t follow you?

Both apps recommend videos beyond your followers, under different rules. Instagram picks suggested reels from accounts people don’t follow, based on their activity, and won’t recommend reels over 3 minutes to new audiences. It shows reels less often when they’re muted, blurry or low resolution, carry borders, logos or watermarks, are mostly covered by text, or aren’t original. Which is better for business accounts?

For music, TikTok: a business account there gets a far larger licensed library. TikTok’s Commercial Music Library holds about 1 million pre-cleared songs, free for businesses, and a Business Account sees only these Commercial Sounds under Add sound. Checked against TikTok Business Help Center: How to use the Commercial Music Library TikTok also says a Business Account can’t use music that isn’t licensed for commercial use. On Instagram, the licensed music library is for personal, non-commercial use, so certain business accounts and post types don’t get it. They can use Meta’s Sound Collection instead: over 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds that can be used commercially. For testing, Instagram offers trial reels: your followers won’t see one in Feed or Reels, and it stays off your profile unless you share it to everyone. Checked against Instagram Help Center: About trial reels on Instagram An account loses access if it can’t appear in recommendations.

On TikTok, Creator Search Insights helps at the planning stage. It shows topics people search for, including a Content gap filter for under-served searches, where the tool is available; its Searches by followers filter needs more than 1,000 followers. To open it:

In the app:

  1. In the TikTok app, tap the Search button at the top.
  2. Search "Creator Search Insights" and tap View at the top of the search results.

Can you post the same video to both?

You can, as long as it’s your own video and each app gets a clean copy. Instagram shows reels less often when they carry logos or watermarks or aren’t original. TikTok’s originality policy treats copied content, largely repurposed content without creative edits, low-value compilations and videos with someone else’s visible watermark as unoriginal, and unoriginal content may be removed from the For You feed. So export the finished video without another app’s watermark, keep reels to 3 minutes or less if you want Instagram to be able to recommend them to new audiences, and write each caption for its app. Still choosing a format on Instagram? TikTok said in 2020 that follower count isn’t a direct factor in its recommendations, and its Help Center says interactions such as watch time generally weigh most in For You. Which pays creators more, TikTok or Instagram?

This comparison doesn’t rank them on pay, because earnings depend on each app’s creator programs and their rules. Does Instagram penalize TikTok watermarks?

Instagram says it shows reels less often when they contain borders, logos or watermarks, or aren’t original, and a TikTok watermark is a watermark.
