Instagram Reels vs Posts: Which Format to Use When

Instagram reels vs posts comes down to what you’re sharing. One video is a reel, one photo is a photo post, and several photos or videos make a carousel. Instagram suggests reels to people who don’t follow you, but photo posts and carousels can be suggested in Feed, Reels and Explore too. Stories, the fourth format, disappear after 24 hours.

For how each format works and reaches people, this comparison uses only Instagram’s own help articles and announcements, not third-party reach studies. If you’re still learning where each format lives in the app, start with how to use Instagram.

What is the difference between a reel and a post on Instagram?

A reel is a single video. A post, in everyday use, means a photo or a carousel in your feed. Instagram drew that line itself in 2022, when Meta announced that new video posts would be shared as reels, so a lone video you post today is a reel. The exception is a video inside a carousel, which isn’t one.

Where each format lives:

  • Reels show in your profile’s Reels tab and your followers’ feeds, and Instagram suggests them to people who don’t follow you.
  • Photo posts and carousels sit on your main profile grid and in followers’ feeds, and can appear as suggested posts in Feed, Reels and Explore.
  • Stories disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours unless you add them to a Highlight, and are saved to your Stories Archive by default. Checked against Instagram Help Center: How long Instagram stories remain visible

Do reels get more reach than posts? What Instagram says

Instagram’s help articles on how reels and posts get suggested don’t say reels get more reach, and give no reach figures for any format. Checked against Instagram Help Center: What kind of reels you may see on Instagram + How Instagram suggests posts (no reach-by-format claim)Not verified They describe how each format reaches people who don’t follow you, and reels carry extra rules on length, originality and image quality.

  • Suggested reels come from accounts you don’t follow, chosen from your activity.
  • Some reels are shown less often: ones that are muted, blurry or low resolution, carry borders, logos or watermarks, are mostly covered by text, or aren’t original. Checked against Instagram Help Center: What kind of reels you may see on Instagram
  • Others are favoured: reels that may entertain a wide audience, can inspire people to create, use music from Instagram’s library or original audio made with the Reels audio tool, are filmed vertically, or show meaningful events.
  • Your followers still see your reels. In Instagram’s words: “Reels from people you follow will still be shown on their profile and in your feed, and we won’t make them less visible.”
  • Long reels aren’t pushed to new viewers. Reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences. Checked against Instagram Help Center: How do I post a video? (serves "Record a reel on Instagram")
  • Posts get suggested too. Outside Instagram’s own pages, there’s a reminder of what one reel can do: in 2023, CBS News reported that a Roman reenactor’s viral Instagram reel helped the “how often do you think about the Roman Empire?” trend take off.

Views doesn’t count the same thing on every format. On a reel, Views counts each time it starts to play or replays, while the number on each reel in your profile’s Reels tab counts plays only, without replays. Should you post a video as a reel or a post?

For a single video there’s no separate choice any more: it’s a reel. Meta announced on 21 July 2022 that new Instagram video posts shorter than 15 minutes would be shared as reels, and Instagram’s Help Center now answers “How do I post a video?” with its article on recording a reel. Inside a carousel, though, a video isn’t a reel.

Decision flowchart for choosing an Instagram format. One video becomes a Reel. Several photos or videos become a carousel of up to 20 items, and videos inside it are not Reels. One photo becomes a photo post. A side note says Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences.

What changed in July 2022

Meta’s 21 July 2022 announcement said the switch would happen “in the coming weeks”, that videos posted before it would stay videos, and that the video and Reels tabs on profiles would merge. Recommendation then applied only to public reels under 90 seconds. Today the cut-off for new audiences is 3 minutes.

Use a reel when

  • The idea only works in motion, and reaching people who don’t follow you matters.
  • You can make the point in 3 minutes or less. For upload limits, see how long an Instagram video can be.
  • The footage is yours and clean: Instagram shows fewer reels that carry logos or watermarks or aren’t original.
  • You’d like to test it on non-followers first. A trial reel isn’t shown to your followers in Feed or Reels, and stays off your profile, unless you share it to everyone.

When a photo post or carousel is the better choice

Pick a photo post for one image that stands on its own, and a carousel for a sequence or a set: tutorial steps, a before-and-after, a trip recap. Both sit on your main grid and can still be suggested to people who don’t follow you. A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos when you post from Instagram, but the videos in it don’t count as reels.

That 20 applies in the app and on instagram.com. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Share a post with multiple photos or videos on Instagram The publishing API that scheduling tools use takes up to 10. Checked against Meta for Developers: Instagram Graph API, IG User Media reference See how many photos you can post on Instagram for every limit.

Three things to know before you build a carousel. Likes and comments apply to the whole post, not to each slide. After sharing, you can reorder or remove items and edit the caption, but you can’t add new photos or videos. And videos in a carousel “are not considered reels and will not show up in the Reels tab or have reels features.”

Checked against Instagram Help Center: Share a post with multiple photos or videos on Instagram.

Use a photo post when

  • One image does the whole job and motion wouldn’t add anything: a product shot, an announcement, a quote card.
  • The content is a sequence people swipe through in order, such as a how-to or a checklist.
  • You have a set from one moment: an event, a trip, a product from several angles.

Do reels show up on your grid?

They can. A reel’s Manage menu includes Add to profile grid, which puts it on your main grid, and Pin to your reels, which pins it to the top of the Reels tab on your profile. Trial reels are the exception: they stay off your profile unless you share them to everyone.

Instagram’s steps, the same on iPhone and Android:

On iPhone:

  1. Open your reel.
  2. Tap Options in the bottom right of the reel.
  3. Tap Manage. From here you can tap Edit, Turn off commenting, Hide likes, Add to profile grid, Pin to your reels, or Archive.

Photo posts and carousels go on the main grid.

Reels vs posts: FAQ

Is it better to post a reel or a post on Instagram?

It depends on what you’re sharing. Instagram suggests reels to people who don’t follow you, though it won’t recommend reels over 3 minutes to new audiences, so a reel suits a video meant for new viewers. A photo post suits one image, a carousel suits a set, and posts can be suggested in Feed, Reels and Explore too.

Do reels get more reach than posts?

Instagram’s help articles on how reels and posts get suggested don’t say so and give no reach figures by format. They say suggested reels come from accounts you don’t follow, that reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences, and that blurry, watermarked or unoriginal reels are shown less often. Posts can be suggested in Feed, Reels and Explore too.

Should I post a video as a reel or a post?

For a single video there’s no separate choice: it’s a reel. Meta announced on 21 July 2022 that new Instagram video posts shorter than 15 minutes would be shared as reels. Videos inside a carousel are the exception: they aren’t reels and don’t appear in the Reels tab.

Do reels show up on your grid?

They can. A reel’s Options > Manage menu includes Add to profile grid, which puts it on your main grid, and Pin to your reels, which pins it to the top of the Reels tab on your profile. Trial reels stay off your profile unless you share them to everyone.

Are carousels better than reels?

They do different jobs. A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos in the Instagram app (10 through the publishing API that scheduling tools use), likes and comments apply to the whole post, and its videos aren’t reels. A reel is one video, which Instagram may suggest to people who don’t follow you.
