What are the best apps like TikTok?
The best alternative depends on what you want to keep from TikTok. Each pick rests on a rule from that app’s own pages:
- Reaching people who don’t follow you: Instagram Reels. Instagram suggests reels from accounts people don’t follow, though not reels over 3 minutes.
- Videos of 3 minutes or less: YouTube Shorts, which counts square or vertical uploads of up to 3 min as Shorts (here is how to upload a YouTube Short).
- Longer clips: Bluesky, up to 10 minutes, or Instagram, up to 20.
- A Facebook audience: Facebook, where every video except Stories and Live is now a reel.
- Choosing your own feed: Bluesky’s custom feeds.
- Snapchat users aged 16 or older: Spotlight, where it’s available.
Is TikTok going away in the US?
TikTok is still running in the US, now through a new company set up in January 2026, so switching apps is a choice rather than a necessity.
TikTok’s US status: TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC was established on 23 January 2026 to run TikTok for US users, under a seven-member, majority-American board, and said it would retrain the US recommendation algorithm on US user data in Oracle’s US cloud. TikTok was still announcing US products in October 2026, such as bringing its Ad Network to US advertisers on 5 October. Checked against TikTok Newsroom: TikTok Unveils AI-Powered Updates for Advertisers (5 October 2026)

YouTube Shorts
On YouTube, a square or vertical video of up to 3 min uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 is categorized as a Short. Videos uploaded before that date keep their old category, and anything horizontal or longer is treated as a regular YouTube video. For frame sizes and the safe zone, see YouTube Shorts dimensions; for what YouTube says helps a Short, see YouTube Shorts best practices.
Instagram Reels
On Instagram, posting a single video means posting a reel: its Help Center answers “How do I post a video?” with its article on recording reels of up to 20 minutes. Reels over 3 minutes won’t be recommended to new audiences, and Instagram notes that Reels isn’t currently available to everyone: some accounts may be able to see reels but not record them. Checked against Instagram Help Center: How do I post a video? (serves "Record a reel on Instagram")
The switch dates from 21 July 2022, when Meta announced that new video posts shorter than 15 minutes would be shared as reels. Checked against About Meta newsroom: Introducing New Ways to Collaborate and Create With Reels (21 July 2022) For more, see what reels are and our head-to-head of Instagram Reels vs TikTok.
Facebook Reels
Facebook turned every video into a reel: since Meta’s September 2025 update, every video posted to Facebook except Stories and Live is shared as a reel, regardless of length or orientation. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Create a reel on Facebook
Bluesky video and custom feeds
Bluesky added video on 11 September 2024, one video per post of up to 60 seconds. Checked against Bluesky blog: Share video on Bluesky! Since 25 August 2026, a post can carry a video of up to 10 minutes and 300 MB. Checked against Official @bsky.app account on Bluesky
Bluesky also lets you choose your feed. Custom feeds let you pick the algorithm behind your timeline from an open marketplace of feeds built by Bluesky and third-party developers, found under My Feeds. Checked against Bluesky Help Center (Zendesk): Moderation and Custom Feeds More in what Bluesky is.
Snapchat Spotlight
Snapchat’s answer is Spotlight. Snap Support says a video Snap must be 5 seconds or longer, and the Post button appears only when you’re 16 or older and in a region where Spotlight posting is enabled. Checked against Snapchat Support: How do I post Snaps to Spotlight?
On a computer, you upload at profile.snapchat.com and tick Spotlight Snaps. A Spotlight post also goes to your Story by default, which you can turn off before submitting, and only accounts with a Public Profile get their display name shown on it. Snap’s support pages state no maximum length.

Every app here sets its own limits, so one file won’t always fit them all. A 4-minute vertical video, for example, is a regular video on YouTube rather than a Short and a reel Instagram won’t recommend to new audiences, yet sits within TikTok’s and Bluesky’s limits. Upload your own clean original to each app rather than a copy saved with another app’s watermark: Instagram says it shows reels less often when they carry borders, logos or watermarks.
