To schedule Instagram posts, open the Instagram app, create a post or Reel, tap More options, turn on Schedule this post and pick a date and time. It costs nothing. Instagram allows up to 30 days in advance and 25 posts a day, and only from a public account. On desktop, use Meta Business Suite.

Both numbers date from February 2026, when Instagram rewrote its help article, and the table below links each limit to the Meta page it comes from. If Instagram is one of several networks you post to, our guide on how to schedule social media posts lines up all nine.

Three ways to schedule an Instagram post

  1. The Instagram app (free). Photo posts, carousels and Reels, from a public account, on iPhone or Android.
  2. Meta Business Suite (free, desktop or mobile). Posts, Reels and Stories, for an Instagram account in a business portfolio.
  3. A scheduling tool. The tool publishes the post through Instagram’s API when it’s due. This is how you automate Instagram posts across several accounts or networks.

Can you schedule Instagram posts? (what changed in February 2026)

Yes. Any public Instagram account can schedule photo posts, carousels and Reels in the app, up to 30 days ahead and 25 posts a day. That wording is recent. Until late February 2026, Instagram’s help article said you needed a professional account and allowed 75 days ahead. That retired figure is the one most scheduling guides still quote.

Here is the change, with dates. Captures of Instagram’s article on scheduled posts and Reels in the Internet Archive show the old wording up to 20 February 2026: a professional account, 75 days ahead. From 28 February 2026 the article asks for a public account and a 30-day window. The live page still read that way when we last checked it, on 30 September 2026. The daily cap did not move: 25 posts a day before the change and after it.

What that means for you:

  • A personal account can schedule now, if it’s public. The old wording required a professional account. A private account still can’t use the in-app scheduler.
  • Any page that says 75 days is out of date. Plan within 30 days.
  • Privacy is locked in at scheduling time. Instagram says scheduled content keeps the privacy and audience settings you had when you scheduled it.
  • There’s no published minimum. Instagram’s article gives no shortest lead time, so we don’t give one either.

How to schedule a post on Instagram in the app

In the Instagram app, tap Create, choose Post or Reel, add your media and caption, then tap More options and turn on Schedule this post (or Schedule this reel). Pick a date and time, tap Done, go back and tap Schedule. That’s the whole process on iPhone and Android, for any public account, within Instagram’s 30-day window.

These are Instagram’s own steps, in its current menu wording:

  1. Tap Create in the top left (or swipe right anywhere in Feed), then tap Post or Reel.
  2. Select a photo or video, then tap Next.
  3. Add a caption, effects or filters.
  4. Tap More options.
  5. Turn on Schedule this post (or Schedule this reel), then choose a date and time.
  6. Tap Done, then tap Back.
  7. Tap Schedule.

If a guide you’re following mentions “Advanced settings”, look for More options instead. That’s the label in Instagram’s current article.

Write the caption before you open the scheduler. The free Instagram caption generator drafts one, and the Instagram hashtag generator suggests tags. Still deciding what to post? Start with our Instagram post ideas. For the time itself, see the best time to post on Instagram.

How to schedule Instagram posts from desktop

To post Instagram from desktop on a schedule, use Meta Business Suite, which is the desktop route Meta documents. Click Create post (or Create reel), pick your Instagram profile under Post to, add media and text, choose a date and time under Scheduling options and click Schedule. Instagram doesn’t document scheduling on instagram.com. Its help article has a computer view, but that view repeats the phone steps.

Meta’s desktop steps:

  1. Go to Meta Business Suite and pick the business portfolio.
  2. Click Create post or Create reel (on the home page or the Content tab).
  3. Under Post to, select your Instagram profile, and your Facebook Page too if you want both.
  4. Add media and text. You can customise the text separately for Facebook and Instagram.
  5. Under Scheduling options, choose the date and time.
  6. Click Schedule.

Business Suite has entry requirements the app doesn’t. The Instagram account must be in a business portfolio, and Meta’s help article on creating posts in Business Suite on desktop says you need full control of the account or Content permission for it. Business Suite also handles formats a little differently. That article caps a post going to Instagram at 10 photos, and Meta’s Reels help says you can’t create a reel from photos if you’re posting to Instagram, so the Reel has to start from a video.

Two numbers you might expect are missing. Meta states no scheduling window for Instagram content in Business Suite, and no daily cap. The 25-a-day limit belongs to the Instagram app, so don’t assume it carries over, and don’t assume a window either.

We could not verify scheduling on instagram.com. No Instagram page we found documents a browser scheduler, so Business Suite is the desktop method we can source.

Which Instagram posts can’t you schedule?

Instagram’s help article names four kinds of post you can’t schedule in the app: posts with product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers. Product tags draw on a catalog set up in Facebook Commerce Manager. It lists photo posts, carousels and Reels as schedulable. It doesn’t list Stories or trial reels, and it doesn’t say they’re blocked. For Stories, Meta Business Suite is the documented native route.

In the Instagram appFormats
Can schedulePhoto posts, carousel posts, Reels
Can’t schedulePosts with product tagging, collaborative posts, sponsored posts, fundraisers
Not stated either wayStories, trial reels

For the four blocked types, post live when you want them out, or schedule a version without the tag or collaborator. Stories have their own guide: can you schedule Instagram Stories covers the Business Suite steps and what Meta says about stickers.

How to find, edit or reschedule a scheduled Instagram post

Open your profile, tap the menu at the top right and choose Scheduled content under “Your insights and tools”. You can also get there through Create, then Post or Reel, then Scheduled. Tap any scheduled post and Instagram offers four options: Delete, Edit post, Reschedule or Share now. Share now publishes it immediately.

In Meta Business Suite, scheduled items sit under Content, then Posts & reels (or Stories), then Scheduled. The Planner in the left menu shows the same items on a week or month calendar. For posts and Reels, Business Suite offers Edit post, Reschedule post, Move to drafts and Delete post.

One thing to know before you mix methods. If a separate scheduling tool holds your post and publishes it at the chosen time, the post isn’t in Instagram’s Scheduled content list. Edit or cancel it in the tool instead.

How to automate Instagram posts with a scheduling tool

To automate Instagram posts, connect your account to a scheduling tool that publishes through Instagram’s API. You write the posts, set the times, and the tool publishes each one when it’s due, even if your phone is off. The catch: the publishing API accepts different image shapes, carousel lengths and Reel lengths than the app, so check your files against the API’s limits.

Third-party schedulers that auto-publish do it through Instagram’s API, not the app, and the two disagree on what they accept. A photo that posts fine by hand can be refused when a tool sends it. We keep the numbers in one place: shapes in our Instagram post size guide, durations in Instagram video length, and slide counts in our Instagram carousel explainer.

Account requirements are the other open question. Instagram’s public-account rule covers the in-app scheduler. It doesn’t tell you what a third-party tool needs; that depends on how the tool connects to Instagram. Check a tool’s connection screen before you plan a month around it.

Last, confirm the tool publishes the post rather than sending a reminder; our scheduling guide explains auto-publish versus reminder. Comparing options? Our roundup of Later alternatives covers the main schedulers.

Why didn’t my scheduled Instagram post publish?

Most failures trace back to one of Instagram’s own rules or to a broken tool connection. Check that the account is public, that you haven’t already scheduled 25 posts that day, and that the post has none of the features Instagram won’t schedule. If a tool set it up, make sure the tool is still connected. Work down the table in order.

If a tool refused an image when you scheduled it, the file probably fell outside the API’s limits rather than the app’s. The free Instagram image resizer fixes the shape in your browser.

Scheduling Instagram posts, carousels and Reels with Outfeed AI

Outfeed AI publishes Instagram feed posts through the same API described above: a single image, a single video (published as a Reel) or a carousel of 2 to 10 images and videos. Its answer to the API’s stricter image rules is conversion rather than rejection. Because Outfeed holds the post and publishes it itself, the post won’t appear in Instagram’s Scheduled content list.

The native schedulers above are free, and for Instagram alone they may be all you need. Outfeed is for when Instagram is one of several networks the same post has to reach. You could type something like: “Schedule these three photos as an Instagram carousel for Tuesday at 6 PM Toronto time, and post the same carousel to Threads.” Outfeed asks you to confirm before it schedules anything. Each network is then published as its own native post, with its own text if you wrote one. One limit to plan around: Facebook takes one media item per post in Outfeed, so a carousel can go to Instagram but not to a Facebook Page in the same post.

What its publishing code does on Instagram:

  • Connection: through Instagram’s own business login (the Instagram API with Instagram Login). It doesn’t go through a Facebook Page, so unlinking Facebook and Instagram doesn’t affect it.
  • Checks before scheduling: the caption is checked against 2,200 characters, and a single video is checked against Instagram’s API limits for Reels. Problems are reported when you schedule, not hours later.
  • Images: a PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF or TIFF, or a photo whose shape the API would refuse, is converted to a JPEG copy at publish time. The copy is padded with white, never cropped. HEIC files can’t be converted and are blocked. Alt text you add is sent with the image.

What it does not do on Instagram: Stories, first comments, user, product, location or collaborator tags, music, polls, Reel cover selection or text-only posts. It has no automatic queue or best-time slots either. You, or the assistant on your instruction, choose each time.

Frequently asked questions

Can you schedule Instagram posts for free?

Yes. Instagram’s own scheduler in the app is free: a public account can schedule photo posts, carousels and Reels up to 30 days ahead, up to 25 a day. Meta Business Suite, Meta’s own tool on desktop and mobile, also schedules Instagram posts, Reels and Stories at no cost for an account in a business portfolio.

How far in advance can you schedule Instagram posts?

Up to 30 days in the Instagram app, with a cap of 25 scheduled posts a day. Instagram’s help article changed in February 2026, and the 75-day window belonged to the old wording. Meta Business Suite states no window for Instagram content, and Instagram gives no minimum lead time.

Can personal Instagram accounts schedule posts?

Yes, if the account is public. Since February 2026 Instagram’s scheduling article says you need a public account, not a professional one, so a public personal account can schedule in the app and a private account can’t. Meta Business Suite has its own requirement: the account must be in a business portfolio.

Why won’t my scheduled Instagram post publish?

Check four things. The account must be public. You can’t have already scheduled 25 posts for that day. The post can’t be a product-tagged, collaborative or sponsored post, or a fundraiser, which Instagram won’t schedule. And if a scheduling tool set it up, the tool must still be connected to your account.

Do scheduled Instagram posts get less reach?

Instagram publishes no statement on whether scheduled posts reach more or fewer people than posts shared live, so treat claims either way as opinion. What you control is when the post goes out and what it says. Schedule it for when your own audience is most active.

Can I schedule Instagram posts from my computer?

Yes, through Meta Business Suite on desktop: create a post or Reel, choose your Instagram profile under Post to, set the date and time under Scheduling options, and click Schedule. Instagram doesn’t document scheduling on instagram.com in a browser; its help article’s computer view shows the phone steps.
