What Is a Carousel on Instagram? Specs, Uses, Tips

Title card reading What Is a Carousel on Instagram? Specs, Uses, Tips, from the Outfeed AI social media glossary, with a dictionary-style entry for carousel

A carousel on Instagram is a single feed post that holds up to 20 photos or videos, or a mix of both, that people swipe through sideways. It shows its first slide in the feed with a row of dots underneath, and the whole set shares one caption, one like count and one comment thread.

What is a carousel on Instagram actually good for? Anything meant to be read in order or browsed as a set. Most guides still quote old specs, so this page starts with the current ones (20 slides and 3:4 in the app, 10 slides and 4:5 through scheduling tools), then covers the slide-2 replay, photo dumps, reach data and when a carousel is the right call.

Elsewhere the word can mean a Meta carousel ad, a LinkedIn PDF post, a website slider or a fairground ride; those get a short section near the end.

What Is a Carousel on Instagram? Anatomy of a Swipe Post

A carousel behaves like one post that happens to have pages. Instagram’s Help Center describes it as a post with multiple photos or videos, “also known as a carousel,” and its help page on posts with multiple photos or videos sets the rules:

  • Up to 20 slides, photos and videos in any mix. Instagram launched carousels in February 2017 with a cap of 10 and doubled it in August 2024.
  • One shape for every slide. The orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to all of them.
  • One caption and one location, though you can tag people on individual slides.
  • One set of numbers. Likes and comments count for the whole post, not per slide.
  • One-way edits. After posting you can reorder or remove slides, but you can’t add new ones.

In practice the vocabulary is loose. People say carousel, carousel post, multi-photo post or just “slides,” and the word turns up mid-caption: “swipe for the before and after,” “slide 5 has the recipe,” or a comment like “the last slide got me.” Whatever the word, the idea is a post you read by swiping.

In the Instagram app, a carousel takes up to 20 photos or videos at up to 1080 × 1440 pixels; through Meta’s publishing API, which scheduling tools use, it is still 10 items and 4:5 at the tallest. Checked in September 2026 against Instagram’s guide to photo resolution and Meta’s media publishing reference:

SpecInstagram appMeta’s publishing API (scheduling tools)
Items per carouselUp to 20, photos and videos mixedUp to 10, photos and videos mixed
Tallest portrait3:4, 1080 × 1440 px4:5, 1080 × 1350 px
Square1:1, 1080 × 1080 px1:1
Widest landscape1.91:1, 1080 × 566 px1.91:1
Shape rulesOne orientation for every slide; unsupported shapes get croppedEvery image must fall between 4:5 and 1.91:1

Two rules follow:

  • Posting from the app? Use 1080 × 1440. Instagram has accepted 3:4 photos in single posts and carousels since May 2025, and 3:4 is also the shape of the profile-grid previews Instagram adopted when it made the grid rectangular in January 2025.
  • Scheduling? Build at 1080 × 1350. The API stops at 4:5, so a 3:4 file has to be cropped or padded before it can publish.

We hit both limits ourselves. Outfeed AI publishes Instagram carousels through that API, so it caps them at 10 items and pads anything taller than 4:5 with white rather than cropping it. Padding is the safer default for a single photo, but in a seamless panorama those strips land between slides, so build panoramas at 4:5 from the start.

The Second-Chance Replay: Why Slide 2 Needs a Hook

If someone scrolls past a carousel without swiping, Instagram may show it to them again later, opening on a different slide, usually the second. That is why a carousel sometimes appears in your feed already on slide 2.

Instagram hasn’t written this up in its Help Center. It is widely reported by social media teams, and you may have noticed it in your own feed, so treat it as a tendency rather than a rule. It still changes how you should build the first two slides:

  1. Make slide 2 a second cover. For some viewers it is the first thing they see, so it needs a headline or an image that works without slide 1.
  2. Put the promise on slide 1 and the proof on slide 2. Slide 1: “5 mistakes that flatten your sourdough.” Slide 2: “Mistake 1: your starter isn’t ready. Here’s the float test.” Either one works as an opener.
  3. Don’t spend slide 2 on “keep swiping.” A contents page or a “continued” card is dead air to someone who lands there cold.
  4. In a panorama, give slide 2 its own subject, so a replay that opens mid-image still looks framed on purpose.

Do Carousels Get More Reach Than Reels?

Slightly, going by the latest benchmark data, but not by enough to choose a format on reach alone. Socialinsider’s carousel analysis, published in January 2026, reports:

  • Reach rate: carousels 3.32%, single images 3.30%, Reels 3.15%
  • Engagement rate: carousels 0.55%, Reels 0.52%, single images 0.37%
  • Length: carousels with more than 10 slides got more reach

The gaps are small, so let the job pick the format. And if longer carousels do travel further, slides 11 to 20 are only available when you post from the app, because the API stops at 10.

A carousel usually wins when the content is a sequence or a set: the steps of a tutorial, a before and after, a checklist people will save, the details of a product, a trip or event recap. A reel wins when you need people who don’t follow you yet, or when the idea only works in motion or rides a trending sound; here is what a Reel is and how it differs from a Story.

One 2026 caution: since 30 April 2026, accounts that mainly post unoriginal content lose recommendation eligibility for photos and carousels as well as reels, according to Instagram’s originality update. A feed of reposted meme carousels is now a real risk.

A photo dump is a kind of carousel; a reel is a different format entirely.

The photo dump meaning is simple: a carousel of casual, lightly edited photos and clips from a stretch of time (a week, a trip, a month) posted together to capture a mood rather than one perfect moment. Who coined the phrase is unclear, but Instagram used it itself in August 2024, announcing, as PetaPixel reported, that you could now add up to 20 pics or videos “to a photo dump.”

Video can sit inside either of the first two, but a video in a carousel isn’t a reel: Meta’s API documentation notes that reels can’t appear in carousels. Posting a dump? Our list of photo dump captions sorts one-line captions by the kind of dump.

In the app it takes a minute:

  1. Tap +, choose Post, and select multiple photos or videos, up to 20, in the order you want them.
  2. Pick one shape and drag each photo to adjust its crop; the shape applies to every slide.
  3. Apply one filter to everything, or tap a slide to edit it on its own.
  4. Write one caption, add a location, tag people on individual slides, and add a song if you like.
  5. Share. You can reorder or remove slides later, but not add new ones.

Seamless Panorama Carousels

A seamless carousel is one wide image cut into slides that line up as people swipe. Make the canvas as many 1080-pixel slides wide as you want, at the height of your target shape:

  • Posting from the app (3:4 slides): 1440 px tall, so four slides means 4320 × 1440 px.
  • Scheduling (4:5 slides): 1350 px tall, so four slides means 4320 × 1350 px.

Next step: run the image through our free Instagram carousel splitter. It cuts one image into 2 to 10 equal slides at 1080 px wide, keeps your proportions for the height, and numbers the files in upload order. It runs in your browser, so the image never leaves your device, and there is no sign-up.

Keep faces and text away from the seams, and give slide 2 its own subject for the replay.

Scheduling rather than posting live? Outfeed AI publishes Instagram carousels (up to Meta’s 10-item limit) and Threads carousels (up to 20) from one chat message, such as “post this carousel to Instagram and Threads on Thursday at 6pm,” and shows a preview for each platform before it goes out.

Carousels Beyond Instagram: Threads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook

Most platforms have a swipeable multi-image post; they just call it something else.

PlatformWhat it’s calledHow it works
ThreadsCarouselSwipe sideways; 2 to 20 photos or videos per post, per Meta’s Threads API documentation
TikTokPhoto post (photo mode)Swipe through photos, usually set to a sound
LinkedInDocument postUpload a PDF and each page shows as a slide readers click or swipe through
FacebookMulti-photo post, or carousel adOrganic multi-photo posts usually show as a photo grid; carousel ads are paid, with a link on each card

On LinkedIn, “carousel” almost always means a document post. On Facebook it usually means the ad format, which Meta also runs on Instagram.

Before social media borrowed it, a carousel was a fairground ride, and the carousel meaning most dictionaries still lead with is physical. Cambridge Dictionary’s older senses:

  • A merry-go-round: the fairground ride that turns in a circle, with animals or vehicles to sit on
  • A baggage carousel: the moving belt at an airport where you collect your bags
  • A slide-projector tray: a brand name for a rotating holder of photographic slides

Online it also means a website carousel, the rotating banner or image slider on a web page, and a carousel ad, Meta’s paid format of swipeable cards. The word itself is old: Dictionary.com dates it to 1640–50, from a French word for a kind of tournament, which came from Italian carosello.

  • Reel: Instagram’s short vertical video, built for reach.
  • Forward: in Story insights, a tap to skip ahead to the next frame, roughly the Story version of swiping to the next slide. Here is what Forward means in Instagram Story insights.
  • Profile grid: the tiled view of your posts on your profile, shown as tall 3:4 previews since 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a carousel post?

A carousel post is one post that holds several photos or videos which people swipe through sideways. On Instagram it can hold up to 20 items, and they share one caption, one like count and one comment thread. Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn have their own versions: carousels, photo posts and PDF document posts.

Up to 20 photos or videos when you post from the Instagram app, double the old limit of 10. Tools that publish through Meta’s API can still post only 10. Every slide shares one shape, and 1080 × 1440 pixels (3:4) is the tallest Instagram keeps without cropping.

Yes. Instagram added music to photo carousels in 2023, and you can mix photos and videos in the same carousel. As with reels, some business accounts can’t use Instagram’s licensed music library, because that library is meant for personal, non-commercial use.

Partly. After you share a carousel you can reorder the slides, remove slides, and edit the caption, location and tags. You can’t add new photos or videos to it, so adding slides means deleting the post and publishing it again.

Instagram can show a carousel again to someone who scrolled past it without swiping, opening on a later slide, usually the second. Instagram hasn’t documented this in its Help Center, so treat it as a tendency rather than a rule, and design slide 2 to work as a second cover.

What does photo dump mean?

A photo dump is a carousel of casual, lightly edited photos and clips from a stretch of time, such as a week, a trip or a month, posted together to capture a mood rather than one perfect moment. Who coined it is unclear, but Instagram itself used the phrase in 2024 when it raised carousels to 20 slides.
