On the Instagram map, Instagram friends means followers you follow back, and they’re the only accounts you can share your location with. Sharing is off by default. If you turn it on, your location updates only when you open or return to Instagram, and it disappears if you haven’t opened the app within 24 hours.

One point is easy to miss: a location-tagged post can show on the map even if you don’t share (see why). If you do share, keep it to friends you know IRL: where you are is exactly the kind of personal detail doxxing exposes. The map is one corner of the app; our guide to everyday Instagram tasks covers the others.

Who counts as Instagram friends on the map?

Followers you follow back. That’s how Meta defined friends when it launched the map on 6 August 2025: you choose to share with “friends (followers you follow back), Close Friends, Only selected friends, or no one.” A follower you don’t follow back doesn’t count.

A Friends view Meta described for a test in India in September 2025 used the same idea: recommended posts and reels “from accounts you follow who also follow you back.” Neither post says the Reels Friends tab follows this rule. Accounts that follow each other are often called mutuals, and Instagram Close Friends is a separate list you build yourself.

What is the Instagram map, and where is it available?

A map in your messages (Map, at the top of your inbox) showing friends who share their last active location, plus location-tagged content. Meta launched it in the US on 6 August 2025, and the August post promised “more global availability soon”; Meta gives no full country list. Meta’s 6 October 2025 post on the India rollout lists changes made since launch: a persistent indicator at the top of the map showing whether you’re sharing, an indicator under your profile photo in the Notes tray, profile photos removed from location-tagged content, and a preview of how tagged content will look on the map. The post doesn’t say which other countries have these changes. Checked against Meta Newsroom: Now In India, Instagram rolls out Map feature to help people connect with friends (6 October 2025)

You don’t have to share to use it: you can view the map, swipe up at the bottom to see everyone sharing with you, and tap someone’s location to send them a message or a like.

Who can see your location on the Instagram map?

No one, until you turn sharing on and pick an audience from accounts that follow you back. Instagram’s rules:

  • Audience. Friends, Close Friends, only selected friends, or no one.
  • Updates. Only when you open or return to Instagram, not continuously.
  • Expiry. It disappears if you haven’t opened or returned to the app within 24 hours.
  • The Settings icon. A blue arrow means you’re sharing, a red dot means you’re not, and an orange triangle means you need to allow location on your device.
  • Your phone’s setting is separate. Location services must be on to share. Turning off map sharing can leave location services on for Instagram.

Your shared location doesn’t stay on the map alone. Instagram says it can also appear in other places, like notes and chats with the people you share it with. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Share your location with others on the Instagram map (iPhone version)

Can you hide your location from some people or places?

Keep sharing, but switch it off for specific accounts, or set up to 3 hidden places where no one sees you on the map. Both sit under Options in the map’s Settings.

In the Instagram app: add or manage hidden places:

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom.
  2. Tap Map at the top of your inbox.
  3. Tap Settings in the top right.
  4. Tap Options in the top right, then tap Hide places. From here you can add a hidden place (tap Add in the top right, drag the pin to set the location, decide how large an area to hide, tap Next, enter a name and tap Done) or tap an existing hidden place to update or delete it.

  2. Tap Map at the top of your inbox.
  3. Tap Settings in the top right.

What happens when someone requests your location?

If you decline, they aren’t told. Requests come from people who already share their location with you, sent from the map’s People list. Instagram’s wording: “People that’ve asked to see your location won’t be notified when you decline their request.” Checked against Instagram Help Center: About sharing your location with others on the Instagram map

It works the other way too. A request you’ve sent can be cancelled at any time before it’s accepted, and if someone shares with you but you don’t share with them, Share back is the option that starts sharing. Why can your posts show on the map when sharing is off?

Because a location tag is separate from location sharing. Meta says content with a location tag (reels, posts and stories from people you follow, and notes from people you mutually follow) can show on the map for 24 hours, whether or not you share your location. Checked against Meta Newsroom: New Instagram Features to Help You Connect (6 August 2025)

You add a tag while creating a post, with Add location. People who tap it see your post and others at that location on the Instagram map, and who can see content tagged at a location depends on your profile’s privacy setting. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Add a location before sharing your post on Instagram To add, change or remove one, see how to add a location on Instagram.

How does parental supervision work on the map?

Teens can only share their location with adults they follow or with other teens. Checked against Instagram Help Center: About sharing your location with others on the Instagram map Parents using supervision are notified if their teen starts sharing, and Meta says a parent can “decide whether your teen has access to location sharing on the map and see who your teen is sharing their location with.” Checked against Meta Newsroom: New Instagram Features to Help You Connect (6 August 2025)

What is the Friends tab in Reels?

A separate feature with a similar name, announced the same day as the map. Meta described it as a tab “where you can see public content your friends have interacted with, or recommendations from Blends you’ve started”, reached at launch by tapping “Friends” at the top of Reels. Checked against Meta Newsroom: New Instagram Features to Help You Connect (6 August 2025, Friends tab) It also said it was rolling out controls for what’s shown there, including hiding your own likes and comments on reels. Neither that post nor a Help Center article gives a menu path for them. Hiding like counts on your own posts is separate: see how to hide likes on Instagram.

Instagram friends and the map: FAQ

How do I turn off location sharing on the Instagram map?

Tap Messages at the bottom, tap Map at the top of your inbox, then tap Settings in the top right. Choose not to share your location with anyone, and tap Share Location at the bottom to save. The map setting is separate from your phone’s location setting for Instagram, so turning off map sharing can leave location services on for Instagram.

Who can see my location on the Instagram map?

No one unless you turn sharing on, because it’s off by default. You can only share with accounts that follow you back, and you choose friends (followers you follow back), Close Friends, only selected friends or no one. You can also hide your location from specific accounts and set up to 3 hidden places where no one sees you on the map.

Does the Instagram map share my live location all the time?

No. If you share, your location updates when you open or return to Instagram, so people see your last active location. It disappears if you haven’t opened or returned to the app within 24 hours. Location services must be on for sharing to work at all.

What are friends on Instagram?

For the map, Meta defines friends as followers you follow back. A Friends view Meta described for a test in India in September 2025 used the same idea, and Meta hasn’t said outright that the Reels Friends tab does. Close Friends is a separate list you build yourself.

Can my posts show on the Instagram map if I don’t share my location?

Yes. Meta says content with a location tag, such as reels, posts and stories from people you follow and notes from people you mutually follow, can show on the map for 24 hours whether or not you share your location. Who can see and interact with content you’ve tagged at a location depends on your profile’s privacy setting.
