Why can’t I add a location on Instagram?

If no places appear at all, Instagram says to make sure location is turned on for the Instagram app in your phone’s settings. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Why there are no options when you try to add a location to your Instagram post If that isn’t it, work down this list:

  1. The place isn’t offered. Only existing locations can be tagged, so a place missing from the suggestions and search can’t be added.
  2. No Location sticker in Stories. Update the app. Instagram says not all stickers are available to everyone, and its stickers article says stickers may be unavailable in Japan and in countries in Europe.
  3. No business contact options. Business information can only be edited from a professional account.
  4. The post is already live. You don’t need to repost: add the location with Edit, as shown above.

Can you create a new location on Instagram?

No. Instagram’s Help Center says: “Only existing locations offered can be tagged in posts you share on Instagram. New locations can’t be created.” Instagram documents no way around that. The alternative it does document is for businesses: a business profile can add its address to its profile instead, as in the business address section. Who can see the location you tag?

It depends on your account’s privacy. Instagram says who can see and interact with content tagged at a location depends on your profile privacy setting. People who tap the location see your post and others at that location on the Instagram map, and anyone who can see your story can tap its Location sticker. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Add a location before sharing your post on Instagram

Meta’s announcement of the map (launched in the US in August 2025; Meta gives no full country list) adds a time window: location-tagged reels, posts and stories from people you follow can show on the map for 24 hours, whether or not you share your location. Tagging a place is not the same as sharing where you are. Sharing your location on the map is a separate setting: Instagram says it’s off by default and works only with accounts that follow you back. Checked against Instagram Help Center: About sharing your location with others on the Instagram map Our guide to the Instagram friends map covers that setting. To take a tag off a post, use Edit and Remove Location (Remove on Android), as above. If a tagged post draws comments you’d rather not deal with, our guide to IG comments covers hiding and filtering them.
