What does IRL stand for? In real life. Dictionary.com spells out the contrast built into it: in real life, as opposed to communication and interaction online or in a fictional situation. Checked against Dictionary.com

Below: what four dictionaries say, how the abbreviation works in a sentence, Twitch’s IRL category and the unrelated meanings of the same three letters. The one-line version sits in our social media glossary.

What Does IRL Stand For? In Real Life

Every dictionary we checked expands IRL the same way: “in real life.” They differ only in how much context they add.

  • Merriam-Webster lists IRL as an abbreviation for “in real life.” Checked against Merriam-Webster Dictionary
  • Cambridge Dictionary calls it an abbreviation for “in real life,” used in email, on social media and so on. Checked against Cambridge Dictionary
  • Dictionary.com adds the contrast with online or fictional interaction, and gives its origin only as its use in digital communications. Checked against Dictionary.com
  • Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries defines it simply as “in real life.” Checked against Oxford Learner's Dictionaries

None of them gives a first-use date, so a confident year quoted elsewhere isn’t backed by these dictionaries.

How IRL Is Used: Online vs Offline

IRL marks the offline side of a contrast: what happens away from the screen, as opposed to online or in a story. Here’s how that looks in examples we wrote:

  • Meeting someone: “We’ve been mutuals for years and finally met IRL.”
  • Comparing someone online and off: “She’s even funnier IRL than in her videos.”
  • Names: “My IRL name is on LinkedIn; everywhere else I go by my handle.”
  • Fiction vs reality: “Nobody talks like that IRL. Only in movies.”

It means the same on TikTok, Instagram or X as in a text message: Cambridge Dictionary places the abbreviation in email and on social media. Checked against Cambridge Dictionary

Put side by side, the contrast looks like this (pairs we wrote):

OnlineIRL
Chatting in DMsMeeting for coffee
Your handleYour IRL name
See you in the commentsSee you IRL: see you in person
A watch party in a group chatA screening you go to together

What Does IRL Mean on Twitch?

On Twitch, IRL is also a content category for streams that aren’t about playing a game. Twitch launched the IRL category on 15 December 2016 so streamers could talk to their community and share their thoughts, opinions and everyday life, live or recorded, even when they weren’t playing a game. So an IRL stream, in Twitch’s sense, is built around talking with the community and everyday life rather than around a game.

Other Meanings of IRL

Outside chat, IRL can stand for things that have nothing to do with real life:

  • Indy Racing League, listed by Merriam-Webster alongside “in real life.”
  • Ireland, as the country’s international car registration code, in the Collins English Dictionary text.

Checked against Dictionary.com (Collins English Dictionary text, British section) and Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

IRL belongs to a small family of words about the line between online and offline life.

  • Touch grass: Merriam-Webster defines it as to take part in normal activities in the real world, especially as opposed to online experiences and interactions, and gives a first known use of 2016. Full entry: what touch grass means. Checked against Merriam-Webster Dictionary: touch grass
  • Chronically online: Know Your Meme, a community-edited site, describes it as slang for someone who spends so much time on the internet, often more than offline, that they become out of touch with the real world. More in what chronically online means. Checked against Know Your Meme: Chronically OnlineCommunity-documented
  • AFK: a neighbor, not a synonym. Cambridge Dictionary defines afk as a written abbreviation for “away from keyboard,” used when you stop taking part in a chat-room discussion for a short time. Checked against Cambridge Dictionary

Using IRL in Brand Posts

“See you IRL” fits a casual caption about a meetup or a pop-up; in an email or a LinkedIn post, “in person” says the same thing more plainly.

If one announcement goes out on several networks, each can get its own wording: “Come say hi IRL on Saturday” for Instagram, “Join us in person on Saturday” for LinkedIn.
