How to Repost on TikTok (and Undo a Repost)

The short answer to “how do you repost on TikTok?” is two taps: Share, then Repost. You can also press and hold the video and tap Repost. Either way it goes out the moment you tap, to your friends and community in their For You feed, labelled as a repost with your profile photo and nickname.

Everything below comes from TikTok’s own pages; its Help Center describes reposting in the TikTok app. Unlike Duet and Stitch, a repost shares the original post rather than a video you record yourself; the rest of the app is mapped in our guide to every TikTok feature.

How do you repost on TikTok?

Open the video in the TikTok app and use one of the three routes TikTok lists: the Share button, a press and hold on the video, or, if a friend has already reposted it, their profile photo at the bottom of the video. Each one ends with a tap on Repost.

In the app:

  1. In the TikTok app, go to the content you'd like to repost.
  2. From here, you can: tap the Share button, then tap Repost; press and hold on the video, then tap Repost; or, if your friend(s) reposted the content, tap their profile photo at the bottom, then tap Repost.

TikTok’s own note is that once you tap Repost, the content is reposted. You can find it later on your profile, under the repost tab. Checked against TikTok Help Center: What is repost on TikTok?

What does repost mean on TikTok?

A repost shares someone’s post with your friends and community in their For You feed, labelled as a repost with your profile photo and nickname. Checked against TikTok Help Center: Repost You share the creator’s post itself; the label shows viewers who passed it along. Otherwise TikTok says a repost looks the same as any other post in the For You feed. Checked against TikTok Help Center: What is repost on TikTok?

If the For You feed is new to you, our FYP meaning guide explains how that feed works. Instagram has a Repost button too, with its own rules, covered in what repost means on Instagram.

Where do reposts show and who can see them?

It depends on your account. On a public account, your reposts are visible to others on your profile, under the repost tab. On a private account, only your followers can see your reposts, both on your profile and in their For You feed. Checked against TikTok Help Center: What is repost on TikTok?

Public accountPrivate account

On your profileYour reposted content, repost text and repost replies are visible to othersOnly your followers see your reposted content

Anyone who can see a repost can reply to it, and TikTok notes that your comment privacy settings don’t apply to repost replies. So a limit you’ve set on who can comment on your own videos won’t cover replies to what you repost. Checked against TikTok Help Center: Repost

Want only followers to see your reposts? The route TikTok documents is a private account, and it changes far more than reposts. You approve who can follow you and watch your videos, LIVEs, bio, likes and follow lists, and people can’t Duet, Stitch, create stickers with, download or add your posts to their Stories. TikTok lists the private option as a feature of General TikTok Accounts; Business Accounts are public profiles. It publishes these steps for the app only:

In the app:

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top.
  3. Tap Settings and privacy, then tap Privacy.
  4. Turn Private account on or off.

How do you turn on repost on TikTok?

TikTok’s Help Center documents no setting that turns Repost on or off. It describes Repost only as an action in the Share menu or the press-and-hold menu, which are the steps above. Checked against TikTok Help Center: RepostNot verified

The same goes for letting other people repost your videos. TikTok’s repost and privacy articles document no “who can repost” control. The Reuse of content setting, which decides who can Duet or Stitch your videos, covers Duet, Stitch, stickers and adding your posts to Stories, and doesn’t mention reposts. What you can control is who sees each post in the first place. On a public account, a post can be set to Everyone, Friends or Only you, before you post or later. Checked against TikTok Help Center: Post privacy settings

How do you undo a repost on TikTok?

Go back to the video you reposted and remove it: tap Share, then Delete repost; press and hold the video, then Remove repost; or tap your profile photo at the bottom of the video, then Remove. Your reposts are on your profile under the repost tab if you need to find one.

In the app:

  1. In the TikTok app, go to the content you reposted.
  2. From here, you can: tap the Share button, then tap Delete repost; press and hold on the video, then tap Remove repost; or tap your profile photo at the bottom, then tap Remove.

Checked against TikTok Help Center: Repost.

Check the replies before you remove a repost that started a conversation: TikTok says that after you remove a repost, all related replies are deleted too.

Can you reply to someone’s repost?

Yes. When a friend has reposted a video, tap their profile photo at the bottom of it, tap Reply, then write and send your reply.

In the app:

  1. In the TikTok app, go to the reposted content.
  2. Tap your friend(s) profile photo at the bottom.
  3. Tap Reply.
  4. Enter your reply, then tap the Send button.

Checked against TikTok Help Center: Repost.

Replies to a repost sit outside comment settings: TikTok says your comment privacy settings don’t apply to repost replies. They also depend on the repost itself, so if your friend removes it, the replies are deleted with it.

On your own repost, you can delete a reply you don’t want without removing the whole repost:

In the app:

  1. In the TikTok app, go to the content you reposted.
  2. Tap your profile photo at the bottom.
  3. Press and hold on a reply to your repost, then tap Delete.

Repost, Duet or Stitch: which should you use?

Repost when you want to pass a video on unchanged; Duet or Stitch when you want to add a video of your own. A repost shares the post itself. A Duet plays your video beside the original in a split screen, both at the same time, and a Stitch uses a part of the original as part of your own video.

What none of the three involves is downloading someone’s video and posting it again as your own. TikTok’s originality policy treats copied content as unoriginal, and unoriginal content may be removed from the For You feed. TikTok repost FAQ

Can you stop people from reposting your TikTok videos?

TikTok’s repost and privacy articles document no setting that stops people reposting your public videos. Its Reuse of content setting covers Duet, Stitch, stickers and adding your posts to Stories, not reposts. What you can control is who sees a post at all: on a public account, each post can be set to Everyone, Friends or Only you.

Does reposting on TikTok credit the creator?

A repost shares the creator’s own post with your friends and community, labelled as a repost with your profile photo and nickname. TikTok’s repost article doesn’t say whether the creator is notified. To credit a video in a post of your own, TikTok lets you credit up to 3 videos from the Post screen, and their creators are notified. Checked against TikTok Help Center: Credit a video

Can you repost on TikTok with a private account?

Yes. TikTok says that if your account is private, only your followers can see your reposted content, both on your profile and in their For You feed. On a public account, your reposted content, repost text and repost replies are visible to others on your profile.

Can you add a note or text to a TikTok repost?

TikTok’s repost article mentions repost text, which on a public account is visible to others on your profile along with your reposts and repost replies. It gives no steps for adding text or a note. Anyone who can see your repost can reply to it, and your comment privacy settings don’t apply to those replies.

When did TikTok add the Repost button?

No dated announcement of the Repost button turned up in a search of TikTok’s Newsroom, so no launch date is given here. Checked against TikTok Newsroom (searched)Not verified TikTok’s Help Center explains how Repost works today, and that is what the steps on this page follow.
