FYP Meaning: The For You Page on TikTok and Other Apps
FYP stands for For You Page: TikTok’s main feed of recommended videos, chosen for each viewer by TikTok’s recommendation system rather than by the accounts they follow. It’s the screen the app opens on. TikTok’s own name for it is the For You feed; “page” is what users say.
The FYP meaning has held since at least 2018; what keeps changing is the feed behind it. TikTok’s recommender still ranks each video one viewer at a time, and in the US a new company has operated it since January 2026.

FYP Meaning in Texts, Comments and Captions
In a text, a comment or a caption, FYP almost always means the writer’s own TikTok For You Page. Dictionary.com’s entry for FYP gives the same sense, with the example “My fyp was loaded with cat videos today.” It says people have called the feed the For You page, and shortened that to FYP, “since at least 2018”, and that the term “became far more widespread when TikTok exploded in popularity around summer 2019”. It names no first use, so be wary of any exact origin story.
- Comment: “how did this end up on my fyp”. The viewer doesn’t follow the account; TikTok recommended the video.
- Text or DM: “saw this on my fyp and thought of you”, sent with a link.
- Caption: “fyp, do your thing”, a creator talking to the algorithm, half as a joke.
- Hashtags: #fyp, #foryou and #foryoupage at the end of a caption.
People now say “my fyp” about Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts too, although neither app has a feed by that name.
How Does a Video Land on Someone’s FYP?
A video doesn’t land on “the” FYP. TikTok ranks it separately for each viewer, so it appears in one person’s feed at a time. In TikTok’s explanation of how it recommends videos, published in June 2020, videos are “ranked to determine the likelihood of a user’s interest in a piece of content, and delivered to each unique For You feed”. The explainer sorts what the system weighs into three groups:
- User interactions: “the videos you like or share, accounts you follow, comments you post, and content you create”.
- Video information: “details like captions, sounds, and hashtags”.
- Device and account settings: “your language preference, country setting, and device type”.
It also says “neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors in the recommendation system”, so a small account isn’t shut out by size alone.
There’s a gate, too. TikTok’s Community Guidelines shorten For You feed to FYF and set out “FYF Ineligible” standards: content that meets them stays up but “won’t be recommended in the FYF”. One category is “reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits.”
What about typing #fyp? Hashtags sit in the video-information group, and nothing TikTok has published says a tag can request distribution; with posts reportedly capped at five hashtags since August 2025, #fyp also takes a slot that could name the video’s topic. FYP vs Following: What Each Tab Shows
For You shows videos TikTok’s recommender picks from across the app; Following shows videos from accounts you follow. TikTok opens on For You.
- For You: ranked for you alone, so two people who follow the same accounts can see different feeds. TikTok says it “generally won’t show two videos in a row made with the same sound or by the same creator.”
- Following: only the accounts you chose.
- Local: in the US, the joint venture that now runs TikTok there announced a Local feed on 12 February 2026.

What Changed for TikTok’s US For You Feed in 2026
In the US, the company running the For You feed changed. TikTok’s US operations moved to TikTok USDS Joint Venture when the divestiture deal closed on 22 January 2026.
The White House fact sheet on the deal, dated 25 September 2025, says the divestiture “puts the operation of the algorithm, code, and content moderation decisions under the control of the new joint venture”. It “requires all recommendation models, including algorithms, that use U.S. user data to be retrained and monitored by America’s trusted security partners”, and names Oracle as TikTok’s “security provider”.
What that means if you post in the US:
- The joint venture’s name is on creator paperwork. TikTok’s US Creator Rewards Program terms, updated 20 July 2026, set rewards “in TikTok USDS Joint Venture’s sole discretion”.
- There’s no public before-and-after. We found no published timeline for the retraining and no data on how the feed changed (checked 25 September 2026). “The new algorithm” is a guess, not a diagnosis.
- Outages happen. Days after the handover, the joint venture posted a notice headed “Technical issues impacting TikTok’s U.S. service” (27 January 2026).

Does Instagram Have an FYP? For You Feeds on Seven Apps
Not by that name. Instagram’s nearest equivalents are the Reels tab and Explore. X and Threads have tabs literally called For you, YouTube has the Shorts feed, and Bluesky’s version is Discover.

X, Threads and Facebook describe feeds that start from accounts you follow and blend in recommendations; on Bluesky, Discover is one of many custom feeds users can pin. The practical upshot: one clip posted to TikTok, Reels and Shorts is judged by three different recommenders, and the caption and tags that suit one may not suit the others. From a university student, FYP usually means final year project, the major project in the last year of a degree, a usage common in the UK and Asia. Wikipedia’s FYP disambiguation page adds five-year plan, foundation year program and F.Y.P, an American punk band.
