TikTok SEO: What TikTok Says Decides Search Results
Getting found in TikTok search starts with one line in TikTok’s Help Center: for most users, content information, including how well a post matches the term entered, generally outweighs other signals. That’s TikTok SEO in a sentence, and it differs from the For You feed, where interactions such as watch time generally weigh most. For brands paying creators, how creator posts surface in search and why paid links need rel=sponsored are covered in influencer SEO.

What is TikTok SEO?
TikTok SEO is making a post easy for TikTok’s search to match with what people type. It’s about TikTok’s own search bar, not Google, and it works on what TikTok calls content information: how well a post matches the term entered, its hashtags and the sound used.
Google is separate: TikTok says that on a public account, depending on your privacy settings, your content “may appear in search engines.” It says nothing about how posts rank there. Checked against TikTok Help Center: Private and public accounts
How does TikTok search rank videos?
TikTok groups the signals behind search results and suggested terms into three: your own past searches and interactions, content information (how well a post matches the term entered, its hashtags and the sound used), and your device, language and location settings. It weights them like this: “For most users, content information, which may include how well the content matches the specific term entered, is generally weighted more heavily than others.” Checked against TikTok Help Center: How TikTok recommends content
Two of the three describe the searcher, so content information is the lever you hold. Make each post plainly about one topic, in the words someone would type to find it.
TikTok search vs For You: why they reward different things
Because TikTok weights them differently: content information generally weighs most in search, and interactions such as watch time in For You.
| What TikTok says | TikTok search | For You feed |
|---|---|---|
| Generally weighs most | Content information, such as how well a post matches the term entered | Interactions, such as time spent watching |
| Content signals it names | Hashtags, the sound used | Sounds, hashtags, views, country of posting |
| Signals about the viewer | Past searches and interactions; device, language and location settings | What they like, share, comment on, watch in full or skip; device, language, location, time zone |

So a post can match a search well and still get little For You reach, or the reverse. In short: write for search, edit for watch time. Our creator strategies guide covers the watch-time side, and how to get more views on TikTok covers For You reach.
Where does TikTok read your words?
Beyond the caption, a post can carry its topic in hashtags, the sound, on-screen text, auto-generated captions, photo alt text and the cover. TikTok’s search explanation names hashtags and the sound; the rest come from its editing, posting and accessibility help:
| Place | What TikTok documents |
|---|---|
| Caption | Up to 2,200 characters for a video caption through TikTok’s Content Posting API. Writing tips: TikTok captions |
| Hashtags | Content information for search. Choosing them: best hashtags for TikTok |
| Sound | Content information for search |
| On-screen text | Added with Text on the editing screen; drag its arrows on the track to set when it shows |
| Auto-generated captions | Created for uploaded videos in the language you choose; you can edit or remove them |
| Photo alt text | Up to 300 characters per photo, before or after posting |
| Cover | The thumbnail shown on your profile and in search, chosen with Select cover before posting |

The cover is what searchers see in results, so choose a frame that makes the topic obvious. YouTube’s equivalent of the cover is a custom thumbnail; see YouTube thumbnail best practices.
Is there a TikTok SEO tool? How to use Creator Search Insights
Yes: TikTok’s own Creator Search Insights shows the topics people search for. Its Content gap filter flags under-served searches, and accounts with more than 1,000 followers also get a Searches by followers filter. To open it:
In the app:
- In the TikTok app, tap the Search button at the top.
- Search "Creator Search Insights" and tap View at the top of the search results.
Checked against TikTok Help Center: Creator Search Insights.
TikTok warns that some topics are AI-generated and that it “cannot guarantee the accuracy” of them, so search a topic yourself before building a video on it. The tool’s Analytics tab shows how your posts perform in search, split into All posts and Inspired posts. TikTok’s Creator Academy lists the countries where it’s available in English, including the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. For trends and top ads instead, see our TikTok Creative Center guide.
How do you check your SEO on TikTok?
Search your target term in the app, see where your post lands, then read the search data in your analytics. TikTok’s search steps:
In the app:
- In the TikTok app, tap the Search button at the top.
- Enter what you're looking for in the search bar, then tap Search. Keep in mind that the most relevant search results appear in the Top tab.
- To refine your search, tap the More options … button at the top, then tap Filters to sort through your search results. Tap Apply after you select the filters.
Checked against TikTok Help Center: Discover and search.
Results reflect the searcher’s own history, device, language and location, so a self-search is a rough check, not a ranking. For firmer evidence, TikTok’s Creator Academy says the analytics Overview shows your Traffic source and the Search queries that led viewers to your content:
In the app:
- Go to your profile, tap the menu bars, select TikTok Studio, find Analytics and click View all.
On a computer:
- In TikTok Studio on the web, head to the Analytics tab on the left side of your screen.
Checked against TikTok Creator Academy: Understanding your analytics.
Allow for the lag: analytics can take 1 to 2 days to update, exist only for videos posted after you turn analytics on, and show everything except follower activity in UTC. Checked against TikTok Help Center: My videos aren't getting views
What can keep your videos out of TikTok search?
Repeatedly posting content that’s unsuitable for the For You feed. TikTok says your account and posts then won’t appear in For You and will be harder to find in search. You’re notified in your inbox and on your profile, and you can appeal from either:
In the app: From your inbox:
- In the TikTok app, tap Inbox at the bottom.
- Tap the notification that your account is ineligible for recommendation.
- Tap View more.
- Review the ineligible videos, then tap Appeal at the top.
In the app: From your profile:
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the Ineligible for recommendation notice below your username.
- Review the ineligible videos, then tap Appeal at the top.
Checked against TikTok Help Center: Why is my account not being recommended?.
One opt-out is yours to make: depending on your location, TikTok lets you stop a post from appearing in its screenshot visual search when you create it. Visual search itself is only for logged-in users aged 18 and over. Checked against TikTok Help Center: Discover and search

TikTok SEO FAQ
What are TikTok’s search ranking factors?
TikTok says search results and suggested terms are influenced by your past searches and interactions, content information (how well a post matches the term entered, its hashtags and the sound used) and your device, language and location settings. For most users, content information is generally weighted more heavily than the others.
Do hashtags still matter for TikTok SEO?
Yes. TikTok names hashtags as part of content information, which it says generally weighs most in search results for most users, alongside how well a post matches the term entered and the sound used. Hashtags are content information in the For You feed too, but there interactions such as watch time generally weigh more.
How do you find keywords for TikTok?
Use Creator Search Insights, TikTok’s own tool. In the TikTok app, tap the Search button, search for ‘Creator Search Insights’ and tap View at the top of the results. It shows topics people search for, with a Content gap filter for under-served searches and, once you have more than 1,000 followers, a Searches by followers filter.
Do TikTok videos show up on Google?
They can. TikTok says that with a public account, depending on your privacy settings, your content may appear in search engines, blogs, social media posts and news sites. Its Help Center describes no separate setting for search engines and says nothing about how TikTok posts rank on Google.
