How to Boost an Instagram Post (and Why It Fails)
How to boost an Instagram post: open it from your profile, tap Boost below it, set a goal, audience, daily budget and duration, then tap Boost post. You need a professional account and must be over 16. Meta reviews every boost before it runs, typically within 24 hours, and reels and stories have their own eligibility rules on top.
Boost here means one thing: Meta’s own paid ad feature, never bought likes or followers. Posting for free comes first, and our Instagram basics guide covers it.

What does boost post mean on Instagram?
Boosting turns a post, reel or story you’ve already shared into an ad: you pay for Instagram to show it to more people, in an audience you pick, for as long as you set. Instagram says boosted posts appear in Explore, Home Feed, Explore feed, profile feed and Stories. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Boost a post on Instagram (+ Troubleshoot boosting content)
Every boost asks for the same four settings:
- Goal: what you want people to do when they see the ad. Instagram’s Ad tools article lists more profile visits, website visits or messages. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Use Ad tools to boost an Instagram post
- Audience: who you want to see it.
- Budget: how much you want to spend daily.
- Duration: how long the ad runs.
Because a boost is an ad, Meta reviews it against its ad policies before it starts running.
What you need before you can boost
A professional account (creator or business) and an age over 16. Instagram’s troubleshooting article puts it plainly: “To create ads on Instagram, you need to switch your personal or private account to a professional account and be over 16 years old.” Checked against Instagram Help Center: Boost a post on Instagram (+ Troubleshoot boosting content) If you’re on a personal account, see how to switch to a business account on Instagram first; a private account becomes public when you switch. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Set up a professional Instagram account to access business or creator tools and controls
Three more things can come up:
- An ad account choice. Instagram asks whether to boost with a Facebook ad account (you log in to a Facebook account with admin access to a Meta ad account) or without one. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Boost ads on Instagram with Meta Ad Account options
- A Facebook Page prompt you can skip. If your professional account isn’t linked to a Page, Instagram prompts you to connect one; you can choose a Page or tap Skip.
- Region and topic limits. In the EU, EEA and Switzerland, advertising is limited for accounts whose Accounts Center has a subscription to use Meta products without ads, or a less-personalized ad experience. In the US, ads about credit, employment, housing, social issues or politics must pick a Special Ad Category. How to boost an Instagram post
Boost from the post itself: go to your profile, tap the post, tap Boost below it, fill in Goal, Audience, Budget and Duration, then tap Boost post. Instagram’s iPhone and Android steps are word for word the same:
On iPhone:
- Go to your profile.
- Tap the post you'd like to boost.
- Below the post's image, tap Boost.
- Fill in the details of your ad by setting the Goal (what do you want people to do when they see your ad), Audience (who you want to see your ad), Budget (how much you want to spend daily) and Duration (how long you want your ad to run). Tap Next once you've completed these details.
- Tap Preview ad to review the placements that your ad will run and control Advantage+ creative.
- To complete your ad, tap Boost post.

On instagram.com, the flow is shorter:
On the web:
- Click Profile, or select your profile picture to go to your profile.
- Select the post you'd like to boost, then click Boost.
- Fill in the details of your ad by selecting a Goal (what results you'd like from this ad), Audience (who you want to reach), Budget (how much you want to spend daily) and Duration (how long you want your ad to run).
- To complete your ad, select Boost post.

Boosting from Ad tools
The Professional dashboard has a second route, Ad tools, where you choose a post or story to boost. Its steps include the Facebook Page prompt, which you can skip.
On iPhone:
- Go to your profile.
- Tap Professional dashboard.
- Tap Ad tools.
- Tap Choose a post.
- Choose a post or story that you'd like to boost.
- Tap Next.
- If you didn't link to a Facebook Page when you set up your Instagram professional account, you will be prompted to connect a Page. You can choose an existing Page or tap Skip.
- Fill in the details of your ad by setting things like Goal, Audience, Budget and Duration. Tap Next (iPhone) or the arrow (Android) once you've completed these details.
- To complete your ad, tap Boost post under Review.
Checked against Instagram Help Center: Use Ad tools to boost an Instagram post.
Android follows the same steps. Once the ad is submitted, its insights show in the Ad tools section. One wrinkle: this article’s “Before you begin” asks for a business account, while the Boost a post article says any professional account.
How long does it take for a boosted post to be approved?
Typically within 24 hours, although Meta says it may take longer in some cases. Review starts automatically before an ad begins running and relies mainly on automated tools, according to Meta’s Advertising Standards. Your boost doesn’t run until it’s approved. Checked against Meta Transparency Center: Introduction to the Advertising Standards
What happens after you tap Boost post:
- Submitted. Instagram notifies you.
- In review. The status reads “In review” while the ad is checked against Meta’s ad policies.
- Approved or disapproved. You’re notified either way, in your Activity Feed according to the Ad tools article. An approved ad starts running.
- Running. Meta can review an ad again after it goes live.
- Ended. Instagram notifies you when the boost finishes.

A rejection isn’t always the end: Meta says rejected ads can usually be edited, and you can request another review in Account Quality.
Why can’t I boost my Instagram post?
Either the account blocks it (personal, or a holder who isn’t over 16) or the content does: reels and stories have their own eligibility rules. This checklist combines Instagram’s three boosting articles:
| What blocks a boost | Feed post | Reel | Story |
|---|---|---|---|
| A personal account, not a professional one | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Account holder isn’t over 16 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Licensed or copyrighted music | — | Yes | Yes |
| Product tags | No, allowed | Yes | — |
| Face or camera effects, third-party filters | — | Yes | Only Instagram-made effects allowed |
| GIFs | — | Yes | Yes |
| Polls, quizzes, link stickers or other interactive stickers | — | Yes | Yes |
| Emojis | — | — | Yes |
| Longer than 90 seconds, or not full-screen 9:16 | — | Yes | — |
| Posted before 15 October 2021 | — | Yes | — |
| Already shared to Facebook | — | Yes | — |
| More than one story card | — | — | Yes |
| Expired, and not in a highlight or reposted from your archive | — | — | Yes |
A dash means Instagram’s article for that format doesn’t list it. Feed-post rules come from the Boost a post article; reel and story rules from their own articles:

Two more causes sit outside the table: the EU, EEA and Switzerland subscription limit above, and an ad that review disapproved. Collab posts are a grey area, because Instagram’s boosting help doesn’t say whether one can be boosted. Can you boost a reel or a story?
Yes, both, as long as they pass the checklist above. A reel boosts from the same Boost button below it, and the final button reads Boost reel. Boosted reels can appear in the Reels tab, Explore, Feed and Stories. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Boost an Instagram Reel
Stories start somewhere else: from your profile picture.
On iPhone:
- Go to your profile.
- Tap your profile picture to access your story.
- At the bottom of the story's image or video, tap Boost.
- Fill in the details of your ad by selecting a Goal, Audience, Budget and Duration. Tap Next (iPhone) or the icon shown in its place (Android) once you've completed these details.
- To complete your ad, tap Boost post.
Checked against Instagram Help Center: Boost an Instagram story.
Instagram’s Android steps match. A boosted story keeps running for the duration you set, even after the original story expires from your profile. Most story ads can still carry one location sticker, hashtag sticker, tappable text, countdown sticker or @mention of your own account, and up to 5 people can be mentioned. A link can only be added as an action button while you create the ad, and only if the story has no sticker or interactive element.

Does it cost more to boost in the iPhone app?
It can. When you boost in the Instagram iOS app on an iPhone or iPad, you pay through the Apple App Store, so an Apple service fee is added. Instagram suggests boosting on instagram.com instead. Its article says boosting there “allows you to save 30% on your total ad payment, before any applicable taxes and local fees”, and that the fee “is retained by Apple, not Instagram or Meta.” It names only the iOS app for this fee. The other routes it lists without the fee are adding funds to your ad account from a computer or the Meta Ads Manager app first, Meta Business Suite, and Ads Manager.
Checked against Instagram Help Center: Avoid Apple Service fee when boosting content on Instagram.
How much does a boost cost?
There’s no fixed price, and Meta publishes no single minimum. You set a daily budget and a duration. Meta’s business help says minimum budgets may vary by country and objective, take account of factors including currency, and are calculated as a daily amount. Those articles are written for Ads Manager campaigns, and Instagram’s boost articles give no minimum figure, so any quoted “minimum per day” isn’t Meta’s published rule. Can Outfeed boost or promote a post?
A boost starts from Instagram’s own Boost button or Ad tools, as covered above. If you run a Facebook Page and an Instagram account side by side, our Meta Business Suite guide covers Meta’s shared workspace for both.

Boosting on Instagram: FAQ
How much does it cost to boost a post on Instagram?
There’s no fixed price: you choose a daily budget and a duration when you boost. Instagram’s boost articles give no minimum figure, and Meta’s business help, written for Ads Manager, says minimum budgets may vary by country and objective and are calculated as a daily amount. Boosting in the Instagram iOS app also adds an Apple service fee; Instagram says boosting on instagram.com instead saves 30% on your total ad payment.
Do I need a Facebook Page to boost on Instagram?
No. You need a professional account and must be over 16. Instagram lets you boost with or without a Facebook ad account, and if your professional account isn’t linked to a Facebook Page, you’re prompted to connect one but can tap Skip.
How long does it take for a boosted post to be approved?
Meta’s Advertising Standards say ad review is typically completed within 24 hours, although it may take longer in some cases. Review starts automatically before the ad runs and relies mainly on automated tools. Instagram notifies you when the ad is approved or disapproved, and an ad can be reviewed again after it goes live.
Why can’t I boost my Instagram post?
Check the account first: boosting needs a professional account and an account holder over 16. Then check the content. A reel can’t be boosted if it’s over 90 seconds, isn’t full-screen 9:16, uses licensed music, has face or camera effects, GIFs, product tags or interactive stickers, predates 15 October 2021 or is already shared to Facebook. Stories can’t carry polls, quizzes, music or link stickers.
Can I boost a reel or a story on Instagram?
Yes. A reel has a Boost button below it and must be 90 seconds or less, full-screen 9:16, with no licensed music. A story has a Boost button at the bottom while it’s active, in a highlight or reposted from your archive; it must be a single story card with no polls, quizzes, music, link stickers, emojis or GIFs.
