Here’s how to unlink Facebook and Instagram: in Facebook’s Settings & privacy > Settings > Accounts Center > Accounts, choose Remove next to the account. That ends Meta’s cross-app features between them, and Meta stops combining your information across them within 7 days. An Instagram account connected to a Facebook Page is a separate link, which you disconnect in the Page’s Linked accounts.

If all you want is for posts to stop appearing in both apps, you may not need to unlink anything; skip to stopping cross-posting. For every other Facebook task, start with our guide to using Facebook.

Match your goal to one of three actions. Removing an account from Accounts Center separates your personal Facebook and Instagram accounts. Disconnecting a Page detaches an Instagram account from that Page, which is the business side. Turning off automatic sharing keeps the accounts linked but stops posts being shared between them automatically. The two links sit in different settings, so if you want a clean break, check both.

Open Accounts Center from Facebook’s settings, go to Accounts and choose Remove next to the account you want out. Meta’s guide to managing the accounts in your Accounts Center (checked 2 October 2026) calls this moving an account out, and adds: “When you remove an account from an Accounts Center, any profiles associated with that account will also be removed.” Some people see Meta Account settings instead of Accounts Center, because Meta is moving people across gradually.

Removing it from the Instagram app instead? The same Meta guide gives one route for every app and device: open Accounts Center, tap Accounts or Manage accounts, then Remove next to the account.

If the Instagram account also sits in a business portfolio, that membership is managed in Settings in Meta Business Suite, not on the Page. Checked against Meta Business Help Center: About Settings in Meta Business Suite Our guide to Meta Business Manager explains how portfolios work.

Removing an account from Accounts Center ends the cross-app features between the two, and Meta stops combining your information across them within 7 days. Information already combined stays combined. Meta’s removal steps don’t list the effects, so here is what its Help Center articles on Accounts Center do say, checked 2 October 2026.

What changesWhat Meta says
Connected experiencesThey only work between accounts in the same Accounts Center, so sharing across profiles and logging in with each other stop.
Logging inMoving an account out is how Meta says to turn off login access for it. If your Instagram account was created with your Facebook account, you’ll be prompted to create an Instagram password.
Profile pictureIt no longer syncs for profiles in the account you removed.
SettingsThe removed account gets its own Accounts Center. Settings changed while the two were together, including ad preferences Meta matched for you, still apply and don’t revert.
Your informationMeta stops combining it within 7 days for the uses it lists, and what’s already combined stays combined. Safety uses don’t depend on Accounts Center.

Disconnecting a Page from Instagram matters on the business side. Meta Business Suite’s cross-posting needs the Page and the Instagram account connected and in the same business portfolio. Checked against Meta Business Help Center: About cross-posting to Facebook, Instagram and Threads in Meta Business Suite The same goes for any scheduling tool that connected Instagram through Facebook Login: Meta’s Instagram Platform overview (checked 2 October 2026) says those apps need the Instagram professional account connected to a Facebook Page. Tools that use Instagram’s own login don’t. Our guide to scheduling Instagram posts covers the native options.

Changed your mind later? Meta says you can move accounts into or out of an Accounts Center at any time; how to link Facebook to Instagram has the steps.

Only want to stop cross-posting?

You may not need to unlink at all. In Accounts Center, Connected experiences > Sharing across profiles has an Automatically share toggle that starts or stops sharing your posts or stories between the profiles you pick, per the Meta guide to connected experiences linked in the table above (checked 2 October 2026). For the other ways posts reach both apps, see how to share Facebook posts to Instagram.

Usually because you’re in the wrong settings, or Meta needs one thing from you first. Check these in order.

  • You can’t switch into the Page. The Page route starts by switching into the Page, which takes Facebook access; task access can’t do it. Only someone with full control can change who has access. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Create and manage a Facebook Page
  • Meta asks for a password. If your Instagram account was created with your Facebook account, removing it from the Accounts Center prompts you to create an Instagram password.
  • The account isn’t listed. Meta’s early-2026 change to logging in means some Facebook and Instagram accounts “will be moved into different Accounts Centers” unless every account in one is allowed to log into the others. Yours may already be separate.
  • There’s no Accounts Center. Look for Meta Account settings instead; Meta is moving people across gradually. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Add or remove your accounts and profiles from an Accounts Center or Meta Account

If you publish with Outfeed AI, it connects Instagram through Instagram’s own login and your Facebook Page separately with Facebook Login, so neither connection depends on the link you’re removing.

Frequently asked questions

Removing an account from Accounts Center ends the connected experiences between them, such as sharing across profiles and logging in with each other, and your profile picture stops syncing. Meta stops combining your information across the accounts within 7 days, though information already combined stays combined. Disconnecting a Page from Instagram is a separate action, and in some cases it can cancel an active Meta Verified subscription.

Will unlinking Instagram from Facebook delete my posts?

Meta’s articles on removing an account from Accounts Center don’t mention deleting posts. They say a Facebook or Instagram account moved out of an Accounts Center will live in its own Accounts Center, so removing the link doesn’t delete either account. Settings changed while the two were together still apply afterwards.

How do I disconnect my Instagram from my Facebook Page?

Switch into the Page, open Settings & privacy, then Settings, then Linked accounts, click Instagram and choose Disconnect account. On a computer and on Android, Meta’s steps then confirm with Yes, disconnect. In some cases, disconnecting a subscribed Page and Instagram account can cancel an active Meta Verified subscription, so check that first.

Yes. Meta says you can move accounts into or out of an Accounts Center at any time. Open Accounts Center, choose Accounts, then Add accounts and follow the prompts. An Accounts Center holds only one Facebook account, so remove any other Facebook account first.

Check which link you’re removing. The Page route starts by switching into the Page, which takes Facebook access; task access can’t do it. In Accounts Center, if your Instagram account was created with your Facebook account, Meta prompts you to create an Instagram password when you remove it. And if an account isn’t listed, it may already sit in a separate Accounts Center.
