How to Post a Video on Facebook (With Subtitles)

Updated 10 min read

Every video you post on Facebook is now a reel. Meta’s September 2025 update shares all video uploads that way, at any length or orientation; only Stories and Live are exempt. On a computer, go to your profile, click Reels, then Create reel. For a Page, switch into the Page and click Add video in the post composer.

Knowing how to post video on FB now mostly means knowing which route to take, so each one gets Meta’s own steps here (a computer for your profile; a computer, iPhone and Android for a Page), followed by subtitles and a copy-ready .srt file. New to profiles and Pages? Our guide to profiles, Pages and the rest of Facebook explains the difference.

How to post a video on Facebook

Whether you post or share a video on Facebook, choose by destination: the format is already decided, because every video upload becomes a reel. On a computer, Meta’s steps for your profile start in its Reels tab; a Page takes videos through the post composer once you’ve switched into it, on a computer or in the app. Effects, music and multiple clips in one reel need the Facebook app for iPhone or Android. Why does my Facebook video post as a reel?

Because Meta unified all video uploads under the Reels format in September 2025. Every video posted to Facebook, except Stories and Live, is now shared as a reel regardless of length or orientation. So a long horizontal video becomes a reel too; nothing is wrong with your upload. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Create a reel on Facebook

What Meta changed

  • Timing: announced on 17 June 2025 on the Facebook creators blog (checked 2 October 2026), with a gradual rollout over the following months; Meta’s Help Center dates the update September 2025.
  • Limits: Meta said Facebook Reels “won’t have any length or format restrictions after this change,” from a 30-second vertical clip to a horizontal episode of 20 minutes or more.
  • Names and numbers: the Video tab is now the Reels tab, and Meta said video and reels metrics would be consolidated into Reels analytics.
  • Exceptions: Stories and Live aren’t affected.

How to post a video on Facebook from a computer

Go to your profile, click Reels, then Create reel, and add the video from your computer. Before publishing you can trim it, add a description and hashtags, pick a cover image, set the audience and turn remixing on or off. The computer uploader has no effects, music or multi-clip editing; Meta keeps those in the Facebook app for iPhone and Android.

On a computer:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook, then click your name to go to your profile.
  2. Click Reels, then click Create reel.
  3. Click Add video, then select a video on your computer. Click Next.
  4. (Optional) Trim your video, add a description, hashtags, or select a cover image.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Describe your reel… to add a description or any hashtags.
  7. Select the audience for your reel (Public, Friends or Friends except), then click Done.
  8. Switch remixing on or off.
  9. Click Publish to share your reel.

Checked against Facebook Help Center: Create a reel on Facebook.

Three settings to know:

  • Remixing. If it’s on and the reel is public, other people can use your original audio or clips in their own reels.
  • Audience on a locked profile. If your profile is locked, you can’t choose a Public audience for a reel. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Create a reel on Facebook
  • Audience next time. For posts in general, Meta says a new audience applies to that post only: your next post goes back to your default, and the change shows on all your devices. Checked against Facebook Help Center: Choose who can see your post on Facebook

Meta’s reel article gives these steps for a computer only, so this guide prints no app steps for profile videos. To put a song on a reel or post, see how to add music to a Facebook post.

How to post a video on a Facebook Page

Switch into the Page, start a post from What’s on your mind? and add the video. On a computer, Video Options lets you add a title, tags, captions or a thumbnail before you click Post. In the iPhone and Android apps you tap Photo/video and can edit the clip with in-app tools. If you only have task access to the Page, Meta’s route is Meta Business Suite.

On a computer:

  1. Log into Facebook, then click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all profiles, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. Click What's on your mind, [Name]? at the top of your Feed.
  4. Click Add video, then select the video you want to post.
  5. Add other details you may want.
  6. Optional: Click Video Options to add a title, tags, captions or thumbnail.
  7. Click Post.

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook or your profile picture.
  2. Tap Options, then select the Page you want to switch into.

  5. Choose the video you want to share and tap Next, or tap Record video to create a new video.
  6. Tap the video to see options to edit your video with in-app tools, then tap Next.
  7. Tap Next in the top right and select your post settings.
  8. Tap Post now at the bottom.

On Android:

  7. Tap Share now.

To edit a Page video later, Meta says to log into Facebook or Meta Business Suite on a computer; our Meta Business Suite guide covers that tool, and how to schedule Facebook posts covers sending a post out later.

Outfeed AI can also publish a video to your Page from the same chat that posts to eight other networks (TikTok posts publish as private while TikTok reviews the app), within limits: Pages only, never profiles or Groups; one MP4 or MOV per post, up to 1 GB and 20 minutes, uploaded through the Page’s video endpoint rather than Facebook’s Reels tools; and no music, effects or caption files, so add captions afterwards with Options > Edit Post.

How to add subtitles to a Facebook video

Facebook calls them captions, and the route depends on where the video lives. A Page video has a Closed captions step during upload, where you can auto-generate captions and edit them, write your own, or upload a SubRip (.srt) file. A video on your profile gets captions after it posts: edit the post and upload an .srt file. Anyone watching a captioned Page video with the sound off sees the captions automatically.

How to format an .srt subtitle file for Facebook

Name the file with a language and country code, as in filename.en_US.srt, and give each caption block a number, a start and end time, and the text. The language goes in lower case and the country in upper case. Save the file as UTF-8, number the blocks from 1, write every time as hh:mm:ss,fff and leave one blank line between blocks. This sample follows Meta’s rules; copy it and replace the lines with yours:

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:02,500
Welcome back to the studio.

2
00:00:02,600 --> 00:00:06,000
Today we're packing this week's orders.

Saved as studio-update.en_US.srt, it’s ready to upload. Check your own file against Meta’s list:

  • Encoding: UTF-8. If yours isn’t, Meta suggests opening it in any text editor and saving it again under a new file name.
  • Numbers: each block has a unique sequence number, starting at 1 and running to the last block.
  • Times: every digit in hh:mm:ss,fff, with leading zeros (Meta’s example: 01:09:05,050), and only two colons and one comma.
  • Spacing: a single blank line between blocks, and no spaces or lines after the last one.
  • Name: Meta accepts only the language and country pairs on its list, such as en_GB, es_ES, es_LA, fr_FR and fr_CA.

Checked against Facebook Help Center: Why you may be having problems adding captions to your reel on Facebook.

Checked against Facebook Help Center: What is the naming convention for SubRip (.srt) files?.

The --> arrow between the two times is standard SubRip notation. Meta shows its own example only as an image; Google’s YouTube Help page on caption file formats (checked 2 October 2026) writes the same notation out as text.

How viewers turn on captions

On a computer, a viewer turns on Always Show Captions under Settings & privacy > Settings > Media; on iPhone, Facebook follows the phone’s Closed Captions + SDH accessibility setting. Either way, captions appear only on videos that have them, and the computer setting applies only to videos watched on a computer.

On a computer:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Select Settings & privacy, then click Settings.
  3. Scroll down and click Media in the left column.
  4. Click Toggle next to Always Show Captions to turn on or off captions for Facebook videos, when available.

On iPhone:

  1. Go to your device's home screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accessibility, then tap Subtitles & Captioning.
  4. Tap next to Closed Captions + SDH to turn on captions for videos, when available.

FAQ

Why is my Facebook video posting as a reel?

Because Meta unified all video uploads under the Reels format in its September 2025 update. Every video posted to Facebook, except Stories and Live, is now shared as a reel regardless of length or orientation. Meta announced the change on 17 June 2025, and the Video tab is now called the Reels tab.

How long can a Facebook video be?

Meta’s June 2025 announcement said Facebook Reels won’t have any length or format restrictions after the change, and its Help Center says every video except Stories and Live is shared as a reel regardless of length or orientation. Meta’s own example ran from a 30-second vertical clip to a horizontal episode of 20 minutes or more.

How do I post a video on a Facebook Page vs my profile?

For your profile on a computer, go to your profile, click Reels, then Create reel, add the video, choose the audience and click Publish. For a Page, switch into the Page first, click What’s on your mind? and choose Add video, or tap Photo/video in the app. On a computer, a Page upload also offers Video Options for a title, tags, captions or a thumbnail.

How do I add captions or a thumbnail to a Facebook video?

On a Page video, you can auto-generate captions and edit them, write your own, or upload a SubRip (.srt) file, and Video Options on a computer adds a title, tags or a thumbnail. On your profile, edit the post once the video is ready and upload an .srt file under Add captions. A reel uploaded on a computer can also get a cover image.
