What Is Instagram Direct? Inbox, Requests, Vanish Mode
Instagram Direct is Instagram’s built-in private messaging feature: the inbox where you send one-to-one and group messages, photos, videos, voice notes and shared posts that don’t appear on your profile or in any feed. Instagram launched it on 12 December 2013. The app now labels it simply Messages, and most people just say DMs.
What is Instagram Direct in 2026, then? The same inbox under its launch name (IG Direct for short). This tour is written by a company that publishes to Instagram but doesn’t sell DM automation, and it covers the privacy change some guides still get wrong: Instagram switched off end-to-end encrypted chats on 8 May 2026.

What Is Instagram Direct Called Now?
In the app, Instagram Direct is now just “Messages”: tap Messages at the bottom of the mobile app, or Messages on the left at instagram.com. The old name survives in Meta’s own documentation: Instagram’s help centre still refers to “Instagram Direct” in places, and Wikipedia notes that in some regions people call messages “directs”. IG Direct is the same thing, shortened.
Two things it isn’t. It isn’t the generic DM, which exists on every platform; that’s covered in what DM stands for. And it isn’t the standalone Direct app: Instagram tested that camera-first messaging app in six countries (Uruguay, Chile, Turkey, Italy, Portugal and Israel) from December 2017, according to TechCrunch, then told users in May 2019 that it would stop supporting it and move their conversations back into the main app, as Engadget reported.

The Four Folders in Your Instagram Inbox
Every Instagram inbox splits into your main chats, message requests, and a Spam folder inside Requests; business and creator accounts get a fourth folder, General, to divide the main list in two.

To check the last one, tap Messages, then Requests, then Spam. Instagram’s help centre calls this folder Spam. When Hidden Words launched in April 2021, Instagram described it as “a separate hidden requests folder”, so older guides may still call it Hidden Requests. Professional accounts can also sort their requests by date received or by top accounts.
Instagram Message Requests: What They Mean
A message request is a message from someone you don’t follow, parked in Requests until you accept or delete it, and until you accept, it can only be text. Instagram’s help centre is explicit that photos, videos and voice notes can’t be sent until a request is accepted.
What you can do with one:
- Accept. Future messages from that person go straight to your main chats.
- Delete. Or tap Edit, then Delete all, to clear the whole folder.
- Block or report. Accounts you’ve blocked can’t send you requests at all.
Where requests go is your call. Under Messages and story replies, then Message requests, you choose whether requests reach your Requests folder or aren’t received at all, and who can add you to group chats.
One default worth changing: Hide unwanted message requests, which sends likely scams and offensive requests to Spam, is off by default for adults. It’s switched on automatically for Teen Accounts, which also limit teens to messages from people they follow or are already connected to.

What Is Vanish Mode on Instagram?
Vanish mode is an opt-in chat mode: swipe up in a conversation with another Instagram account, and the messages, photos and videos you send disappear when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off. Swipe up again to switch it off.
The rules, from Instagram’s vanish mode help page:
- Disappearing messages can’t be copied, saved or forwarded.
- Accounts you haven’t connected with before can’t send you requests in vanish mode.
- It only works in a chat with another Instagram account, and some professional accounts can’t receive vanish-mode messages.
- It isn’t available on computers, and may be unavailable in Japan and in Europe.
- People can still take a screenshot or screen recording; Instagram notifies you if it detects one. Nothing stops someone photographing the screen with another phone.
In some locations the same swipe turns on disappearing messages instead. Those stay in the chat for a timer you choose, which you can change with “Change timer”, and they don’t work in group chats or in chats with Messenger or Facebook accounts.
Separate again: the camera inside a chat sends disappearing photos and videos, set to View once, View twice or Unlimited views, and only to people who follow you or have accepted your messages.
Is Instagram Direct Still Private After May 2026?
Your DMs are still private from other users, but since 8 May 2026 Instagram no longer offers end-to-end encryption for them. Instagram’s help centre puts it plainly: “End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram is no longer supported as of May 8, 2026.” People with affected chats were given instructions to download them, and Meta points anyone who wants encrypted chat to WhatsApp.
What that means in practice:
- For most people, nothing changed technically. Encrypted chats on Instagram were an opt-in option, never switched on for everyone by default. According to MacRumors, Meta’s stated reason for dropping them was that very few people were opting in.
- For those who had opted in, the protection is gone. Without end-to-end encryption, a message is no longer readable only by the people in the chat, and MacRumors noted that Meta will potentially be able to see the contents of all messages.
- Business chats come with their own terms. In a chat labelled Business chat, Meta says it may use messages to speed up business responses, personalise ads and improve features such as translation and AI.
- Vanish mode is not encryption. It removes messages from the chat. It doesn’t stop screenshots, a second camera, or the other person reporting the conversation.
Some popular guides still say Instagram DMs are end-to-end encrypted; since 8 May 2026 that’s wrong. DMs are fine for everyday conversation and the wrong place for passwords, ID numbers or anything confidential. Use an end-to-end encrypted app for those.
Read Receipts, Unsend, Edit and Schedule
Instagram gives you five controls over messages you’ve sent or read, and each has a catch.

Can people see when you’ve read their message? Yes, if your read receipts are on. Does the other person get a notification when you unsend? Instagram’s help page doesn’t describe one; its warning is that they may have read it already. On a computer, the inbox sits under Messages on the left at instagram.com, though vanish mode is mobile-only.
What Does Inquire Mean on Instagram?
“Inquire” means “ask this business a question”: it’s a button some business accounts show that opens a private message to them. Tapping it doesn’t buy or book anything by itself.
A caveat: Instagram’s help centre has no article about an Inquire button (we checked on 25 September 2026), and third-party guides disagree about where it appears. Some place it beside Follow and Message on a business profile; others describe it at the top of a business chat, sometimes with a time-slot picker for service businesses.
What Instagram does document is the Contact button professional accounts can add (phone, email or directions) and business chats, which show a “Business chat” label in the header. So treat Inquire as a variant of Message: it starts a conversation, possibly answered by automated tools. If a seller then asks you to pay outside Instagram, note that Meta says it doesn’t refund person-to-person or off-site transactions.
Instagram Direct for Businesses: What Can Be Automated
Businesses can automate Instagram DMs, but only as replies: Meta’s messaging API lets an app message someone only after that person has messaged the business, and gives the app 24 hours to respond. It requires a professional account; a human-agent tag lets live support answer outside that window. The rules are in Meta’s Instagram messaging API documentation.
Two things users are told up front:
- Accounts you message “may use third party apps or automated services to send messages in chats”, and businesses can build automated chats with Meta’s APIs.
- If you allow it, tools such as Meta Business Suite can read and send your Instagram messages. The switch is under Messages and story replies, then Message requests, then Connected tools.
