What does restricting someone on Instagram do? Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them, your chat with them moves to Message Requests, and they can’t see when you’re online or whether you’ve read their messages. You also stop getting notifications for their comments. It sits between muting someone and blocking them.

Since a 30 May 2024 update, Instagram says restricted accounts also can’t tag or mention you in their posts or remix your Reels. Whether the person is told is murkier, as explained below. Instagram’s other privacy controls are in our guide to how to use Instagram.

What happens when you restrict someone on Instagram?

Restricting changes six things: who sees their comments, which notifications you get, where their messages land, what they can see of your activity, how group chats behave and whether they can tag you. Neither Instagram’s help article nor its Restrict announcement and guide say it hides your posts, stories or profile from them.

  • Comments. Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them. Tap See comment to read one, then Approve twice to make it public, or delete or ignore it. Instagram’s wording covers new comments only.
  • Notifications. You stop getting notifications for their future comments.
  • Messages. Your chat moves out of your main inbox into Message Requests, and their future messages go there automatically. You can read what they send without them knowing you’ve seen it, then delete the message, block them or unrestrict them. Our guide to Instagram Direct explains the inbox folders.
  • Online status and read receipts. They can’t see when you’re online or whether you’ve read their messages.
  • Group chats. In a group chat with someone you’ve restricted, Instagram warns that you’ll see their messages there, and you can stay or leave.
  • Tags, mentions and remixes. Restricted accounts can’t tag or mention you in their posts or remix your Reels, according to the 30 May 2024 update to Instagram’s Restrict announcement. The Help Center article doesn’t list this. Checked against About Instagram: Introducing the "Restrict" Feature to Protect Against Bullying (2 October 2019, updated 30 May 2024)

For comments and chats from whole groups of accounts, Instagram’s Restrict article points to Limits.

Does the person know they’re restricted?

Instagram’s Help Center article on Restrict doesn’t say whether the person is notified. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Restrict or unrestrict someone on InstagramNot verified Instagram’s blog is plainer: its 22 November 2024 guide to Block, Mute, Restrict and Report says the feature “allows you to discreetly restrict someone without alerting them”. The Help Center’s articles on Instagram’s other controls are explicit:

Can you tell if someone restricted you?

Instagram documents no notice, label or list that shows you’ve been restricted. The most visible effect, their online status vanishing from your chat, has an everyday explanation too: Instagram only shows when someone was last active if you both have Activity Status turned on. How to restrict someone on Instagram

In the app, you can restrict someone from a chat with them, from one of their comments on your post, from Settings or from their profile’s Options menu. On a computer, you restrict from their profile and manage the list under Restricted accounts. Instagram’s app steps are identical on iPhone and Android, so follow the iPhone lists on either. On Instagram Lite, you can only restrict through a profile.

On iPhone: through messages:

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom.
  2. Tap the chat with the person you want to restrict.
  3. Tap the person's name at the top of your chat.
  4. Tap Options in the top right, then tap Restrict.
  5. Tap Restrict to confirm.

On iPhone: through settings:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How others can interact with you, tap Restricted.
  4. Tap Next.
  5. Search for the account you'd like to restrict and tap Restrict next to their username, or tap Unrestrict to unrestrict someone.

On iPhone: through their profile:

  1. Tap their username from their Feed or story post, or tap Search and type their username to go to their profile.
  2. Tap Options in the top right.
  3. Tap Restrict to restrict their account or tap Unrestrict to unrestrict their account.

How to unrestrict someone

Use the same menus you restrict from. Their profile’s Options menu, the comment menu and the Restricted list in Settings each offer Unrestrict, and on a computer the Restricted accounts list shows everyone you’ve restricted.

Instagram’s help article doesn’t say what changes back. Its 2019 Restrict announcement said an unrestricted account’s future messages go directly to your inbox. Neither page says whether comments left hidden become visible, so approve any you want others to see before you unrestrict. What does restricting someone on Instagram do that blocking or muting doesn’t?

Restrict works on what one person does on your account: their comments, their messages, their tags. Block cuts them off from your account, Mute changes what you see of them, and Limits hides comments and chats from whole groups for up to four weeks at a time. The table compares five of Instagram’s controls cell by cell, from Instagram’s own pages.

RestrictMuteBlockRemove followerLimits

A dash means Instagram’s article on that control doesn’t mention it. † Not in the Help Center: these come from Instagram’s May 2024 update and November 2024 guide. Other cells come from the Help Center articles cited in the notification section.

Restrict vs block vs mute: which should you use?

Restrict when one person’s comments or messages are the problem and blocking might make things worse, Block when you want them out of your account, Mute when the issue is what you see of them, and Limits when many accounts pile in.

  • Harassment from one person. Instagram built Restrict for this: its 2019 launch post says it “is designed to empower you to quietly protect your account while still keeping an eye on a bully.” You can still read what they send.
  • You want them gone. Block. Their likes and comments come off your posts, their messages stop reaching you, and you can extend the block to other accounts they have or create. If they break Instagram’s rules, report them too.
  • An ex, or anyone whose posts you’d rather not see for now. Mute hides their posts, stories or messages from you while you keep following them; how to mute people on Instagram covers each route. To keep your stories from them too, hide your story from specific people, which doesn’t hide your profile or posts. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Hide your Instagram story from someone
  • A pile-on from accounts you don’t know. Turn on Limits, below. For comments already posted, you can manage several at once on your post: delete up to 25 at a time, or block or restrict the accounts behind them. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Manage multiple comments on your Instagram posts Bot-like accounts? Our guide to spam accounts covers the signs.
  • A follower you’d rather not have. On a private account, remove them from your Followers list; they aren’t notified. Who sees that list is covered in how to hide followers on Instagram.

When to use Limits instead

Use Limits when unwanted comments and messages come from many accounts at once, not from one person. It hides new comments and chats from the groups you choose: accounts that don’t follow you, recent followers (accounts that started following you in the last week) or everyone except your Close Friends. It runs for up to four weeks at a time, you can extend it, and Instagram says the people limited aren’t told.

Limited accounts can still comment, but their comments stay hidden unless you approve them, and comments made while Limits is on stay hidden after you turn it off. Only their new chats are hidden, in Hidden requests. They can’t reply to your stories, tag or mention you, or remix your content.

Instagram’s iPhone steps, which Android shares word for word:

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How others can interact with you, tap Limit interactions.
  4. Tap What will be limited, then select Some interactions or Most interactions.
  5. Tap Who will be limited, then select Everyone but your Close Friends, Recent followers and/or Accounts that don't follow you.
  6. Tap When we'll remind you to turn this off and choose when you would like to be reminded.
  7. Tap Turn on to confirm.
  8. To turn this tool off, tap Turn off at the bottom.

Restricting on Instagram: FAQ

Can a restricted person see my stories?

Instagram doesn’t say Restrict hides your stories or posts: its help article and announcements cover comments, messages, notifications, online status, tags, mentions and remixes, not stories. To keep your stories from one person, hide your story from them in Instagram’s settings. That doesn’t stop them seeing your profile and posts.

Can a restricted person still message me?

Yes, but their messages skip your main inbox. Your chat with them moves to Message Requests, where their future messages also go. You can read them without them knowing you’ve seen them, and they can’t see when you’re online. You can then delete a message, block them or unrestrict them.

Does a restricted person know they’re restricted?

Instagram’s Help Center article on Restrict doesn’t say. Instagram’s November 2024 blog guide says Restrict lets you “discreetly restrict someone without alerting them.” Its help articles on blocking, muting, unfollowing, removing a follower and Limits each say the person isn’t notified.

Can restricted people tag or mention me?

No, according to an update Instagram posted on 30 May 2024: restricting someone also stops them tagging or mentioning you in their posts and remixing your Reels. The Help Center article on Restrict doesn’t list this. Limits stops tags and mentions too, according to Instagram’s Limits article.

What’s the difference between restrict, block and mute on Instagram?

Restrict limits one person on your account: their new comments are visible only to them unless you approve them, their messages go to requests, and they can’t see when you’re online. Block removes their likes and comments from your posts and stops their messages reaching you. Mute hides their posts, stories or messages from you without unfollowing.
