How to Use Facebook Groups for Marketing

Facebook Groups give a business two ways in. Path 1: run your own group, with your Page as its admin. Path 2: request to join other people’s groups as your Page and take part. Both are free, neither is advertising, and Meta’s own warning covers both: over-selling drives members away.

So how to use Facebook Groups for marketing comes down to which path you’re on, because the rules differ: a Page can create its own groups but can only ask to join anyone else’s, where the admins decide. For Pages, profiles and the rest of Facebook, see how to use Facebook.

How to use Facebook Groups for marketing: two paths

Path 1 builds a community your business runs; Path 2 puts your Page where customers already gather. Meta frames a Page’s own group as a more private space for customers around a shared interest, and its Page-growth guide (as of 2023) recommended posting as your Page in local groups or groups related to your industry.

  • Path 1, your own group: your Page is admin and sets the rules. It suits ongoing help, such as tips, classes or events.
  • Path 2, other people’s groups: their admins set the rules and may not allow Pages. It suits answering questions where customers already ask them.

Facebook Group or Page: what’s the difference for a business?

A Page is your business’s public presence and the only one of the two that can advertise; a group is a space for people who share an interest. Meta recommends Pages for businesses, organizations and public figures. Pages and groups can both hold a business presence for free, and you need a profile to create either.

How to create a Facebook Group as your Page

Switch into your Page, open Groups, then create the group. Anyone with Facebook access to the Page can do it, and the Page becomes the group’s admin. A Page can be the admin of up to 200 groups, which are listed on the Page, and Pages with age restrictions can’t be connected to a group.

On a computer:

  1. Log into Facebook, then click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all profiles, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. From your Feed, click Groups in the left menu.
  4. Click Create New Group in the left menu.
  5. Fill out the onscreen sections for your group.
  6. Click Create.

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook or your profile picture.
  2. Tap Options, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. Tap Menu again, then tap Groups.
  4. Tap the create icon at the top of the page, then select Create a Group.
  5. Fill detail in the on-screen sections for your group.
  6. Tap Create Group.

Meta’s article gives steps for a computer and for iPhone. You can also add your Page as admin of a group you already run. Once the group is live, add a Join group button and post about it on your Page, as Meta’s guide for Pages suggests.

Check the group AI. Where a group is eligible for a group AI, Meta enables it by default; only admins can turn it off, and it isn’t available for everyone or in every region.

On any device:

  1. From your group, tap Manage.
  2. Scroll down and tap Your group's AI below Tool shortcuts. You might have to tap See all tools.
  3. Tap the options icon and select Disable. Tap Disable to confirm.

How to join and post in other groups as your Page

Request to join as your Page, and expect some groups to say no. Meta’s Join a Facebook group article says groups can’t invite Pages, Pages can only request to join, and group admins might not allow Pages at all. If you’re already a member as yourself, it says to change your interaction settings to join as the Page.

Meta notes that Page managers can see and interact with group posts and members, depending on the settings. Once you’re in, answer real questions as the Page where the rules welcome it, with substance rather than a link. Don’t mass-join groups or paste the same post across them: Meta’s spam policy (checked 2 October 2026) covers posting and engaging “at very high frequencies,” manually or automatically.

How to market in groups without driving members away

Give before you ask. Meta’s guidance for Pages in groups is blunt: “Be mindful that over-selling can appear inauthentic and drive members away.” Its suggested benefits for a Page’s group: add value with expert tips, education and events, build a group identity such as a collective name for members, and fill an unmet niche.

Groups work best inside a wider plan: see our Facebook marketing strategy and how to grow followers on Facebook.

Posting to groups from Meta Business Suite

Meta Business Suite on a computer can publish to a Facebook Group. Its Create post screen lists Facebook Group as a destination alongside your Page and Instagram profile, you can cross-post posts and reels to groups, and Planner can show group content. Meta doesn’t say which groups qualify, so check the destination list for yours.

Outfeed AI, which publishes this guide, can’t post to groups: it publishes to Facebook Pages only, never groups or personal profiles. If your plan pairs the two, Outfeed can keep the Page’s posts on schedule from one chat while group posts go through Business Suite or Facebook. How to schedule Facebook posts covers scheduling inside a group, and our Meta Business Suite guide covers the rest.

FAQ

How do I use Facebook Groups to promote my business?

Use one or both paths: run your own group with your Page as admin, or request to join other groups as your Page. Meta frames a Page’s group as a more private space for customers around a shared interest, and warns that over-selling can drive members away, so lead with tips, education and events.

Can a business Page create or join a Facebook Group?

Yes. Anyone with Facebook access to a Page can create a group with the Page as admin, and a Page can admin up to 200 groups; Pages with age restrictions can’t be connected to a group. A Page can also request to join other groups, but groups can’t invite Pages, and admins might not allow Pages at all.

Is it better to have a Facebook Group or a Page for business?

Start with a Page: Meta recommends Pages for businesses, organizations and public figures, and only Pages can advertise. Pages and groups can both hold a business presence for free, so a group run by your Page works as a second space for customers who share an interest.

How do I promote my business in Facebook Groups without breaking the rules?

Read each group’s rules, lead with useful answers and keep promotion to what the admins allow. Admins can suspend members, limit how often they post or slow down comments, and Facebook can restrict posting or require admin approval, for example after Community Standards violations. If restricted, check your Support Inbox and request a review if you disagree.
