How to Hide Followers on Instagram (What Really Works)
There’s no switch that hides your followers. Instagram documents no setting that hides your followers or following list, and the counts on your profile are always public. What works is narrower. A private account limits who sees your posts and the private accounts in your lists, and you can remove or block one person at a time.
So how to hide followers on Instagram comes down to which part you want out of view: the list from strangers, the count, the list from one person, or the accounts you follow. Each has its own section below. Follower lists are one of the privacy controls summarised in our Instagram feature guide.

Can you hide your followers on Instagram?
Partly, and never the numbers. Instagram’s privacy controls decide who sees your posts and some of the accounts in your lists, but no documented setting hides the lists themselves. Here is what each version of the question gets you:
| What you want to hide | Can you? | Instagram’s own control |
|---|---|---|
| Your follower and following lists, from people who don’t follow you | Partly | A private account, which hides the private accounts in your lists from non-followers but not the public ones |
| Your follower or following count | No | None. The counts are public on every account |
| Your posts and lists, from one person | Mostly | Remove them as a follower (private accounts) or block them |
| Who you follow, while your account stays public | No | None documented |
| What you share, from most of your followers | Yes | A Close Friends list, for posts, notes, reels and stories |
Instagram’s Help Center documents no “hide list” switch in its visibility, follower-management or privacy-settings sections.

How to hide followers on Instagram from strangers (go private)
Switch your account to private. Once it’s private, only people you approve can follow you, only your followers see your photos and videos, and the private accounts you follow or that follow you are visible to your followers alone, according to Instagram’s comparison of public and private accounts. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Differences between public and private accounts on Instagram Instagram’s steps:
On iPhone:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below Who can see your content, tap Account privacy.
- Tap the toggle next to Private account to make your account private.
- Tap Switch to private to confirm.

Android uses the same steps. On a computer:
On the web:
- Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
- Click Account Privacy below Who can see your content.
- Click the toggle next to Private account to make your account private.
- Click Switch to private to confirm.

Going private doesn’t remove anyone who already follows you. Instagram’s advice, if an existing follower shouldn’t see your posts, is to remove them from your followers list or block them, both covered below.
Business and creator accounts can’t go private
Instagram says professional accounts, business or creator, can’t be set to private. Checked against Instagram Help Center: About professional accounts on Instagram To go private you’d first switch back to a personal account, and Instagram notes that you then lose access to some Meta business tools, such as Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager. Don’t flip between public and private
Instagram discourages switching back and forth. Accounts that change too many times may be temporarily limited in how many follow requests they can approve per day, and may have existing follow requests removed. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Why you're limited from approving follow requests on Instagram
Under 18? You’re already private
If you’re under 18, your account is private by default. Teens under 16 need a parent’s or guardian’s permission to switch to public; 16- and 17-year-olds can switch without permission unless they’ve set up supervision. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Make your Instagram account private
What a private account still shows
More than most people expect. Going private doesn’t make your profile invisible or hide every account you’re connected to.
- Profile basics and counts. Your name, username, profile picture, bio, links, number of followers and following, avatar, Threads username and any channels you create are public on every account. Instagram says this information “can’t be hidden and remains public regardless of whether your personal account is made private or public.” Checked against Instagram Help Center: What profile information anyone can see on Instagram
- Public accounts in your lists. Instagram’s table says public accounts you follow, and public accounts that follow you, can be seen by anyone on Instagram and Threads, whether your account is public or private. Only the private accounts in your lists are limited to your followers. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Differences between public and private accounts on Instagram
- Your likes on public posts. Your like is visible to everyone, with your username clickable below the post. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Who can see when you've liked a photo, or when someone's liked your photo on Instagram
- Your channel. The same comparison page says a broadcast channel stays searchable, visible and joinable by non-followers after you go private.
Can you hide your follower count?
No. The counts are among the always-public details above, so they show on private accounts too, to anyone on or off Instagram, even people without an account. Instagram says they can’t be hidden, so no app can hide them either.
The number you can hide is a different one: the like count on your posts. That setting is covered in how to hide likes on Instagram.
If spam or bot accounts are padding your count, Instagram may put them in a “Flagged for review” list on public accounts, which you can clear in one go, though it says the feature may not be available to you yet. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Manage unwanted followers on Instagram For telling a bot from someone’s second account, see what a spam account is.
How to hide your followers from one person
Remove them as a follower if your account is private, or block them. Instagram doesn’t notify the person either way. Once they’re no longer a follower of your private account, they lose sight of your posts and of the private accounts in your lists. Blocking goes further: Instagram says a blocked person can’t see your photos or videos or search for your Instagram account. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Unfollow someone on Instagram
Remove a follower
On iPhone:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap Followers at the top.
- Tap X to the right of the follower you'd like to remove, then tap Remove to confirm.

Android uses the same steps. On a computer:
On the web:
- Click your profile picture on the left to go to your profile.
- Click Followers at the top.
- Click Remove to the right of the follower you'd like to remove, then click Remove to confirm.

Instagram’s article is written for private accounts. Only people you approve can follow a private account, so the person can’t follow you again without your approval.
Block them
Blocking makes the person stop following you, removes their likes and comments from your posts and stops their messages reaching you. You can block just their account, or their account plus other existing accounts they have or may create, though that doesn’t extend to their other accounts you already follow. In the app, use your settings:
On iPhone: from your settings:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below Who can see your content, tap Blocked.
- To add someone, tap Add in the top right and search for the person you'd like to block. Tap Block to the right of their name.
- Tap Block at the bottom to confirm.
Checked against Instagram Help Center: What happens when you block someone on Instagram.
Android uses the same steps. On a computer, you block from the person’s profile:
On the web:
- Click their username from their post in your Feed or story post, or click Search and type their username, then click it to go to their profile.
- Click Options in the top right, then click Block.

Blocking isn’t invisibility. People you block can still see your likes and comments on posts shared by public accounts or by accounts they follow. Checked against Instagram Help Center: What happens when you block someone on Instagram
Restrict doesn’t hide lists
Restrict isn’t a list control: Instagram describes it in terms of comments, messages and whether the person can see when you’re online. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Restrict or unrestrict someone on Instagram
Share with fewer people instead
To post for a smaller circle instead, a Close Friends list shares a post, note, reel or story with only the people on it, and they aren’t notified when you add or remove them. It doesn’t change who can see your followers. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Create a Close Friends list on Instagram
Can you hide who you follow while staying public?
No. On a public account, Instagram’s table says anyone on Instagram can see the private accounts you follow, and anyone on Instagram and Threads can see the public ones. No documented setting hides the list while your account stays public.
Instagram’s comparison of public and private accounts notes that people you follow, or who follow you, may be recommended to others who view your account. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Differences between public and private accounts on Instagram In practice: when someone taps Follow on your profile, they see suggestions of similar profiles, such as mutual friends. You can turn these off, but only on the web, from a computer or mobile browser:
On the web:
- Click your profile picture on the left to go to your profile.
- Click Edit profile.
- Click the toggle next to Show account suggestions on profiles to turn it off, then click Submit.

With suggestions off, you also stop appearing as a suggestion on other people’s profiles. Your following list itself stays visible.
Do apps that hide followers work?
No, and the ones that want your password put your account at risk. Instagram says your counts “can’t be hidden”, and who sees your lists is set by its own privacy settings, so an outside app has no extra switch to flip.
The bigger problem is access. Instagram warns against non-Instagram apps that offer likes or followers in exchange for your login: with it, they “can gain complete access to your account”, including your personal messages, and using them can lead to removed engagement, limited features, or a disabled or terminated account. Its advice is blunt: “you shouldn’t use these apps or let anyone else access your Instagram account.”

FAQ
Can you hide your followers on Instagram without going private?
Not with a setting. Instagram documents no option that hides your followers or following list, and on a public account its own comparison table shows the accounts in both lists to anyone on Instagram. You can block individual people: a blocked person stops following you and can’t see your photos or videos or search for your account.
Can you hide your follower count on Instagram?
No. Instagram lists your number of followers and following among the profile details that are always public, on private accounts too, and says this information can’t be hidden. Anyone can see it, on or off Instagram, even without an Instagram account. Like counts on your posts are different: those you can hide.
Does removing a follower notify them?
No. Instagram says that when you remove a follower, they aren’t notified. Its remove-follower article is written for private accounts, and only people you approve can follow a private account, so they can’t follow you again without your approval. Blocking someone also makes them stop following you, and they aren’t notified of that either.
What do people see when your account is private?
Anyone can still see your name, username, profile picture, bio, links and follower and following counts. Only your followers see your posts and the private accounts you follow or that follow you. Instagram’s table adds that public accounts you follow, or that follow you, stay visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads.
Can you hide who you follow on Instagram?
Only partly. On a private account, the private accounts you follow are visible only to your followers, but Instagram’s table says the public accounts you follow stay visible to anyone on Instagram and Threads. On a public account, anyone on Instagram can see everyone you follow, and Instagram documents no setting to hide the list.
