Instagram Poll: Make One in Stories, Reels and Chats

An Instagram poll is either a sticker you put on a story or a reel, or a poll you create in a group chat of three or more people. On a story or reel, you swipe up to see how each person voted. In a group chat, everyone can change their vote or add options while the poll is open.

No Instagram Help Center article covers a poll on a feed post; more on that below. Stickers, chats and every other corner of the app are covered in our Instagram how-to hub.

Where can you make a poll on Instagram?

Stories, reels, group chats and channels are the places Instagram documents. What differs is who can see each vote, so check the last column before you ask anything personal.

Not every sticker is available to everyone or for reels, and Instagram’s sticker article says the feature may be unavailable in Japan and in European countries. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Using stickers on Instagram

How to make a poll on an Instagram Story or Reel

While you add a photo or video to your story, or record a reel, tap Stickers at the top, choose the poll sticker, then write your question and answers. Viewers vote and see the results in real time. Instagram’s steps are the same on iPhone and Android:

On iPhone:

  1. When you share a photo or video to your story or record a reel, tap Stickers at the top.
  2. Select the poll sticker, then write your own question and customize the answers.

How many poll options can you add on Instagram?

Instagram’s published step says to write your own question and customize the answers, and gives no number of options. Group chat polls work differently: anyone in the chat can add options while the poll is active. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Create a poll in a chat on Instagram TikTok’s Comment Polls, announced on 3 September 2026, take up to 5 options; see TikTok’s Comment Polls and other engagement tools.

Quiz sticker and emoji slider

The emoji slider sits in the same section of Instagram’s sticker article as the poll. For a question with a right answer, stories have a Quiz sticker: a multiple-choice question where people learn whether they got it right. You swipe up to see the votes and who voted, as with a poll. How to make a poll in an Instagram group chat

Open a group chat with three or more accounts, tap Add, then Poll, enter your question and answers and tap Create Poll. Anyone in the chat can change their vote or add options while it’s active, and how each person voted shows below the poll. Instagram’s computer article gives no steps, so start from the app:

On iPhone:

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom.
  2. Tap a group name from your Chats list to open the conversation.
  3. Tap Add, then tap Poll.
  4. Enter your question and answers, then tap Create Poll.

One catch: a poll sticker on a photo or video you send in a chat can’t be voted on by tapping. People reply in the chat with their choice instead.

Polls in channels

Channels, Instagram’s one-to-many chats, carry polls too, and votes there are public: Instagram says your reactions, replies and poll responses in a channel are visible to anyone on Instagram. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Join a channel on Instagram Members can react, reply and vote but can’t send messages. Starting a channel needs a public account with more than 1,000 followers, and channels aren’t available to everyone yet. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Create a channel on Instagram Setup is covered in Instagram broadcast channels. TikTok’s bulletin board, its one-to-many equivalent, is for creators 18 or older with at least 50,000 followers.

Can you add a poll to an Instagram feed post?

Not in any way Instagram’s Help Center documents. Its sticker article covers polls in stories and reels, and its chat article covers group chats. No Instagram Help Center article documents a poll on a feed post. The Help Center does have an article on adding a poll to a post, but it’s for Threads, not Instagram. If you want a poll alongside a video, a reel can carry the poll sticker.

How to see who voted on your Instagram poll

On a story or reel, open it and swipe up: Instagram shows how many votes each option received and how each person voted. So a story or reel poll isn’t anonymous to you, the person who made it. In a group chat, each person’s vote shows below the poll. In a channel, poll responses are visible to anyone on Instagram, members or not.

Instagram poll ideas for brands and creators

The best polls are a question your audience can answer in a second, with two clear choices. Some formats that suit the sticker:

  • This or that. Two products, colours or designs, and let followers pick.
  • What should I make next? Two topics for your next reel or post.
  • Timing check. Two days or times for a launch, a sale or a Live.
  • Quick opinion. A yes-or-no take on a trend or question in your niche.
  • Feedback. “Did this help?” at the end of a how-to story.

Plan around one rule if you pay to promote stories: Instagram won’t boost a story that contains a poll or quiz.
