How to Save an Instagram Post as a Draft (and Find It)
Instagram only lets you save a post as a draft once you’ve changed something: an edit, a tag, a caption or a location. Then back out of the post, tap Close and choose Save draft. The draft is saved on that device alone, and if you uninstall the app, Instagram says your drafts are lost.
That’s how to save an Instagram post as a draft in short. Reels work differently: their drafts sit on your profile and can also go to your camera roll. Both are below, with where IG drafts live and why they vanish. Once a draft is ready to go, how to use Instagram covers the rest of posting and beyond.

Where do Instagram drafts go?
Post drafts sit behind Create, then Post, then Drafts. Reel drafts sit under Drafts in your profile’s Reels tab. Both are saved onto the device you made them on, not into your account. The table sorts out each kind, using only what Instagram documents.
| Draft type | How to save it | Where to find it | Where it’s stored | Limit or expiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Post | Change something, back out, tap Close, then Save draft | Create > Post > Drafts | That device only; lost if you uninstall the app | No limit stated |
| Reel | Next, Next, then Save draft | Profile > Reels > Drafts | That device only; lost if you uninstall the app | No limit; kept until you share or delete it |

Instagram’s Help Center has no article on story drafts. What it does document is saving a story’s photo or video to your phone before you share it, with Save (iPhone) or Download (Android) at the top of the screen. Some guides quote a 20-draft cap or a 7-day expiry. Instagram’s reel-draft article says the opposite for reels: “There isn’t a limit to how many drafts you can save,” and drafts are saved until you share or delete them. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Save and edit drafts of your reel on Instagram Its post-draft article gives no limit either way.

Reel drafts reopen from Drafts in your profile’s Reels tab, using the “edit a draft” list in the reel section above. When a post draft is ready, our guide to how to post on Instagram covers the sharing options for each format.
Why did my Instagram drafts disappear?
Because drafts live on one device, anything that removes Instagram’s data from that device, or moves you to another one, can take them with it. Check these, each from Instagram’s, Apple’s or Google’s own pages:
- You uninstalled the app. Instagram says it in both its post-draft and reel-draft articles: “If you uninstall the app, your drafts will be lost.” Checked against Instagram Help Center: Save a post as a draft on Instagram Checked against Instagram Help Center: Save and edit drafts of your reel on Instagram (device storage and limit)
- You deleted the app to free up space on iPhone. That’s an uninstall. Apple says deleting an app removes the app and its related data, while Offload frees the app’s storage but keeps its documents and data. Checked against Apple Support: How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad
- You cleared storage on Android. Google says Clear storage permanently deletes all of an app’s data, while Clear cache deletes only temporary data. Checked against Pixel Phone Help (Google): Free up space on a Pixel phone Instagram’s draft articles don’t mention either option, so treat Clear storage as a risk to drafts, not a confirmed cause. If you’re clearing data to fix a glitch, our guide to clearing the Instagram cache explains each phone’s options first.
- You’re on another phone or tablet. Drafts saved on one device can’t be opened from another, even on the same account.
- It never saved. Without an edit, a tag, a caption or a location, Instagram won’t let you save a post as a draft.
- You already shared it. Instagram says reel drafts are kept until you share or delete them, so a shared reel is no longer a draft.
Can you see Instagram drafts on another device?
No. Instagram says drafts are saved onto your device and “You won’t be able to access a saved draft from another device, even if you log in to your account.” Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t document drafts on instagram.com either. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Save and edit drafts of your reel on Instagram (camera roll)
For reels, saving the draft to your camera roll (above) is a documented way to keep a copy outside Instagram’s own draft storage, minus any music from Instagram’s library. A draft also isn’t a scheduled post: it waits for you to share it. To have a post go out at a set time, see how to schedule Instagram posts. And to take a post you’ve already shared off your profile without deleting it, archive it instead.

Instagram drafts: FAQ
Where do Instagram drafts go?
Post drafts are under Create: tap Post, then Drafts. Reel drafts are on your profile: tap Reels below your profile info, then Drafts. Both kinds are saved onto the device you made them on, so you can’t open them from another device, even if you log in to the same account.
How many drafts can you save on Instagram?
For reels, Instagram’s Help Center says there isn’t a limit to how many drafts you can save, and each draft is kept until you share or delete it. Reel drafts and post drafts are both stored on your device only and lost if you uninstall the app. Instagram gives no limit for post drafts.
Do Instagram drafts expire?
Instagram’s reel-draft article says drafts are saved until you share or delete them. Drafts can still disappear, because they live on one device: Instagram says you can’t open them from another device, and that uninstalling the app loses your drafts.
Can you save an Instagram story as a draft?
Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t document story drafts: its draft articles cover posts and reels. If you want to keep a story’s photo or video, Instagram documents saving it to your phone with Save (iPhone) or Download (Android) at the top of the screen before you share it.
Can you save Instagram drafts to your camera roll?
For reels, yes. Tap Next on the reel you’re recording, swipe up to edit, swipe left to right, then tap Save. Instagram warns that downloading a reel won’t keep music you added from its music library. It documents no camera-roll save for post or story drafts.
