Instagram Suspended My Account: How to Appeal
If Instagram suspended your account, the appeal happens on Instagram’s own screen. Log in on the app or the website: Instagram says it tells you there, and by email, whether you can appeal, and you submit the appeal by following the on-screen instructions. Instagram never DMs you about your account, and Meta has no general public support phone number.
It’s part of our how to use Instagram hub. Below: how to tell a suspension from a disabled or hacked account, Instagram’s route for each, and the “recovery” offers to ignore.

Instagram suspended my account, or is it disabled or hacked?
Go by what Instagram shows you. Its Help Center uses “suspended” and “disabled” in the same article without spelling out the difference, so the screen in front of you is the better guide:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An email, or a notice when you open the app, saying your account is suspended | Suspended; Instagram says whether you can appeal | Log in and follow the on-screen instructions |
| A message that your account is disabled when you try to log in | Disabled; other people can no longer see the account | Ask for a review on screen, if it’s offered |
| No message, but you can’t get in | A login problem, a hacked account or a deleted one | If someone else got in, go to instagram.com/hacked |
| You can log in, but you can’t post | A restriction, not a suspension | Check Account Status |

A deleted account is the one case with no way back: Instagram says there’s no way to restore it. If you’re in the last row, our guide to being banned from posting on Instagram covers Account Status and content reviews.
Why did Instagram suspend my account?
Instagram says accounts that don’t follow its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service may be suspended. Its Help Center gives three examples of what it doesn’t allow: repeatedly contacting people for commercial purposes without their consent, artificially collecting likes, followers or shares, and posting repetitive content. Meta’s enforcement rules add more. It disables accounts that keep posting violating content despite warnings and restrictions, can disable an account after one severe violation, and disables accounts created to get around its restrictions. Two more causes are documented:
- Apps that sell likes or followers. Instagram says using one to gain likes or followers can get an account disabled or terminated. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Why you should not use apps that offer likes and followers on Instagram
- Age rules in some regions. Instagram says that in certain regions it may disable accounts for people in a specific age range to follow local laws. Checked against Instagram Help Center: About disabled Instagram accounts

How to appeal an Instagram suspension
To recover a suspended Instagram account, open Instagram in the app or a web browser and log in. Instagram says the notice there, like its email, tells you whether you can appeal if you believe it made a mistake. If you can, follow the on-screen instructions to submit the appeal. For a disabled account, Instagram describes the same route: log in and follow the on-screen instructions to ask for a review.

The appeal email addresses passed around on blogs don’t appear in Instagram’s articles on suspended or disabled accounts, which describe only the on-screen route. If you can still log in and only some posts were removed, you need a content review through Account Status instead. Don’t open a second account while you wait. Meta disables accounts created to get around its restrictions, and Instagram’s Terms of Use make it a condition of using Instagram that “we must not have previously disabled your account for violation of law or any of our policies”. If you subscribe to Meta Verified, its support covers “general access or security issues”, but Instagram says that support is only for active subscriptions and is reached from the Instagram or Facebook mobile app on the verified profile. How long do you have to appeal?
Instagram’s Help Center doesn’t give a number. It says only that Instagram will tell you whether you can appeal. The 30-day and 180-day windows quoted on blogs don’t appear on any Instagram or Meta page we checked. If your notice shows a deadline, go by that date, and appeal as soon as you can either way.

Instagram’s Help Center gives no time for a decision on a suspension appeal either. The one timeline it gives is for content reviews: up to 90 days to hear back, and a request may be closed before it’s reviewed.
What if your account was hacked and then suspended?
Secure the account first, through Instagram’s own recovery page at instagram.com/hacked. Instagram says to use it on a desktop or mobile browser if someone has gained access or you can’t log in. You can also ask for a login link from the login screen:
On iPhone: request a login link:
- On the login screen, tap Forgot password?
- Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then tap Continue. If you don't have access to them, enter the login information you most recently used, then tap Can't reset your password? below Continue and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Complete the captcha to confirm that you are a real human.
- Select either your email address or phone number, then tap Continue.
- Tap the login link in your email or a text message (SMS) and follow the on-screen instructions.
On Android: request a login link:
- On the login screen, tap Forgot Password?
- Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then tap Continue. If you don't have access to them, enter the login information you most recently used, then tap Can't reset your password? below Continue and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Select either your email address or phone number, then tap Continue.
- Tap the login link in your email or a text message (SMS) and follow the on-screen instructions.
On the web: request a login link:
- On the login screen, tap Forgot password?
- Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with your account, then click Send login link. If you don't have access to them, visit instagram.com/hacked and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Complete the captcha to confirm that you are a real human, then click Next.
- Click the login link in your email or a text message (SMS) and follow the on-screen instructions.
Checked against Instagram Help Center: If you think your Instagram profile has been hacked.
If Instagram emailed you from [email protected] that your email address was changed, you may be able to undo it with the secure my account option in that email. For an account with photos of you, Instagram may ask for a video selfie, which it says is never visible on Instagram and is deleted within 30 days. Once you’re back in, appeal the suspension from the on-screen notice.
How to avoid fake recovery services
Instagram never DMs you about your account, and Meta runs no general support phone line, so offers that reach you those ways aren’t Instagram. Its scam guidance covers the rest:
- No DMs, no “verification services”. Instagram says it will never send you direct messages about your account in the Instagram app, and it lists people claiming to be from Instagram security who ask for account information or offer account verification services as a scam sign. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Avoid getting scammed on Instagram
- No support phone number. Meta has no general public phone number for Instagram customer service and says phone numbers claiming to be Meta support are potentially scams. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Phone support availability on Instagram and other Meta Company Products
- No threats or payment demands. Instagram says not to trust messages demanding money, offering gifts or threatening to delete or ban your account. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Protect yourself from phishing on Instagram
- Only official addresses. Instagram says official messages about account security only come by email, from addresses ending in @support.facebook.com, @support.instagram.com, @facebookmail.com, @mail.instagram.com or @global.metamail.com, and you can check the official emails it sent in the last 14 days in your settings. Already shared your password with one of these services? If you can still log in, Instagram’s hacked-account article says to change your password and revoke access for suspicious third-party apps. If you can’t, go back to instagram.com/hacked.

FAQ
Why did Instagram suspend my account for no reason?
Instagram says accounts that don’t follow its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service may be suspended, and it names three examples: repeatedly contacting people for commercial purposes without their consent, artificially collecting likes, followers or shares, and posting repetitive content. Meta also disables accounts created to get around its restrictions. If you think it’s a mistake, appeal from the on-screen notice after you log in.
How long does an Instagram suspension last?
Instagram’s Help Center gives no set length for a suspension and no set time for an appeal decision. Instagram tells you by email, and when you open the app or website, that the account is suspended and whether you can appeal. The one timeline it publishes is for removed content: a review may take up to 90 days, and a request may be closed before it’s reviewed.
How do I get my suspended Instagram account back?
Log in on the Instagram app or website and follow the on-screen instructions to appeal; Instagram says it tells you whether an appeal is possible. If you can’t log in because someone else took over the account, use instagram.com/hacked or request a login link from the login screen. Instagram says it will never send you direct messages about your account.
Can I make a new Instagram account if mine is suspended?
Not to get around the suspension. Meta says it disables accounts created to get around its restrictions, and Instagram’s Terms of Use make it a condition of using Instagram that it has not previously disabled your account for violating the law or its policies. Appeal the original account instead.
Can Meta Verified support help with a suspended account?
Meta Verified support covers general access and security issues, but Instagram says it’s only for active subscriptions and is reached from the Instagram or Facebook mobile app on the verified profile. The suspension appeal itself is the on-screen route Instagram shows when you log in.
