Twitter Search: How to Use X Advanced Search Operators
Twitter search happens in X’s search box: the Explore tab in the app, or the box at the top of x.com. Type words, #hashtags or @usernames, then switch between Top, Latest, People, Photos and Videos. For exact results, use advanced search, available when you’re logged in to x.com, or the operators X documents, such as from:, since: and min_faves:.

How do you search on X?
Search from the Explore tab in the X app or the search box at the top of x.com. Results mix posts, photos and accounts. Tabs above them narrow the list to Top, Latest, People, Photos or Videos, and a filter limits results to people you follow or to posts near you. X’s steps for x.com:
On x.com (computer):
- Enter your search query into the search box at the top of the page.
- Your results will show a combination of posts, photos, accounts, and more.
- Filter your results by clicking Top, Latest, People, Photos, or Videos (located at the top of your search results).
- Click the Search filters options to filter your results From anyone or People you follow, and Anywhere or Near you. Additionally, you can select a different language or perform an Advanced search.
- Click the more icon on the right hand side of the search results page, then Search settings, to disable (or re-enable) safe search: Hide sensitive content and Remove blocked and muted accounts.

In the X app, you start from the Explore tab; X’s app steps add more tabs, such as News, and a filter icon in the search bar with the same people and location choices. To follow a topic, search its #hashtag; to choose hashtags for your own posts, see our Twitter hashtags guide.
Safe search and saved searches
Safe search keeps potentially sensitive content, and accounts you’ve muted or blocked, out of your results, and you can switch it off or on at any time. Changed on x.com, where X’s iPhone steps send you, it applies on the web, iPhone and Android; Android also shows it under Search settings.
The same X page notes that a safe search change may take several minutes to go into effect, and lists Save this search in that x.com menu for keeping a query. Checked against X Help Center: How to use X searchArchived copy, 30 June 2026 View the archived copy

Which Twitter search operators does X document?
X’s list of search operators sits on its help page for X Pro, which X’s Premium page lists under “Only for Premium+ Tier”. X introduces them as queries you add after running a search in X Pro, and doesn’t say whether each one also works in the regular search box.

X’s table also prints min_rePosts:5, filter:nativerePosts and filter:rePosts, and gives source:postdeck as its source: example. Those spellings look altered by X’s switch from “tweet” to “post” wording, so they’re listed here only as X prints them, not as operators to rely on.
What X does show for regular search: its advanced search page’s own example searches link to ordinary search results built from -word, lang:en, near:, within:, since: and until:. Treat the rest of the X Pro table as X’s documentation rather than a promise, and check what comes back.

Twitter search recipes you can copy
Each recipe below combines operators from X’s table, so swap in your own words, @usernames and dates. Where X’s advanced search form has a matching field, it’s named too, because the form is the route X documents for regular search.
| Goal | Type this | Or use the form |
|---|---|---|
| Old posts from a date range | keyword since:2024-01-01 until:2024-01-31 | Words and Dates |
| One account’s posts on a topic | from:username keyword | People (from an account) and Words |
| Posts with photos or video | keyword filter:media, or filter:images or filter:video | No matching field on X’s help page |
| Replies to an account | to:username | People (replies to an account) |
| An exact phrase without a word | "exact phrase" -word | Words (exact phrase, excluding words) |
| Popular posts only | keyword min_faves:100 | No matching field on X’s help page |
To leave replies out of any tweet search, add -filter:replies: X’s page says a minus before a filter type excludes it.
Can you search X by date?
Yes. Advanced search has Dates fields for posts sent before a date, after a date or within a range, and X says it can find posts from any date since the first public post. Typed out, the same filter is since:yyyy-mm-dd and until:yyyy-mm-dd.
X’s own example, on its advanced search page, looks for posts containing “New Years” but excluding “Resolution” between 30 December 2013 and 2 January 2014. The search it links to reads:
New Years -Resolution lang:en near:"San Francisco, CA" within:15mi since:2013-12-30 until:2014-01-02
To find one account’s old posts, add from:username to a date range, and always write dates as yyyy-mm-dd.
Why can’t I find a post in X search?
Usually because of who can see the post or what your settings hide. Protected posts are searchable on X only by their author and followers, safe search hides potentially sensitive content and accounts you’ve muted or blocked, and a profile page never lists posts that mention that account. Work through these:
- The account is protected. X says protected posts are searchable on X only by the author and their followers, and don’t appear in third-party search engines such as Google. Checked against X Help Center: About public and protected PostsArchived copy, 19 September 2026 View the archived copy
- Safe search is hiding it. Turn safe search off in Search settings on x.com, using the steps above, to include potentially sensitive content and accounts you’ve muted or blocked.
- You’re checking a profile for mentions. “Visiting another account’s profile page on X will not display posts that mention them,” X says, so search for their @username instead. Checked against X Help Center: About replies and mentionsArchived copy, 18 September 2026 View the archived copy
- You’re logged out. Advanced search needs a logged-in session on x.com, and logged-out requests to x.com/search were redirected to X’s login page when we checked on 3 October 2026. Skip third-party sites that offer X search without an account: X’s Terms of Service prohibit crawling or scraping X in any form without its prior written consent. Checked against X Terms of ServiceArchived copy, 3 October 2026 View the archived copy
- A date is in the wrong format. X writes dates as yyyy-mm-dd, so
since:2025-03-01, notsince:03/01/2025. - The post was limited under X’s rules. X’s Authenticity policy lists “excluding posts from search results” among its ways of restricting reach.
