Searching for how to turn off Meta AI? As of 2 October 2026, no Meta help article we checked documents a setting that switches it off in Facebook, Instagram or Messenger. Meta documents narrower controls instead: mute a Meta AI chat, delete what you shared, delete your Instagram chat with it and, as a group admin, disable a group’s AI.

This page changes often. We checked every control below against Meta’s own pages on 2 October 2026. Meta says Meta AI isn’t available to everyone yet, so your options may differ by account, region and app version.

For Facebook’s other settings, see our Facebook feature guide.

Can you turn off Meta AI?

Not with any setting Meta documents: the Help Center articles we checked on Meta AI in Facebook, Messenger and Instagram describe no off switch. Each place Meta AI appears has a smaller control, or none at all.

Where Meta AI shows up on Facebook

On Facebook, Meta AI shows up in four places: an Ask Meta AI option behind the search icon at the top right of your Feed, summaries that may appear while you search, Ask Meta AI below some public and suggested posts, and a chat in your messages, alongside your other DMs. Meta says asking Meta AI isn’t available for every public or suggested post.

Checked against Facebook Help Center: Ask Meta AI on Facebook.

How to mute a Meta AI chat

Muting silences the chat’s notifications; it doesn’t remove Meta AI. Meta’s mute steps are written for any conversation and don’t mention Meta AI, but Meta says an existing Meta AI chat sits in your Chats list (Meta’s Chat with Meta AI article, checked 2 October 2026), so the same per-chat mute applies.

On iPhone:

  1. From Chats, swipe left on a conversation.
  2. Tap More, then tap Mute.
  3. Choose how long you want to turn off notifications for.

On a computer:

  1. Below Chats, hover over the conversation.
  2. Click Options then click Mute notifications.
  3. Below Mute conversation, choose the option that matches what you want to mute, then click Next.
  4. Choose how long you want to mute notifications for, then click Mute.

Checked against Messenger Help Center: Turn Messenger notifications on or off.

How to delete what you shared with Meta AI

Send /reset-ai in the chat. Meta says it built commands that delete information shared in any chat with an AI across Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp, and that typing /reset-ai in a conversation deletes your AI messages. The source is Meta’s newsroom, not its Help Center.

Checked against About Meta newsroom: Privacy Matters: Meta's Generative AI Features (2023-09-27, updated 2025-11-21).

On Instagram, deleting the chat works too: Meta says that if you permanently delete your chat with Meta AI from your inbox and start a new one, your previous messages are no longer available. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Use Meta AI on Instagram In the Instagram app, Meta’s steps for deleting any chat are to tap Messages at the bottom, tap and hold the conversation, then tap Delete and Delete again to confirm (Instagram’s Delete a chat article, checked 2 October 2026).

How to turn off a Facebook group’s AI (admins)

If your group is eligible for a group AI, Meta says it’s on by default and admins can disable it at any time. Members don’t get a documented setting. Meta adds that the feature isn’t available for everyone, in all regions or in all groups.

On any device:

  1. From your group, tap Manage.
  2. Scroll down and tap Your group's AI below Tool shortcuts. You might have to tap See all tools.
  3. Tap the options icon and select Disable. Tap Disable to confirm.

Checked against Facebook Help Center: Edit, disable or enable the group AI in a Facebook group that you admin.

Meta says a group AI answers people in one-to-one chats rather than in the group itself, its responses may be generated from group content such as posts and comments, and in public groups anyone on Facebook can chat with it (Meta’s group AI article, checked 2 October 2026). For running a group for your business, see how to use Facebook groups for marketing.

What Meta does with your Meta AI chats

Meta says it uses your interactions with its AIs to improve AI at Meta and, depending on your region, to personalize content and ads. In end-to-end encrypted chats with other people, messages that mention @Meta AI and messages from Meta AI aren’t encrypted.

Checked against Facebook Help Center: Chat with Meta AI on Facebook.

The same article says that when its AIs can’t answer your query, Meta shares the messages you send to AI and general information, such as your region, with select partners (Meta’s Chat with Meta AI article, checked 2 October 2026).

On training, Meta’s 2023 newsroom post says publicly shared Facebook and Instagram posts, including photos and text, were part of the data used to train the models behind the generative AI features it announced at Connect, and private posts weren’t. A November 2025 update adds that Meta may train its AIs on messages people choose to share with its AI features (Privacy Matters: Meta’s Generative AI Features, checked 2 October 2026). To choose who sees each post, see how to hide your Facebook profile.

To opt out of Meta AI training, Meta says that in certain countries you may be able to object to your interactions with AI at Meta, and the public information you’ve shared on its products, being used to develop and improve AI at Meta in the future. You submit it from your Facebook, Instagram, Meta or WhatsApp account, and it applies to the account you’re logged into and any accounts in the same Accounts Center. That passage doesn’t name the countries (Meta Help Center, “Developing and improving AI at Meta” in Information for people who don’t use Muse, checked 2 October 2026).

Outfeed AI, which publishes this guide, is a separate chat-based tool for writing and scheduling posts to Facebook Pages (not profiles or groups); it isn’t part of Meta AI and can’t change Meta AI settings.
