Add it to a Highlight and it stays on your profile until you remove it.
Asking how long a story video can be? That’s a separate limit: Instagram shows a video of up to 60 seconds as one story clip and breaks longer videos into several clips. How long do Instagram stories last, exactly?
24 hours, counted from the moment you post, in the words of Instagram’s 2026 Stories guide. The same guide says there’s no daily limit on how many stories you post. Checked against About Instagram: How to Use Instagram Stories: Complete 2026 Guide (2 July 2026) One story’s life:
- When you post it: the story is visible in Feed, on your profile and in Direct.
- 24 hours later: it disappears from all three, unless you’ve added it as a highlight. Checked against Instagram Help Center: How long Instagram stories remain visible
- At the same moment: it’s saved to your Stories Archive, which is on by default. If you’ve turned the archive off, the story is deleted instead. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Archive Instagram Stories or turn off Stories Archive
- Up to 48 hours after posting: you can still see who viewed it, from your archive. Checked against Instagram Help Center: How to tell who's seen your Instagram story
- After that: it stays in your private archive, and on your profile only if it’s in a Highlight, which lasts until you remove it. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Add a story to your Story Highlights
Where do stories go after 24 hours?
To your Stories Archive, a private space only you can see. Instagram saves stories there automatically unless you turn the archive off, and you reach it from your profile: tap Menu, then Archive. From the archive you can reshare a story or add it to a Highlight.
One catch from Instagram’s archive help: archived stories you shared publicly are used to improve AI at Meta unless you delete them or make your account private. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Archive Instagram Stories or turn off Stories Archive
Archived copies can also change. To keep up with storage, Instagram may mute music or freeze videos or GIFs when it archives a story, for example a photo story with a music or GIF sticker, and the change is permanent. Stories that contain or reshare original videos you haven’t shared to Feed or Reels aren’t affected. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Archive Instagram Stories or turn off Stories Archive
How long can you see who viewed your story?
Up to 48 hours after you post it. For the first 24 hours, open your story and swipe up. After that, open the story from your archive and swipe up, until the 48 hours are over. Only you can see the list, and the view count includes replays, so it can run higher than the number of names. The steps from your archive (Android’s are the same):
On iPhone: more than 24 hours after posting:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below How you use Instagram, tap Archive.
- Scroll to the story you want to see viewer info on.
- Tap the story and swipe up on the screen.

How to make a story last longer than 24 hours
Add it to a Highlight: it stays on your profile until you remove it, visible to the people allowed to see your stories. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Add a story to your Story Highlights Your four options:
- Highlight: the steps to create and edit one are in our Instagram Highlights guide. If your archive is off, add the story while it’s still live.
- Reshare from your archive: this puts an old story back in your story, where the usual 24 hours apply. Instagram says changes made when a story is archived, such as muted music or a frozen GIF, are permanent.
- Story Extend: Instagram Plus, Instagram’s optional paid subscription, lists Story Extend, which Instagram describes as setting your story to last 48 hours. Its help page says Plus isn’t available to everyone right now. Checked against About Instagram blog: Introducing Instagram Plus
- Share as Post: Instagram’s iPhone help describes turning a story photo or video into a feed post (More, then Share as Post), where it appears on your profile grid like your other posts. Its Android and computer versions say the feature isn’t available there. Checked against Instagram Help Center: Share a photo or video from your Instagram story to feed

Story lifespan FAQ
Do Instagram stories last exactly 24 hours?
Yes. Instagram says stories last 24 hours from the moment you post them, then disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct. The exceptions: a story you add to a Highlight stays on your profile until you remove it, and Instagram Plus, a paid subscription, lists a Story Extend feature that Instagram says sets a story to last 48 hours.
Where do Instagram stories go after 24 hours?
To your Stories Archive, a private space only you can see, where Instagram saves them by default. If you’ve turned the archive off, stories you share from then on are deleted after 24 hours instead.
Can you see who viewed your Instagram story after 24 hours?
Yes, for up to 48 hours after you posted it. Go to your profile, tap Menu, tap Archive, open the story and swipe up. The list and view count don’t include Instagram Plus subscribers who previewed your story.
How do you make an Instagram story last longer than 24 hours?
Add it to a Highlight, which keeps it on your profile until you remove it. You can also reshare it from your archive to your story, where the usual 24 hours apply again, or use Story Extend, an Instagram Plus feature that Instagram says sets a story to last 48 hours.
Can you delete an Instagram story before 24 hours?
Yes. Open your story from Your story at the top of Feed, tap More on iPhone or Options on Android, tap Delete story or Delete, then Delete again. To keep a private copy instead, archive it early: tap Options on the story, then Archive.
