The core Bluesky vs Twitter difference is control: Bluesky runs on the open AT Protocol, so you pick your feed algorithms, add moderation services and can, by design, move your account to another server, while X runs its network itself. Posts are similar in size, 300 characters on Bluesky and 280 on X without Premium.

The rename is covered in what changed when Twitter became X, and Meta’s rival in Threads vs Twitter (X).

Who controls each network?

Bluesky is designed not to be controlled by a single company; X is one company’s platform. Bluesky calls itself a social app built that way, on the AT Protocol, an open-source framework for apps that talk to each other. Checked against Bluesky Help Center (Zendesk): What is Bluesky?

Every account gets a permanent identifier (a DID) and a domain-name handle, data lives on Personal Data Servers, and the protocol’s goal is that you can move your account to a new server without the old one’s help. Checked against AT Protocol docs: Protocol Overview Bluesky opened to everyone on 6 February 2024 and turned on federation weeks later, so people can run their own servers. X documents no comparable protocol. More in what Bluesky is and how it works.

How your feed works

On Bluesky you choose the algorithm; on X you use the timelines X provides. Bluesky’s custom feeds let you pick the algorithm behind your timeline from an open marketplace of feeds made by Bluesky and third-party developers, under My Feeds. X gives you its For You and Following timelines, plus Lists of only the accounts you add, which you can pin beside them. Checked against X Help Center: How to use X ListsArchived copy, 17 September 2026 View the archived copy

Privacy and moderation

X lets you protect your posts so only your followers see them; Bluesky has no private profiles. Bluesky instead lets you stack moderation: its own applies to everyone, and you can subscribe to independent labelers on top.

On Bluesky, posts, likes and blocks are public, while mutes are private. Labelers arrived in March 2024, and everything shown in the Bluesky app still has to follow Bluesky’s community guidelines. Verification and handles

Bluesky verifies in two ways, a domain you own as your handle and blue badges for notable, authentic accounts. On X, the blue checkmark comes with a paid subscription and an eligibility review.

Over 309,000 accounts use a domain handle, per Bluesky’s 2025 transparency report. Checked against Bluesky blog: 2025 Transparency Report Since 21 April 2025, Bluesky also puts a blue badge on notable, authentic accounts it verifies, and Trusted Verifiers, marked with scalloped badges, can verify accounts directly. By the end of 2025 there were 4,327 verified accounts and 21 Trusted Verifiers. Checked against Bluesky blog: A New Form of Verification on Bluesky

Active users: Bluesky vs Twitter

Both companies publish user figures, but they count different things. Bluesky counts accounts, including those on independent servers: its 2025 transparency report says it grew nearly 60% in 2025, from 25.94 million to 41.41 million users. X states monthly users: Elon Musk, its owner, posted on 23 May 2024 that X had 600 million monthly active users. Checked against Bluesky blog: 2025 Transparency Report Checked against Post by Elon Musk (@elonmusk), owner of X (23 May 2024)

X’s newer, dated figure is EU-only. Its Digital Services Act report for January to June 2026, published on 31 August 2026, gives 64,727,103 average monthly active recipients in the EU. Checked against X Transparency Center: DSA Transparency Report, H1 2026 (published 31 August 2026) All of these are company-stated, not audited, and an account total isn’t a count of monthly users, so the numbers can’t rank the two networks.

Bluesky’s help center still quotes an outdated “over 5.2 million” users (March 2024). Checked against Bluesky Help Center (Zendesk): What is Bluesky? Third-party analytics firms publish active-user estimates, but they aren’t company figures, so they aren’t compared here.

Bluesky or X: which should you use?

Choose by what you want to control and where your audience already is.

  • Pick Bluesky if you want to choose your own feeds and moderation, use your domain as your handle, keep the option to move servers, or post videos up to 10 minutes long.
  • Pick X if your audience and sources are there, you need protected posts or encrypted Chat, or you’ll pay for Premium’s longer posts, longer videos and editing.
  • Use both if you need both audiences, writing each post to fit 300 characters for Bluesky and 280 for X, then check the best time to post on Bluesky.

FAQ

What is the difference between Bluesky and Twitter (X)?

Bluesky runs on the open AT Protocol, so you can choose custom feeds, add moderation services and, by design, move your account to another server. X is one company’s network with its own For You and Following timelines. Posts allow 300 characters on Bluesky and 280 on X without Premium.

How many users does Bluesky have compared to X?

By each company’s own count, not audited: Bluesky had 41.41 million users at the end of 2025 (its transparency report, 29 January 2026), and those are accounts, not monthly active users. X’s owner Elon Musk posted on 23 May 2024 that X had 600 million monthly active users, and X’s EU transparency report gives 64.7 million average monthly active recipients in the EU for January to June 2026. Meta said on 16 June 2026 that Threads had 500 million monthly active users. Accounts and monthly users measure different things, so the figures aren’t like for like.

How does verification work on Bluesky vs X?

Bluesky offers two forms: a domain you own as your handle and, since April 2025, blue badges that Bluesky or Trusted Verifiers give to notable, authentic accounts. X’s blue checkmark needs an active Premium or Premium+ subscription and an eligibility review, and X says it doesn’t mean the account is ID verified.

Is Bluesky really decentralized?

It’s designed to be. Each account has a permanent identifier, data sits on Personal Data Servers, and the AT Protocol aims to let you move servers without the old one’s help. Federation arrived weeks after Bluesky opened to everyone in February 2024; by that December, thousands of people ran their own servers.
