IB Meaning on TikTok and Instagram: 'Inspired By'
On TikTok and Instagram, IB stands for “inspired by”: a short credit, usually written “IB @username”, that names the creator whose idea, format or trend a post borrows. Outside social media, IB usually means the International Baccalaureate school diploma, which is why a plain search for IB meaning turns up schools.

IB Meaning in a Caption, a Comment and On Screen
IB goes wherever the credit will be seen: the end of a caption, text on the video, or a pinned comment. It’s written IB or ib, followed by the handle of the person whose idea you used. Next to a handle, i/b is the same credit.
- Caption: “3-ingredient pasta, ib @handle”. You cooked it; the recipe idea was theirs.
- On-screen text: “ib: @handle” in a corner of a dance or transition video, where it stays visible if the video is shared elsewhere.
- Pinned comment: “ib @handle, go watch the original” when the caption is already full.
- Art posts: “ib @artist” on a drawing that reinterprets someone else’s character or style.
In a text message, IB has no settled meaning. If it comes with a handle or a video link, read it as “inspired by”; otherwise, ask.
Where the credit sense came from is unclear. Cambridge Dictionary lists IB only as the “abbreviation for the International Baccalaureate”, and Dictionary.com’s entry for “ib.” is the footnote abbreviation for ibidem. The community-edited Wiktionary is the one dictionary we found that records “inspired by”, labelled as internet and art usage, with no date. Treat any confident origin story with suspicion.
It’s niche shorthand, too, living almost entirely in captions rather than conversation.
Is “IB @Creator” Enough Credit?
It’s the polite minimum, not the whole job. Four habits make it worth something:
- Tag the handle, not a name. “@handle” links to their profile; “inspired by Maria” doesn’t.
- Put it in the caption. A caption credit travels with the post; a comment can sink below newer ones.
- Say what you borrowed. “ib @handle’s scoring pattern” tells viewers which part is theirs.
- Check the handle on each app before cross-posting. The same creator may use different handles on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, so a pasted caption can credit a stranger.
If you’re using their actual footage, audio or photo rather than their idea, IB is the wrong tool. Use Remix, Stitch or Duet, covered below, or ask first.
A caption credit doesn’t make a re-upload original, either: Instagram’s originality rules don’t count “a credit in the captions” as meaningful creative input, and TikTok’s For You feed standards keep “reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits” out of recommendations. What that costs an account on Instagram is covered in how the Instagram algorithm treats unoriginal posts.
Cross-posting a remake is where credits go wrong. In Outfeed AI, you can give the assistant the creator’s handle on each app and check the credit line in each platform’s preview before anything publishes.
IB vs Remix, Stitch, Duet and a Straight Repost
IB credits an idea you re-made yourself. Remix, Stitch and Duet build the credit into the post. A repost shares the original unchanged.
| Option | App | What you post | How the original is credited |
|---|---|---|---|
| IB in the caption | Any | Your own video or photo, borrowing an idea | Only by the words you write |
| Remix | Your reel alongside someone else’s | Automatically, on the remix | |
| Stitch | TikTok | A clip of their video, then yours | Automatically, linked to the original |
| Duet | TikTok | Your video side by side with theirs | Automatically, linked to the original |
| Repost button | Instagram, TikTok | Their post, unchanged | It stays their post |
| Re-upload with a credit | Any | Their file, posted as your own | A caption credit, which Instagram says doesn’t make it original |
The built-in tools also respect the creator’s settings in a way a re-upload can’t. TikTok lets creators limit who can Stitch their videos, and nobody can remix a reel from a private Instagram account.
Instagram’s Repost button, added in August 2025, has its own explainer: what reposting does on Instagram.
IB vs DC, Cr, Inspo, Via and H/T
Each credit shorthand points at a different debt: an idea, a dance, a file or a find.
| Shorthand | Stands for | Credits | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| IB | Inspired by | The creator whose idea, format or trend you re-made | ib @handle |
| DC | Dance credit | The choreographer of a dance you performed | dc: @handle |
| cr, creds | Credit | The owner of a photo, clip or graphic you shared | cr: @handle |
| 📸 | Photo by | The photographer | 📸 @handle |
| inspo | Inspiration | A general influence, often not one person | kitchen inspo |
| via | By way of | The account where you found it | via @handle |
| h/t | Hat tip | Whoever pointed you to it | h/t @handle |
Dictionary.com labels inspo informal, defines it as “an inspiring influence; a motivator or inspiration”, and dates it to 2005–10.
On X, the older credit shorthand is RT, covered with MT and h/t in our guide to what RT stands for. Every other caption acronym is in the Outfeed AI social media glossary.
What Happens If You Copy a Trend Without IB?
As far as the apps are concerned, usually nothing. We found no TikTok or Instagram rule about crediting ideas; what they police is the content itself, meaning re-uploads and unedited clips.
The cost is with people. The best-known case is the Renegade dance. Jalaiah Harmon, a 14-year-old choreographer, debuted it on Dubsmash in September 2019; it went viral on TikTok through bigger creators’ videos, and the credit often went to them, until The New York Times told her story in February 2020.
Forgot the credit? Pin a comment with the handle, or edit the caption where the app allows.
Other Meanings of IB
Most of the time, IB isn’t about social media at all.
- International Baccalaureate: the school diploma programme, and the sense search engines assume for the bare letters.
- ib. or ibid.: the footnote abbreviation for ibidem, used when citing the same source again.
- Investment banking: as in “IB analyst” on a finance CV.
- Rarer senses: Wiktionary adds integrated battlefield (military) and infectious bronchitis (pathology).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does IB mean on TikTok?
IB means “inspired by”. Creators write “IB @username” in a caption, on screen or in a pinned comment to credit the person whose idea, format or trend they re-made. It marks your own version of someone’s idea, not a copy of their video.
What does i/b mean?
Next to a handle in a TikTok or Instagram caption or comment, i/b is the same credit as IB: “inspired by”. Elsewhere the slash form can abbreviate other things, so check the context.
Is writing “IB @creator” enough credit?
It’s the polite minimum. Tag the real handle so it links to them, put the credit in the caption, and say what you borrowed. If you’re using their actual clip rather than their idea, use Remix, Stitch or Duet, or ask first.
What’s the difference between IB and inspo?
IB credits a specific creator whose idea you used, so it comes with a handle. Inspo is a general noun for inspiration, as in “kitchen inspo”, usually a mood or a collection of ideas rather than one person.
