Pick Sprout Social if customer care, polished reporting and approvals drive your social team. Pick Hootsuite for a cheaper inbox seat with monitoring, WhatsApp and SMS, or benchmarks against up to 20 competitors. Both bill per seat: on annual billing, three people pay $3,564 a year on Hootsuite Standard and $7,164 on Sprout Standard.

Both vendors publish their own version of this comparison, both rank for it, and they disagree on basic facts, such as which Sprout plan includes listening. This page runs the headcount math before the feature math and cites each vendor’s own page with the date we read it. It’s written by a company that sells neither tool; we make a competing one, which the disclosure below says plainly. How we compare tools explains the method, and our price matrix of every major scheduler sets both next to the rest of the category.

Hootsuite vs Sprout Social: which is right for your team?

Sprout Social fits teams whose social work is customer care and stakeholder reporting. Hootsuite fits teams that want monitoring and competitor benchmarks without buying add-ons, or an inbox that also takes WhatsApp and SMS. On price, Hootsuite’s first plan with an inbox costs less per seat, while Sprout’s cheapest route to approval workflows costs less than Hootsuite’s. The table sorts it by what you need.

What do Hootsuite and Sprout Social cost for 1, 3 and 5 people?

On annual billing, one seat costs $99 per user/month on Hootsuite Standard and $199 per seat/month on Sprout Standard. Three people cost $3,564 and $7,164 a year; five cost $5,940 and $11,940. Hootsuite does not publish a monthly-billed price, so this comparison is made on the annual basis only.

Both vendors’ comparison pages quote the price of one seat. Here is the team total, tier against tier:

How these totals are worked out: USD list price before tax; no promo, nonprofit or volume discount. Annual total = the vendor's annual per-month figure x 12. Every seat pays the full plan price. Profile cap of 10 treated as account-wide. Profile cap of 5 treated as account-wide.

The monthly line in each Hootsuite cell reads “Not published” on purpose. Hootsuite’s plans FAQ says monthly billing exists at a higher per-user rate but prints no figure, so we don’t invent one. Sprout does publish monthly rates: Standard is $249 per seat/month, billed monthly and Professional $399 per seat/month, billed monthly, so three people pay $747 or $1,197 a month on monthly billing.

Three things stand out in the grid:

  • On Standard and Professional, Hootsuite costs less. On annual billing its Standard seat is about half the price of Sprout’s, and Hootsuite Professional costs the same per seat as Sprout Standard. The two Advanced plans cost the same per seat.
  • The cheapest seat is Sprout’s. Essentials, at $79 per seat/month, billed annually, undercuts both, but its plan card lists no inbox and no brand keywords.
  • The entry plans cap accounts differently. Hootsuite Standard allows 10 social accounts; Sprout Standard allows 5 profiles. Both are unlimited from Professional, so a brand on six networks is pushed up a tier sooner on Sprout.

Both trials are generous. Hootsuite gives 14 days without a card, with a daily posting limit of 10 to 20 posts per organization; Sprout gives 30 days without a card. Neither has a free plan.

For every Hootsuite plan, including Advanced and Enterprise, see our Hootsuite pricing breakdown; for all five Sprout plans and 10-seat totals, see Sprout Social’s per-seat pricing in full. Both are per-seat tools, where headcount drives the bill. If your team grows in channels rather than people, per-seat vs per-account pricing explains the trade-off, and Buffer vs Hootsuite and Metricool vs Hootsuite put Hootsuite against a per-channel and a per-brand tool.

Which has better social listening?

Hootsuite includes more listening in the plan price; Sprout sells deeper listening as a paid add-on. Both include basic monitoring from Standard: Hootsuite’s Standard lists “Monitor your brand and competitors”, and Sprout’s Standard includes keyword and location monitoring with 10 brand keywords per group; for competitors’ ads specifically, Meta’s free Ad Library shows what any Page is running. Past that, Hootsuite keeps advanced listening for Enterprise, and Sprout sells Listening as an add-on. Neither publishes a price for the full product.

The vendors contradict each other here. Hootsuite’s comparison page, last updated 14 May 2026, marks Sprout’s social listening as “Enterprise only” and Hootsuite’s as available on “all plans”. Sprout’s pricing page, read on 30 September 2026, says: “Premium Analytics and Listening are each available as individual add-ons to the Standard plan and up.”

Resolved: for Sprout’s plans, Sprout’s own page is the primary source. Its listening is not Enterprise-only, but it isn’t in any list price either; you add it from Standard and get a quote. Hootsuite’s “all plans” is true of monitoring, not of the full suite: its plans page reserves advanced listening, with 13 months of historical data, for Enterprise.

What each does well:

  • Hootsuite says its listening covers more than 150 million sources and 30+ social channels, with sentiment tracking and AI summaries. Getting brand and competitor monitoring without a separate purchase is a real advantage for smaller budgets.
  • Sprout builds listening for research: query building, sentiment, share of voice against competitors, influencer detection, and Trellis AI for asking questions in plain language.

If listening is a research function for you (brand health, share of voice, campaign reaction), Sprout’s add-on is designed for that job, so get the quote. If you mainly need to see mentions of your brand and competitors, Hootsuite’s base plans give you more.

Which has the better inbox for customer care?

Sprout’s Smart Inbox is the better tool for several agents sharing one social queue. Hootsuite’s inbox is the better choice when customers also message you on WhatsApp or by SMS. Both vendors put the inbox on their Standard plan and add automation and routing on higher tiers, so the choice comes down to how your messages arrive and how many people answer them.

Sprout Social. On Sprout’s Smart Inbox page, “Collision Detection alerts your team in real time when a colleague is already responding”, and earlier conversations with the same person show inline as you reply. The consolidated inbox starts on Standard; Advanced adds sentiment in the Smart Inbox, helpdesk integrations and customer care reports.

Hootsuite. Standard lets you “respond to messages from one inbox”, Professional adds “Automate inbox replies and workflows”, and Advanced adds “Assign and auto-route messages to the right team members”. Hootsuite’s inbox FAQ lists WhatsApp and SMS (via Twilio), rule-based automation and up to 13 months of inbox data. That FAQ maps some features to older plan names, so confirm which tier you need during the trial.

Which has better analytics and reporting?

Hootsuite gives more competitive benchmarking lower down its price list: up to 5 competitors on Standard and 20 on Professional, plus custom reports and 90-day trend forecasting on Professional. Sprout’s reports are the more polished for presenting, with cross-network, paid, competitor and team reports designed to be shared as they are. Which is better depends on whether you benchmark or present.

Tier by tier, from each vendor’s page:

  • Sprout Social: profile and post-level reporting from Essentials; “extensive competitor, tag and paid insights” from Professional; team productivity and customer care reports on Advanced. Premium Analytics is an extra add-on from Standard, with no published price.
  • Hootsuite: benchmarking against 5 competitors on Standard and 20 on Professional, where custom performance reports also start; reports with your own branding and team performance tracking on Advanced; social attribution and ROI reporting on Enterprise.

Pick Hootsuite if you report on how you stack up against a long list of competitors. Pick Sprout if the report goes to a client or a boss and has to look finished. For an agency, reporting is one of the eight usual social media management services worth listing in what your fee covers.

Which plan do you need for approval workflows on each?

Sprout Social: Professional. Hootsuite: Advanced. That makes approvals cheaper on Sprout. On annual billing, a three-person team pays $10,764 a year on Sprout Professional against $14,364 on Hootsuite Advanced.

Hootsuite’s plans page lists “Review and approve content with your team” first on Advanced, at $399 per user/month, billed annually, alongside message routing and team metrics. Sprout’s plan guide places approval workflows on Professional, at $299 per seat/month, billed annually, and its publishing features page describes workflows that “guide internal and external team members through approving messages”. If a client or legal team signs off posts, that external-reviewer support is worth testing in the trial.

One caution: approvals are rarely the only reason to move up a tier. Price the plan you’d need for everything else too, because on per-seat billing the approval tier applies to every seat.

When is neither one worth the money?

When the team is one to three people who mainly plan and publish posts, and don’t need a care inbox, research-grade listening or formal approvals. Per-seat pricing charges those teams for depth they won’t use, and on annual billing even the cheapest inbox plan for three people costs $3,564 a year on Hootsuite.

Of the tools that bill per seat — Sprout Social and Hootsuite — Outfeed is not one of them at Starter or Pro; our per-seat tier starts at Agency. Outfeed AI Pro costs $59 per month, billed monthly, or $49 per month, billed annually ($588 a year), for the whole organisation, with 3 team members, 25 social accounts and unlimited posts. You describe a post in a chat, the AI drafts it in your brand voice, previews it per platform and schedules it.

The honest limits: Outfeed matches neither Sprout’s listening nor Hootsuite’s governance. It has no social listening, publishes to 9 platforms, posts text only to X within monthly caps, and publishes TikTok posts as private for now. Past 3 people it bills per seat too, on Agency at $149 per seat/month, billed monthly or $124 per seat/month, billed annually. The feature-by-feature version is in Outfeed AI vs Sprout Social.

If you want a per-seat tool built around the inbox, Agorapulse bills per user from $79 per user/month, billed annually, and from Professional its inbox also covers ad comments on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok; see Agorapulse pricing. Leaving one of the two? Compare tools that replace Hootsuite or tools that replace Sprout Social.

Starter includes a 3-day free trial with 100 AI credits. Card required. Pro and Agency are billed from the first day. If your team mostly publishes, try Outfeed AI’s chat-first scheduler.
