Pick Buffer if you need breadth, a free plan or a growing team: 12 networks, free for 3 channels, unlimited users on Team. Pick Later if you’re Instagram- or TikTok-first and want a visual grid planner, a Link in Bio that tracks sales, or Snapchat. On price, neither always wins: Buffer bills per account, Later per set plus users.

Buffer publishes its own Buffer vs Later page, and most other comparisons come from rival tools, including us, as the disclosure below says. So this page sticks to what can be checked: both price lists, read on the vendors’ own pages on 30 September 2026, priced on real setups, with the networks that rule each one out. For every other tool, see the 2026 social media tool price matrix and how we compare tools. Weighing Hootsuite as well? Read Buffer vs Hootsuite.

Buffer vs Later: which one should you pick?

Three questions decide most cases: which networks you post to, whether you run two accounts on the same network, and how many people need to log in. Buffer wins on breadth, on a free tier and on a bill that doesn’t grow with headcount. Later wins on Instagram and TikTok presentation: the grid preview, Link in Bio sales tracking and Snapchat. The table maps common situations to a pick.

Disclosure: Outfeed AI makes a competing social media tool. We read every price on the vendor’s own page and recommend the competitor where it fits better.

How does Buffer’s per-channel pricing compare with Later’s social sets?

Buffer charges for every account; Later charges for bundles of accounts, plus people. Buffer Essentials is $6 per channel/month, billed monthly, and the Free plan covers 3 channels. Later Starter is $25 per month, billed monthly, for one set of up to 8 profiles (one per network) and one user. Which works out cheaper depends on how many accounts share a network and how many people log in.

Here are both price lists, month-to-month and yearly:

Buffer: billed per channel USD list prices before tax. Monthly = billed month to month. Billed annually = the per-month equivalent when you pay for a year. Buffer's pricing page shows annual prices by default.

The third person in the last row can’t use Buffer Essentials, which allows 1 user, so Buffer means Team. On Later, Starter sells no extra users or sets, so a second Instagram account or a third user means Growth. Every Later figure also assumes your networks are on Later’s list. If one of the five in row two is X or Bluesky, Later can’t cover it at any price.

The pattern: Later is cheaper for one brand spread across many networks and for a small team sharing one brand. Buffer is cheaper when accounts double up on the same network, and free when you need 3 channels or fewer. For the full plan-by-plan detail, see Buffer’s per-channel pricing explained and Later’s plans and real monthly cost.

Which networks does each tool publish to?

Buffer’s pricing page lists 12 networks and Later’s lists 8. Seven appear on both: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube and Threads. Only Buffer lists X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Substack and Google Business Profile. Only Later lists Snapchat.

Channel count isn’t quality, though: the seven shared networks cover what most small brands post to. The table matters for the minority, such as a newsletter on Substack, a local business on Google Business Profile or a brand with a real Snapchat audience.

Which is better for an Instagram-first creator?

Later, for most Instagram-first accounts. Its Visual Planner previews your grid before posts go out, it schedules Reels, carousels and Stories, and its Link in Bio tracks clicks and sales. Buffer publishes to Instagram too, with an AI Assistant that has no usage limits, but its pricing page doesn’t advertise a grid preview like Later’s. Instagram’s own tools cover part of that: a link sticker adds a link to a Story. Separately, Story highlights keep Stories on your profile after 24 hours.

What Later does better for Instagram:

  • Seeing the grid first. The Visual Planner is a drag-and-drop calendar with a feed preview, bulk scheduling from your media library and unlimited media storage.
  • Selling from the bio. Link in Bio adds up to five links to each Instagram feed post or Reel and one to each TikTok post, with Google Analytics sales tracking, Mavely affiliate links and a Mailchimp form. It’s on every Later plan, Starter included.
  • Deeper history on higher plans. Later keeps 3 months of analytics on Starter, 1 year on Growth and 2 years on Scale, and Scale adds competitive benchmarking.

What Buffer does better, even for Instagram:

  • Posting volume. Buffer’s paid plans schedule unlimited posts per channel. Later Starter caps you at 30 posts per profile a month, so posting to Instagram every day runs one over in a 31-day month.
  • Writing help. Buffer’s AI Assistant generates ideas, repurposes a post for other networks and adjusts tone and length, with no usage limits. Later’s AI runs on monthly credits.
  • A schedule per channel. Each Buffer channel can have its own recurring posting times in its own time zone, useful if your audience sits across regions.

Which gives you more at the free or cheapest tier?

Buffer at the free tier, because Later doesn’t have one. Buffer Free gives 1 user 3 channels, 10 queued posts per channel, the AI Assistant and comment replies, at no cost. At the cheapest paid tier it’s closer. Later Starter brings an 8-profile set and Link in Bio, while Buffer Essentials brings unlimited posts and unlimited AI. The table shows the lowest plan that unlocks each feature.

Before choosing either, ask whether you need a paid tool at all. For Facebook and Instagram only, Meta Business Suite schedules posts, stories and reels for free: see whether Meta Business Suite is really free. For three networks or fewer, planned a week ahead, Buffer’s Free plan may be enough.

Is there a third option if neither fits?

Yes. If neither billing unit suits your setup, a flat plan might. Our lists of Buffer alternatives and Later alternatives rank the wider field. Outfeed AI, which publishes this page, is one of those options, and it prices differently from both: per organisation on Starter and Pro, with accounts and members included, and per seat from Agency.

Outfeed AI Starter is $29 per month billed monthly ($24 billed yearly) for 10 accounts, 100 posts a month and 1 member. Pro is $59 per month ($49 yearly) for 25 accounts, unlimited posts and 3 members. You create posts by chatting with an assistant, across 9 platforms that include X and Bluesky.

On the four setups priced above, Outfeed isn’t the cheapest in any of them. The flat price starts to pay off around 10 accounts: one person running two brands on five networks each pays $60 a month on Buffer Essentials and $50 per month on Later Growth, billed monthly, against Starter’s $29. Buffer covers more networks than our 9, including Mastodon, Substack and Google Business Profile, and Later’s planner is stronger than anything we offer. We don’t post to Snapchat or publish Instagram Stories. TikTok posts publish as private for now. X posts are text-only with a monthly cap, and LinkedIn posts go to a personal profile, not a Company Page. There’s no social listening and no free tier. Starter includes a 3-day free trial with 100 AI credits. Card required. Pro and Agency are billed from the first day.

Buffer vs Later FAQ

Is Buffer or Later better for Instagram?

Later, for most Instagram-first accounts. Its Visual Planner previews your grid before posts go out, it schedules Reels, carousels and Stories, and its Link in Bio tracks clicks and sales. Buffer publishes to Instagram too and includes an AI Assistant with no usage limits, but its pricing page doesn’t advertise a grid preview like Later’s.

Which is cheaper, Buffer or Later?

It depends on your mix of accounts and people. Buffer bills per channel: Essentials is $6 per channel/month, billed monthly. Later bills per plan: Starter is $25 per month, billed monthly, for one social set (one profile on each of 8 networks) and one user. One brand on 5 networks costs $30 a month on Buffer Essentials and $25 on Later Starter, billed monthly, but two Instagram accounts push Later to Growth at $50.

Does Later have a free plan like Buffer?

No. Buffer’s Free plan covers 3 channels and 1 user at no cost, with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time. Later lists no free plan. It offers a 14-day trial of any paid plan, which needs a card and turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel.

What platforms do Buffer and Later support?

Buffer’s pricing page lists 12: Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Substack and Google Business Profile. Later’s lists 8: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads and Snapchat. Only Buffer lists X and Bluesky, and only Later lists Snapchat.

Can teams collaborate in Buffer and Later?

Yes, on the right plan. Buffer’s Team plan includes unlimited team members and approval workflows, while Essentials is for one user. Later includes 1 user on Starter, 2 on Growth and 4 on Scale, with approvals from Growth. Extra Later users cost $5 a month each billed monthly, or $3.75 billed yearly, on Growth and Scale.
